Project and Seminar Material For Electrical Electronics Engineering EEE

Abstract

Knowing the level of water in a tank or reservoir is very vital. Some homes, industries and companies have been facing difficulties due to failure in water supply. People generally leave their pump ON when their taps go dry and switch OFF the pump when their overhead tank starts overflowing.

This results in the unnecessary waste of water.
In this era of technology burst, computer controlled water level indicator which can detect the level of water in a tank and show related information on a display device is used to solve the above mentioned problems.

This project “Computer Controlled Water Level Indicator” is aimed at eliminating the stress of climbing a water tank just to determine its water level. It also indicates the level of water in the tank at all times via the display device.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

There are two traditional methods for finding the level of water in a tank:

  1. Tapping down the side of the tank until the sound suddenly changes.
  2. Removing the tank cover and dipping in a measuring stick.

The first method is notoriously unreliable, while the second method can be awkward and time-consuming.

1.1 Objectives Of The Project

The main objective of this project is to have a device which displays information based on the level of water in a water tank or reservoir. It also ensure a stress free situation in the sense that the user can always be relaxed and just look at a display to know the level of water in the tank.

Other output device can be attached to the circuit so that it can turn ON a water pump when the tank is empty and turn it OFF when the tank is filled. With this apparatus on ground, one can be sure of regular water supply from the water tank.

1.2 Importance Of Computer Controlled Water Level Indicator

The project, computer controlled water level indicator is of vast importance with some of them listed below;

  1. It eliminates the stress of climbing a water tank just to determine its water level
  2. It ensures a constant water supply
  3. It can also be so constructed so that one dose not have to always go and turn on or off a water pump
  4. It also indicates the level of water in the tank at all times via the display device

1.3 Principle Of Operation Of Computer Controlled Water Level Indicator

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF COMPUTER CONTROLLED WATER LEVEL INDICATOR

The above diagram represents the block diagram of computer controlled water level indicator. It consists of EIGHT stages namely:

  1. Water tank
  2. Parallel port interface
  3. CPU (Central processing unit)
  4. Random Access memory (RAM)
  5. Output port
  6. Transistor Amplifier
  7. Electro-Mechanical switch (Relay)
  8. Water pump
  9. Seven segment display
1.3.0 Water Tank

The water tank contains water; eight electrodes are dipped into it at different levels. Electrode Lo represent when the tank is empty, L1 represents level 1 while D2 represents level 2 and D8 represents level 8 signifying the tank is full.

1.3.1 Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The central processing unit (CPU) processes the signal from the parallel port according to the written virtual basic program stored in the random access memory. The information from the CPU tells what level of water is in the tank and also displays it in the seven segment display.

1.3.2 Random Access Memory (RAM)

The signal from the central processing unit is sent to the Random Access memory (RAM) where it is being stored.

1.3.3 Output Port

Output port is the port by which the signal is sent out from the computer to the transistor amplifiers.

1.3.4 Transistor Amplifiers

Transistor amplifiers amplify the signal from the microcontroller and send information to seven segment display. Some of the information is sent to the relay and then to the water pump.

1.3.5 Electro- Mechanical Switch (Relay)

The electro-mechanical switch (Relay) receives information when the water level is at any of the position that the slider is positioned. However, if for example the slider is at level three, the relay will be turned OFF automatically i.e the water pump is at OFF state. When the water goes below level three, the water pump is turned ON automatically.

1.3.6 Water Pump

The water pump is used to pump water to the water tank. When the signal received from the relay indicates water level at level 3 (ie L3) or below it, the water pump continues pumping provided there is power supply.

1.3.7 Seven Segment Display

The Seven segments is a display device that gives us the actual output or result in figures. The signal from the transistor amplifiers is sent to the seven segment display to display the result according to the level of water in the tank.

Chapter Five

5.0 Conclusion And Recommendation

5.1 Conclusion

This project has provided us with a device which displays information based on the level of water in a given reservoir or tank. The concept of water level indicator with a display unit is an automatic technology for determining the level of water at every point in time. It thoroughly eradicates the traditional method of climbing a water tank to determine its level. It also ensures a stress free situation since the user can always be relaxed and visualize the level of water in the tank. Constant water supply is assured provided the level of water in the tank is indicated at all time through the display unit and water can be pumped immediately the display indicates EMPTY which shows shortage of water.

5.2 Recommendation

It is expected that every public organization will embrace the water level indicator technology advancement as we look forward to the dynamic world of technology. It is also important to recommend this technology for most firms that are always in need of water like; hospital, food processing unit, banks, schools etc. for the singular fact that water is essential to every living being (human), it is very necessary to implement this technology in general.
