Abstract

This integrated project has gone beyond imaginable and was aim at evaluating the problems that faces Nekede community. The project, Design and construction of hotel building in Nekede community was brought out as a result of lack of standard hotel for Nekede community.

In Nekede community, most at times visitors coming in and other people find it difficult in locating where to lodge or have realization and catch some firms within the vicinity.

This project will go along way in solving most of this problem by finding out the appropriate site suited for the construction of a well standard hotel for Nekede community and the site will also be easy to access for both visitors and community people who will love to lodge or have their funs.

The study will also determine the topography, weather conditions and soil characteristics nature of the selected site. The specification, construction process and work programme down to handling over to the project.

Chapter One

Feasibility And Viability Study

The feasibility and viability study of design and construction of hotel was carried out to ascertain the buildability of the construction of hotel for Nekede community. The Research of this study was done within the Nekede community, the proposed site is at umunofocha Nekede, situated at a strategic point for easy access opposite maternity bus-stop, along south Africa Road. The area of proposed site is about 39900mmx33900mm which will be okay for the propose project.

The geographical and climatic weather of the proposed site is such a quiet place for any construction such like hotel and other building because the area is still developing and the existing building around the proposed site are quite far from the propose site.

The topography of the proposed site at Umuofocha South Africa has some features of trees and shrubs and the site is a virgin land, a standard Laboratory test was carried out on the same virgin site, the aim of this test is to established the water content of the soil and also to ascertain the soil characteristic and at such its bearing capacity, the result obtain on this test enables us to design and construct a standard hotel for the Nekede community.

The method used in our soil sample collection is Hand Auger hole suitable for any depth of soil sample collection. The research conducted also shows that, the site is free from underground operation service (such as pipeline, underground electricity wiring and cable services) and it is also accessible to facilities like transportation, electricity and water.

The Research study of River side hotel located at Umuerim extension along Futo Nekede road is a good constructed hotel within Nekede community but the feasibility study shows that the site where the hotel was build is not good because the area is too small and a lot of building surrounding it causing discomfort to some occupant of the near by building.

Finally, the feasibility and viability study of the proposes site located at Umuofocha Nekede South Africa opposite Maternity bus-stop shows that the site is at a strategic place easier access.

Chapter Two

Site Analysis

The physical factor of a site often have a direct bearing upon the method and sequence adopted on site in view of this to study the physical features of the site is therefore neccessary. This is referred to as site analysis. In site analysis, the site location, access road, topography of the-site, weather condition, orientation of the building etc are to be analyzed. This is to increase the productivity and reduction in double handling of materials as well as reduction in labour and plant cost.

Site Location

The site is strategically situated along Nekede, Ihiagwa road close to Maternity Junction/ Bus-stop. The site is unconfined area but nearer to other existing structures utilities/amenities.

Access

The site has a direct access route from the main road leading to Nekede/Ihiagwa road from Naze junction and its easy to locate and accessed through the same main road for easy transportation and movement of materials.

Site Topography

The site is a level ground surface that is free from ditches and undulation, stumping, debris, soil heaps low grasses/ trees.

Weather Conditions

The site which is at Nekede community in Owerri Imo state, falls on the tropical rain forest that is characterized with rain falling between April and November Months of the year. The weather condition will have a negligible effect on the finishes of the building during raining and drying seasons of the year.

Orientation Of The Building

The building would be Orient across east-west direction to avoid over concentration of the sun rays on one side of the building either in the morning or evening (afternoon). By so doing, there will be a balanced distribution of sun rays and natural lighting in all the hotel rooms of the building. The access route would also be orient for easy entrance.

Plants Locations / Workshops / Services

Plants would be properly and strategically situated on the site and precise positioning of mechanical machines to check that obstructions are cleared. The type of scaffold used in this project is tabular scaffolding.

Workshops for joiners, carpenters, filters etc are located balancing easy access and short routes to the scene of construction with necessity to avoid congestion of the site. The existing services are properly pinpointed to avoid disruption when setting the building. The installation of temporary electricity and water should have been put in place by consulting relevant authorities to ensure smooth and fast construction process.

Security

In view of the inherent vulnerability and temporary nature of the building site, the site would be protected against that, canalization and risks against cost avoided. Adequate perimeter fence or hoarding would be put in place to restrict public views.

Huts And Offices

During construction both men and materials are to be provided with shelter to protect them from the bad effects of the weather. Huts would be built for the storage of materials such as cement, timber etc. this step is taking to conserve and protect more vulnerable and most expensive materials on the site. Site offices should be erected temporary for day to day running of the project and where to perform the secretarial aspect of the project.

Utilities

The building site would be provided with utilities such as electricity, pipe-borne water, telephone and transportation means for convenient construction work.

Soil Investigation

The stability and local bearing capability of any structure depends greatly on the type of soil such structure is built upon. This means it’s more important to determine the bearing characteristics of the soil of the chosen site.
The result from soil tests help in choosing the right and suitable foundation for the building. So, strip foundation has been choosing for this project because of the bearing capacity of the soil and cost implications.
