Effectiveness Of The Television As An Element Of Mass Media In The Teaching Of English Language

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The Mass media is regarded as a diverse array of media technologies which is used to reach a large audience through mass communication. Mass media transmit information electronically through films, radio, recorded music, or television. Digital media consist of both Internet and mobile mass communication. Internet media consist of email, social media sites, websites, and Internet-based radio and television. The use of Media is applicable in any discipline to facilitate learning in the class, and also for out-of-class assignments. Examples include the use of Short film, television clips, written articles, and blog postings which views can watch to reinforce concepts and generate discussion. Songs and music videos, especially when the lyrics are made available, can be used to the same effect.

The use of television reaffirms the findings from some Research work which states that people learn abstract, new, and novel concepts more easily when they are presented in both verbal and visual form (Salomon, 1979). According to (Cowen, 1984) visual media make concepts more accessible to a person than text media and helps bring back memory. Willingham’s (2009) investigated why students remember everything that’s on television and forget the lecture they receive. He discovered that visual media helps students retain concepts and ideas. Television constitute a vital mass media communication channel which transmits images of stationary or moving objects between distant points. The study seeks to appraise the effectiveness of the television as an element of mass media in the teaching of English language.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

A fundamental challenge confronting the use of mass media is the copyright issues that accompany using this medium in teaching. Also it requires additional work such as preparing the DVD before class, digitizing media for playback on a computer and making sure that the audio-visual equipment is functioning properly beforehand. Some Media scenes such as humor, drama, terror, and language may distract some students from the theories and concepts the scenes portray. Some students may become offended by media with objectionable content. Utilizing media takes time and may not really achieve the intended objectives of the lecture. The problem confronting the study is to appraise the effectiveness of the television as an element of mass media in the teaching of English language.
