The Role Of The Church In Societal Development (A Case Study Of Nigerian Society)
Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the role of the Church in societal development: a case study of Nigerian society. The study was carried out to determine the extent of church involvement in societal development in Nigeria; evaluate the positive contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria; determine the effectiveness of church-led development programs in addressing poverty and underdevelopment in Nigeria; and evaluate the negative contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of Members of The Transforming Church, Gwarinpa, Abuja. In determining the sample size, the researcher purposefully selected 147 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses was tested Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that while the church in Nigeria has made significant contributions to societal development, particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, job creation, and disaster relief, these efforts are often undermined by issues such as the misuse of funds, financial exploitation of congregants, an overemphasis on miracles, and the inefficient use of resources. Therefore, it is recommended that to mitigate the misuse of public charity donations and ensure that funds are used for their intended purposes, churches should establish and enforce strict financial management and reporting practices. Independent audits and transparency in financial dealings can build trust and ensure that resources are effectively utilized for development projects. Churches should also consider creating oversight committees that include members from the congregation to monitor financial activities and ensure accountability. To mention but a few.

Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The church emphasizes services to mankind and love for fellow men; the churches have a superior opportunity to be initiators and sponsors of societal development because they are not only custodians of the religion (Oyewole, 2018; Adeyemo, 2019). Historically, the Christian religion is both spiritual and social. Jesus, the founder of the religion, did not only engage in evangelism, he was also concerned about the welfare of the people during his earthly ministry. This is one of the areas of operation of the contemporary church (Aderibigbe, 2020). Social transformation activities are described by James, one of the authors of the Bible, as true religion, which entails visits to widows, orphans, prisoners, and the sick (James 1:27, New International Version). As earlier adduced in Matthew’s gospel, spiritual piousness is not the sole criterion for entering into paradise; ministering to the needs of the poor or failure to do so is also a determinant of the final fate of the Christian (Matthew 25:35-40, New International Version). It can therefore be said that the imperative of the church influencing the society is one of the mandates of Christianity (Oladele, 2015).
The gospel as preached in the early church in the Acts of the Apostles (4:32-36) encompassed the physical ministrations to the physical needs of the people of the church community(Ibrahim, 2018). This tells us that the church’s proclamation of the gospel must be done in such a way that the gospel message finds meaningful expression in people’s lives and their milieus (Adewole, 2017). This was the dimension the missionaries who brought the gospel to various societies in Nigeria. This shows that the gospel transcends Charismatic vociferation because it also addressed the physical needs of the people. The gospel that does not consider the physical need of its target community will not make impacts (Adebayo, 2019).
The social relevance of the church has always generated intense debate. To some, the church is living up to expectation as an agent of transformation while others opine that instead of transforming the society, she has become a liability (Ajayi & Fasoranti, 2015). Obviously, apart from spirituality, religion is also a social phenomenon influencing every institution in the society. In this regard, the church has always operated beyond the pulpit, given the need to transform and develop the society (Ekundayo, 2016).
In the light of the above, many churches in Nigeria have been involved in various programmes and initiatives which stimulate societal development. For instance, as reported by Adeleke Reporters (2020), the lead pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, The Bridge (Living Seed) in Ikeja, Lagos, Leke Adeboye, provided meals, clothing, and free medical checkups for over 5,000 people at the Ikeja City Mall on Sunday, 27th May. Similarly, churches such as The Transforming Church, The Christ Embassy, The Living Faith Worldwide, The Transformation Church, Salvation Ministries, Gateway Assembly, House on the Rock, among many others are involved in several social and humanitarian activities to better the lot of members and non-members alike. These activities manifest in support for the needy and victims of disasters (Olatunji, 2021; Ibrahim, 2020).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The noble role of religion in promoting not only the ideal ethical relationship between God and man but also societal peace and development has been called into question considering the levels of perceived atrocities and exploitation committed in the name of religion in Nigeria (Afolayan, 2016; Okonkwo, 2019). Religion, like politics, draws its strength from its potency to induce or bring about change in the attitudes of its adherents, either positively or negatively (Olaleye, 2020). Thus, Christianity, whether seen as a religion or a way of life, and the church particularly as an emblem of Christ, should be a useful vessel for the sustainable development of the Nigerian people and society (Ajayi & Akinwumi, 2017).
However, Christianity in Nigeria, especially contemporary Pentecostal movements, portrays the stark reality of ‘rich churches, poor people’ with a bourgeois few expropriating the unsuspecting masses of the church members to enrich themselves through various means (Ojo, 2014). These means range from actual conversion of tithes and offerings, monetization of prayers and miracles, defrauding of church members, glorification of sowing of seeds and gift endowments, selling of ‘Holy Spirit’, handkerchief and anointing oil, among others (Ukah, 2016). No doubt, these acts promote members’ dependency and underdevelopment of a people’s economy (Agazue, 2021). Therefore, the reality of the multi-dimensional level of poverty in Nigeria in sharp contrast with the affluence of the churches and pastors prompts this study to examine the role of the Church in societal development: a case study of Nigerian society.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The overall aim of this study is to critically examine the role of the Church in societal development: a case study of Nigerian society. Hence, the study will be channeled to the following specific objectives;

1.8 Limitation of the Study
Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:
5.1 Introduction
This chapter summarizes the findings on the role of the Church in societal development: a case study of Nigerian society. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.2 Summary of the Study
In this study, our focus was to examine the role of the Church in societal development: a case study of Nigerian society. The study was specifically focus to determine the extent of church involvement in societal development in Nigeria; evaluate the positive contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria; determine the effectiveness of church-led development programs in addressing poverty and underdevelopment in Nigeria; and evaluate the negative contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria.
The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 141 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are Members of The Transforming Church, Gwarinpa, Abuja. Data were collected through questionnaire distribution, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores.
The key findings shows that;
- The church has been highly involved in societal development in Nigeria
- The result of the analysis also shows that the positive contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria includes; implementation of poverty alleviation through charity and social programs, promoting education through the establishment of schools, and offering of scholarships, improving access to medical services in the society, job creation, providing vocational training and skill acquisition programs to reduce unemployment, and serving as an instrumental in disaster relief and providing support during emergencies.
- Likewise, the findings shows that the church-led development programs in addressing poverty and underdevelopment in Nigeria have not been very effective.
- Lastly, the analysis indicates that the negative contributions of church towards societal development in Nigeria includes; misuse of public charity donations for pastors enrichment, exploitation of congregants financially for personal gain, fostering of dependency on miracles rather than encouraging practical solutions to problems, and the proliferation of churches has led to the misuse of land and resources that could be used otherwise.
5.3 Conclusions
Conclusively, while the church in Nigeria has made significant contributions to societal development, particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, job creation, and disaster relief, these efforts are often undermined by issues such as the misuse of funds, financial exploitation of congregants, an overemphasis on miracles, and the inefficient use of resources. To enhance the effectiveness of church-led development initiatives, there is a need for greater transparency, accountability, and a balanced approach that combines spiritual support with practical solutions. By addressing these challenges, the church will play an even more impactful role in promoting societal development in Nigeria.
5.4 Recommendation
Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:
- To mitigate the misuse of public charity donations and ensure that funds are used for their intended purposes, churches should establish and enforce strict financial management and reporting practices. Independent audits and transparency in financial dealings can build trust and ensure that resources are effectively utilized for development projects. Churches should also consider creating oversight committees that include members from the congregation to monitor financial activities and ensure accountability.
- To prevent the financial exploitation of congregants, churches should prioritize financial education programs that teach members about responsible giving and personal financial management.
- While spiritual support is a vital aspect of church activities, there should be a balanced approach that also promotes practical solutions to societal problems. Churches should integrate vocational training, health education, and community development projects with their spiritual programs.
