Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in Bwari area council: implications for counseling. Specifically, the study determine the level of drug abuse among senior secondary school students and examine the commonly abused drugs by students in secondary schools. The study further, ascertain the causes of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools. More so, the study determine the effect of drug abuse on students academic performance among senior secondary schools in Bwari area council. Lastly, the study establish measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools in Bwari area council. This study was carried out using the primary and secondary source of data which includes, Internet, journals, published and unpublished articles. The hypothesis was tested using chi- square statistical tool which tested have if there is any negative significant effect on academic performance of senior secondary school student and also tested the level of drug abuse among secondary student to see if its low. The findings revealed that drug abuse does have a negative significant effect on academic performance of senior secondary school student. Furthermore, that the level of drug abuse among secondary student is high. More so family history of addiction is one of the causes of drug abuse. Lastly Seek help for mental illness is one measure to curb drug abuse. The study hereby recommend that government should prevent the cultivation/sales of Indian Helm and other deadly herbs that encourage drug abuse. Also , government should strictly enforce its existing laws against drug abuse through its regulatory agencies. Lastly, parents and guardians should Endeavour to monitor their children and wards so that they do not engage in drug abuse.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Drug abuse is defined as the use of drugs for purposes other than medical treatment, resulting in negative consequences for the user. Socially, cognitively, or physically in a bad way Kerochio, (2015). An individual’s increased inclination to participate in confrontations with friends, instructors, and school activities may represent the social influence. While Kalunta (2015) defines a drug as any thing other than food or water that affects the way individuals feel, think, see, and act, cognitive consequences refer to the individual’s lack of concentrate on academic tasks and memory loss. It is a drug that affects physical, mental, and emotional functioning owing to its chemical makeup. Chewing, eating, smoking, drinking, rubbing on the skin, or injection are all ways for it to enter the body. Drug addiction is defined by the World Health Organization (W.D.E, 2017) as “permanent, excessive drug use that is inconsistent with or connected to approved medicinal practices.”

Drug misuse among the world’s young has become a severe issue that affects everyone. Addiction sends many individuals, particularly young people, on a downward spiral of despair that may be lethal in certain situations. They vary from drug-sniffing street kids and adolescent ecstasy users to hardened heroin and cocaine users (NACADA, 2015). Wages are lost as a result of drug usage. Property devastation in schools, rising health-care expenditures, and shattered families As parents, children, teachers, government officials, taxpayers, and employees, we are all affected by this issue. Nigeria’s national government has launched an intensive push to combat drug and substance misuse. As a result, the (NDLEA) was founded to enforce, manage, and remedy misuse by stakeholders, as well as advising communities on the vice. At the grassroots level, chiefs and their aides drove the campaign, which addressed parents and students. Drug misuse was becoming a tragedy in both rural and urban settings in 2017, according to Kithi, location head Muss Kipchumba, as barons targeted school pupils. Drug addiction has taken a toll on the young; elderly people were also succumbing to substance misuse via excessive alcohol consumption. Raising public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse has become one of Nigeria’s top concerns.

The worldwide epidemic of drug use, abuse, and other substance misuse seems to be threatening educational institutions all over the globe. They seem to be overburdened by the monster of drug and substance misuse, despite the fact that their goal is to impart information, ideas, values, and standards (Mclean and Ellrod, 2018). Cocaine, Indian hemp (marijuana), Kuber, cigarettes, codeine, and petrol sniffing are all regularly misused narcotics that are hurting school systems and students’ academic performance, particularly in senior secondary schools across the globe. Drug misuse has been noted as a severe barrier to efficient teaching, school administration, and learning processes in the Nigerian educational system, according to Ajayi and Ekundayo (2018).

Because of financial issues and cultural norms prevalent in this age range, drug misuse most often starts in early adolescence (Kandel & Chen, 2015). Tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs are used in that order. Secondary school students are increasingly using prescribed drugs, particularly narcotics, which are used to treat severe pain, and stimulant medications, which are used to treat conditions such as attention deficit disorder and narcolepsy (Turner, 2018).

As a result, youths who are expected to be tomorrow’s leaders have turned to drug use. This behavior has an effect on the pupils’ growth, and the predicted output of these students’ academic results may suffer as a result of their drug addiction persistence (Turner, 2018). Drug misuse is a big issue in schools, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). For example, around 20% of students in Abuja, Nigeria, had used a psychoactive substance at least once in their life (Alemika, 2018).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, drug misuse is a widespread occurrence among secondary school pupils. Parents, peer groups, and society as a whole have all been blamed for the growing rise of drug use. Acts of vandalism, weapon carrying, alcohol abuse, rape, examination malpractices, school violence, strikes, bullying, cultism, truancy, and school drop-outs, as well as other anti-social conduct, are all common in secondary schools. Juvenile delinquency and disobedience to teachers and school administrators are both forgivable offenses. Furthermore, depending on the style of usage, drug consumption might be useful or dangerous.

Drug misuse has a number of effects on secondary school student academic performance, including heart and liver problems, among other things. As a result, the crime rate, which is linked to drug misuse, has risen to alarmingly high levels. As a result, a study of the the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in the Bwari Area Council is required.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in Bwari area council: implications for counseling. The objectives are as follows

1. Determine the level of drug abuse among senior secondary school students and examine the commonly abused drugs by students in secondary schools.
2. Ascertain the causes of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools
3. Determine the effect of drug abuse on students academic performance among senior secondary schools in Bwari area council
4. Establish measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools in Bwari area council.

1.4 Research Questions

The following questions have been prepared for this study

1. To what level is drug abuse among senior secondary school students?
2. What are the causes of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools ?
3. What are the effect of drug abuse on students academic performance among senior secondary school students?
4. What are the measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among students in senior secondary school?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

• H01: drug abuse does not have effect on academic performance of senior secondary school student.
• H02: there are no measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among senior secondary school student

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study focuses on influence of drug abuse on students academic performance among senior secondary schools in Bwari area council: implications for counseling.

This study is significant to the ministry of education as it will make them see the causes of drug abuse and also help them devise strategy to curb the menace of drug abuse. This study is of benefit to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature and also help as a guide to students who may want to write more about the topic.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study examines the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in Bwari area council: implications for counseling. The study also determine the level of drug abuse among senior secondary school students and examine the commonly abused drugs by students in secondary schools. The study further ascertain the causes of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools. More so the study determine the effect of drug abuse on students academic performance among senior secondary schools in Bwari area council. Lastly the study establish measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools in Bwari area council. Hence this study will be delimited to senior secondary schools in Bwari Abuja.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

This study was constrained by a number of factors which are as follows:

1. Just like any other research, ranging from unavailability of needed accurate materials on the topic under study, inability to get data
2. Financial constraint , was faced by the researcher ,in getting relevant materials and in printing and collation of questionnaires
3. Time factor: time factor pose another constraint since having to shuttle between writing of the research and also engaging in other academic work making it uneasy for the researcher

1.9 Definition of Operational Terms

Drug Abuse:

A condition whereby drugs are taken for other motives other than the intended ones.

Academic Performance:

The extent to which a student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goal.

1.10 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows.

• Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
• Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
• Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
• Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
• Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study.

5.1 Summary

In this study, our focus was to examine the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in Bwari area council using selected senior secondary schools in Bwari as a case study. The study specifically was aimed at highlighting the level of drug abuse among senior secondary school students and examine the commonly abused drugs by students in secondary schools. The study also ascertain the causes of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools. The study furtherdetermine the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school student in Bwari area council. More so the study establish measures put in place to curb the menace of drug abuse among students in senior secondary schools in Bwari area council..A total of 77 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are drawn from teachers from the selected senior secondary school.

5.2 Conclusion

Based on the finding of this study, the following conclusions were made:

1. Drug abuse does not have a negative significant effect on academic performance of senior secondary school student.
2. The level of drug abuse among secondary student is high.
3. Family history of addiction is one of the causes of drug abuse
4. Mental health disorder is another cause of drug abuse
5. Lack of family investment causes drug abuse among students
6. Taking a highly addictive drug is another form of drug abuse.
7. Peer pressure is another major factor that causes drug abuse.
8. Seek help for mental illness is one measure to curb drug abuse.
9. Keep a well balanced life is another measure one can take to curb drug abuse.
10. Examining the risk factor is another way to curb drug abuse.
11. Avoid temptation and peer pressure helps curb drug abuse.
12. Understands how substance abuse develop

5.3 Recommendation

1. Government should prevent the cultivation/sales of Indian Helm and other deadly herbs that encourage drug abuse.
2. Government should strictly enforce its existing laws against drug abuse through its regulatory agencies.
3. Parents and guardians should Endeavour to monitor their children and wards so that they do not engage in drug abuse.
4. School security should be heightened and regular check should be carried out.
5. Counseling education should be introduced in campuses to revive those who have already been engaging in the act.
