Abstract


Telemedicine is portrayed as the usage of electronic communication and information technologies to help huge separation clinical health care, patient and professional health related education, general health and health organization. A survey research design was adopted, a simple random sampling technique was used to select 100 respondents from the population and a questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The study was conducted in a tertiary medical center (TREMENDOC) located in the Federal Government of Nigeria. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 6.0. The results show that the effectiveness of TeleMedicine and Online Medical Consultation on Health Care Delivery in Nigeria include but not limited to Rapid and efficient communication; Alleviate imbalances in geographical allocation of resources; Decreases patient anxiety; Increases access to health facilities; Elimination of real – time interaction. There is need for basic training and familiarity with the computer and associated communication systems. The surveyed Federal Medical Centers should embark on drastic development of TeleMedical in line with global trend in order to promote effective utilization of Telemedical Services.

It encompasses several different forms of information transmission (voice, sound, video, still picture, text), communication technologies (standard telephone lines, coaxial cable, satellite, microwave, digital wireless, ISDN, Internet), and user interfaces (desktop computers, laptop computers, personal digital assistants, Fax machines, telephones, mobile phones, videophones, various stand alone systems and peripheries).   2. There is a significant influence of telemedicine on the Nigerian health care system

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study investigates the impact of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria and therefore will no doubt open the Nigerian health care sector to the impact of information and communication technology on the society and particularly to the health sector as it will help them to effectively and efficiently carryout their job in a without stress.

It will also help the government to look at the brighter side of ICT which has considerably helped the health practitioners to carry out their job without any delay. This study will also help the researchers by serving as a foundation for further study in this area.


1.7 Scope of the Study

This study on the impact of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria will be carried out at Tremendoc and therefore 100 workers of Tremendoc will be used as samples for this study.


1.8 Limitation of the Study

The only major challenged encountered by the researcher was the attitude of the respondents. The researcher encountered the major challenge from the respondents on their typical reluctant attitude to fill the questionnaire or grant interview. In some cases, some respondents expect to be paid for the use of their time and knowledge; if otherwise, they were very reluctant in giving the required information. Some hoard information in keeping with the oath of secrecy. In spite of repeated assurance of confidentiality most of them fear the loss of their job and some were too busy to grant interview and fill the questionnaires correctly.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

5.1 Summary

This study focused on the impact of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria (a case study of TREMENDOC). The study was set to address three objectives which include;

  1. To assess the effectiveness of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria.
  2. To determine the various types of telemedicine available in Nigeria.
  3. To examine the challenges associated with the use of Telemedicine in Tremendoc.

Based on the above stated objectives and the study carried out, the following findings were made:

  1. That the effectiveness of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria include but not limited to Rapid and efficient communication; Alleviate imbalances in geographical allocation of resources; Decreases patient anxiety; Increases access to health facilities; and Elimination of real – time interaction.
  2. That the various types of telemedicine available in Nigeria include but not limited to Telecardialogy; Teledermatology; Teleradiology; Telepharmacy; and Telenursing.
  3. That the challenges associated with the use of Telemedicine in Tremendocinclude but not limited to Poor internet facilities; Poor funding; Unfavorable government policy; Difficulty in retrieving record; and Difficult remote access.

5.2 Conclusion

The main purpose of this study was to assess the impact of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria (a case study of TREMENDOC).All the workers of TREMENDOC)were selected for the study. Three research questions guided the study with one research hypothesis.

In this study, a survey research design was adopted, the population comprises all the staff of TREMENDOC), a simple random sampling technique was used to select 100 respondents from the population and a questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Relevant literatures were reviewed which guided the objectives and methodology of this study. As result of the field study and analysis of results, the following findings were made:

  1. That the effectiveness of telemedicine and online medical consultation on health care delivery in Nigeria include but not limited to Rapid and efficient communication; Alleviate imbalances in geographical allocation of resources; Decreases patient anxiety; Increases access to health facilities; and Elimination of real – time interaction.
  2. That the various types of telemedicine available in Nigeria include but not limited to Telecardialogy; Teledermatology; Teleradiology; Telepharmacy; and Telenursing.
  3. That the challenges associated with the use of Telemedicine in Tremendoc include but not limited to Poor internet facilities; Poor funding; Unfavorable government policy; Difficulty in retrieving record; and Difficult remote access.

5.3 Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  1. There is need for basic training and familiarity with the computer and associated communication systems in order to facilitate the use of telemedicine and telehealth applications and systems.
  2. Health communication professionals should devise methods of approaching medical schools to encourage them to integrate courses into their programs that instruct the students on the most commonly used forms of telemedicine and the forms likely to be used in the future.
  3. Establishing a basic understanding of what this medical technology can lead to will help health communication scholars enlighten the telemedicine debate by turning unique insights into more adequate approaches that will enrich and humanize mediated channels of health communication, thereby offering remedies and clarifications for effective health care exchange and delivery.
  4. The surveyed Federal Medical Centers should embark on drastic development of telemedicine in line with global trend in order to promote effective utilization of telemedicine services.
