Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the historical background of Zumratul Jamiu Mumin and to examine the position of the organization with respect to the adoption of Hadith as a secondary source of Islamic Law. The main objective of this organization is to engage various religious leaders, Muslims inclusive, in hot debate regarding religious issues. In line with the fact that Muslims are to call the people to the fold of Islam, build a balanced and Da’wah activities. The aim is to probe into historical background. The historical antecedents show that a time was in some parts of this country-Nigeria-when Islam comprehensively governed the lives of the people. This means that the Malians were the pioneers of Islam in the region, Yorubaland.

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Islam is the religion of peace and brotherhood. It is a belief in universal religion, was conveyed extensively to the nooks and crannies of the world through Da’wah activities. Islam has, from the outset, been identified with the act of proselytization. This religion cannot, therefore, be divorced from Muslim community to follow the way of the Prophets by commanding what is good and prohibiting what is bad: Let there arise from amongst you a group of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining al-ma„rūf (all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding al-munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam forbids) and it is they who are successful) Q3:104 Based on the above verse, it is crystal clear that Muslims are to engage in Da‘wah activities. Not this alone, but to as well act as model of moderation, eradicate evils, establish justice and deliver supernumerary goodness to the Qur’ān extols the Muslims over other creations when it says: You are the best nation raised up for human kind. You enjoin righteousness and forbid corruption and you believe in Allah… Q3:110 Da‘wah, as an instrument of propagation of the religion, aims basically at enjoining what is right and forbidden what is wrong[ Raheem. A. 2003. Islamic History. Delhi: Royal Pu]. In line with the fact that Muslims are to call the people to the fold of Islam, build a balanced and Zumratul Jamiu Mumin poses a great interest to be studied for its Da’wah activities.

1.2 Objectives of the Study

This study aims at achieving the following objectives:

To probe into historical background of Zumratul Jamiu Mumin.
To examine its Da‘wah Methodology.
To evaluate its doctrinal beliefs.
To examine the position of Zumratul Jamiu Mumin with respect to the adoption of Hadith as a secondary source of Islamic Law.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Unlike other Muslim organization with main objective of winning new souls and reawakening spiritual consciousness of Muslim ones, the primary objective of Zumratul Jamiu Mumin is to engage various religious leaders, Muslims inclusive, in hot debate regarding religious issues. The society regards only the Quran and Bible as sacred Books of Allah in determining religious issues. The use of Hadith, to them, is seen as an aberration. This idiosyncratic religious attitude held by Ogun State-based religious body is considered worthy to be investigated.

1.4 Limitation of the Study

There is no study undertaken by a researcher that is perfect. The imperfection of any research is always due to some factors negatively affecting a researcher in the course of carrying out research. Therefore, time constraint has shown no mercy to the researcher. The limited time has to be shared among many alternative uses, which includes reading, attending lectures and writing of this research, also distance and its attendant costs of travelling to obtain information which may enhance the writing of this study was a major limitation.

Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Conclusion

Conclusively, it is understood that Da’wah is mainly concerned with calling people to the way of Allah (the almighty) and following His commandment and that of His Prophet (peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon him) Da’wah is very important in disseminating Allah’s religion. It is old and a continued process, it traced its origin from the previous prophet before Prophet Muhammad (peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon him) Allah the Almighty sent different Messengers at different times from generation to generation in order to deliver the message and teaching of Islam.
Allah, the Most High stated in the Glorious Qur’an:

وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُ ل أُمَّةٍ رَسُولًَّ أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ هَدَى اللَّهُ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ حَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الضَّلََ لَة فَسِيرُوا فِي الَْْرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِ بِينَ
And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming); worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (keep away from) Taghut (i.e. all false deities). Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some on whom the straying was justified. So travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth)[ Qur’an, 16:36]

Many Qur’anic verses and traditions of the prophet Muhammad (peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon him) talk about the work of Da’wah and Allah the most High declared it (Da’wah) as the most profitable transaction. He promised both; physical and spiritual reward to those who carry out the work of Da’wah in this cause
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى تِجَارَةٍ تُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ عَذَا أَلِيمٍ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُو لهِ وَتُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِأمَْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ يَغْفِرْ لَكُ مْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَيُدْخِلْكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الَْْنْهَارُ وَمَسَاكِنَ طَ ي بَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ وَأُخْرَى تُحِبُّونَهَا نَصْرٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَتْحٌ قَرِيبٌ وَبَ شرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
O you who believe! Shall I guide to a trade that will save you from painful? That you believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad S A W), and that you strive hard and fight in the cause of Allah with your wealth and lives: that will be better for you, if you know! (if you do so) He will forgive you your sins and admits you in to the Gardens under which river flow and pleasant dwellings in (Eden) Paradise; that is indeed a great success. And also (He will give you) another (Blessing) which you love help from Allah against your enemies and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) to the believers[ Qur’an 61: 10-13].

5.2 Recommendations

They should also call the people to believe in the oneness uniqueness of Allah, Observing worship to him alone, follow the footstep of His Prophet (peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be Upon him) they should also try to emulate the act of Da’wah practiced by the generation that proceed our own generation they should not call in order to serve the interest of any man, sects, or organization. By doing so, they are acting against the real teaching of Islam.
Propagators should bear in mind that calling people to the way of Allah is a spiritual obligation with which they may lead them (People) to Allah’s salvation on the day of resurrection. When there is no man be he a rich or poor, ruler, political or traditional one, money and family, power and influence sheikh of any sect, neither chairman nor secretary of any organization has the right to assist him.
