Knowledge And Perception Of Drug Use And Abuse Among Secondary School Students
The purpose of this research was to find out the knowledge and perception of drug use and abuse among students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The research was also aimed at ascertaining whether drug abuse has a role to play in the academic performance of students. In carrying out this study, there was a review of related literature, questionnaire was administered to respondents (students) in their various schools to collect relevant data. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed and interpreted. T
he findings revealed that students abuse drug for fun, pleasure and excitement and they are unaware of any health hazard. It was also gathered that parents’ lack of early moral instruction and training and the school environment, i.e. teacher’s nonchalant attitudes to duties have lured some students into drug abuse.
Emphasis was laid on the need for effective guidance and counseling to be given to students to make them better and useful citizens of our country. It was also gathered that provision of educational facilities, conducive environment for effective learning and other recommendations will help to improve a high school achievement in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government and the country at large.
1.1 Background of the Study
The use of drugs dates back into the pre-history of man. Such drugs were used to relieve pain or cure and control diseases (Curew and Dibal, 1999). Drugs as defined by the World Health Organization (1967) is any substance which taken by living organisms may modify the functions of living organism. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC, 1999), stated that situations of ill-health provide the compelling need for drugs that is in order to modify the functions of the body and restore it to life. However, the major issue with drugs is not in its use for curative purposes but in the abuse and misuse of these drugs especially when these drugs are psychoactive drugs.
The consumption level of hard drugs has risen sharply in Nigeria within the last two decades. Such drugs like heroine, cocaine, cannabis and even alcohol have in recent times become so easily accessible by individuals of much cancer is the high prevalence of the use of these drugs among adolescents. Adolescents use drugs for several reasons among which are, for experimentation, mere fun and excitement, peer pressure, to get over depression and other psychological problems, etc.
However, the use of these drugs among young people has so much effect on individuals, families and the society at large. The problems range from social, psychological, economical and even political problems. This paper therefore seeks to find out the reasons for drug use among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and the perception of the effects of these drugs on the health and academic performance of students.
1.2 Statement of Problems
The use of hard drugs including alcohol and cigarette is a major source of health and psychological problems among adults and young people in both developed and developing countries, including Nigeria. It is generally believed that most people who use these substances often begin at an early age and may continue throughout life.
Adolescent stage is usually viewed as a period of experimentation where young people seek to go beyond the protective shelter of adults thus involving in activities that are often detrimental to their health and well-being, such as the use of drugs. Despite hazards and other implications of drug use and use of these substances among young people, this study therefore seeks to find out the factors that contribute to this and proffer solution to address these issues.
1.3 Objective of the Study
- The purpose of this study is to examine in detail the use and abuse of drugs among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
- The study also seeks to identify the most commonly abused substances and the factors that contribute to the use of these substances.
- To find out the knowledge and perception of the health risk and other implications of drug use among students.
1.4 Research Hypotheses
- Ho: Students of Oredo Local government do not engage in drug abuse
- Hi: Students of Oredo Local government do engage in drug abuse
- Ho: Students do not have a good knowledge of drug use and abuse in Oredo Local Government.
- Hi: Students have a good knowledge of drug use and abuse in Oredo Local Government.
1.5 Significance of the Study
It is expected that this study will make the following contributions to the advancement of drug use and abuse especially among young people.
It will provide necessary information and create awareness on the extent of drug use among students. This will help parents, teachers and indeed all stakeholders to plan intervention programmes that will help solve the problem of drug use in the society. It is also expected to educate students on the implications of drug use and thus prompt them to make informed decisions on drug use.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study is primary concerned with knowledge and perception of drug use and abuse among secondary school students. This study/project work covers secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The researcher encountered some constraints, which limited the scope of the study. These constraints include but are not limited to the following
a) Availability of Research Material:
The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Refers to a substance rather than food that is purposely introduced into the body to change normal body function.
Persistent excessive use of chemical or substance for any reason other than its acceptable medical purpose
Any drug that the government considers harmful to the mental and physical health of the society the use of such a drug is forbidden by law, these include bhang, heroin, cocaine etc.
Refers to any drugs that is potentially dangerous but is not against the law to consume and distribute them.
This is the demand to confirm to the values and standards of the peer (classmates, age mates).
1.8 Organization of the Study
This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows
- Chapter one is concerned with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
- Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
- Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
- Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
- Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation
It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain a critical analysis of knowledge and perception of drug use and abuse among secondary school students.
In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations are made, which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefit in addressing the challenges of drug abuse.
This study aimed at having a critical analysis of knowledge and perception of drug use and abuse among secondary school students. Three objectives were raised. These objectives include; The purpose of this study is to examine in detail the use and abuse of drugs among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, the study also seeks to identify the most commonly abused substances and the factors that contribute to the use of these substances, to find out the knowledge and perception of the health risk and other implications of drug use among students.
Based on the above findings pertaining to the objectives of the study the following conclusions are drawn.
Students of Oredo local government area of Edo statedo not have much knowledge of the concept of drug use and abuse. Most acquired knowledge on the subject by students were from wrong sources, hence incorrect or incomplete.
The government agencies, especially National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other concerned organizations should intervene and engage in sensitization programmes and establish links with schools.
Teaching what constitute drug abuse and the effects of such behaviour on the individual and family should be part of the school home economic curriculum right from primary to tertiary institutions. The essence is to dispel ignorance on the part of the youths who are parents of tomorrow and encourage them to imbibe positive attitude and keep good company both at school and at home.
Parents and school teachers should make deliberate effort to instill high moral standard in their children/students and ensure they monitor or advise them on the kind of friends they should or shouldn’t hang out with in the community, as doing so will help reduce drug abuse behaviour among secondary school students.
