This project takes a look at the effectiveness of working capital management of business. This work reports the working capital status of a firm at a particular time, the firm’s activities and the resulting profits or losses during the most recent period. Here, we faced with the problem of determining the actual profit an organization makes at a particular time or the loss such an organization incurs. Therefore, the purpose of this study includes, to determine whether the management of most business use their working capital profitability to ascertain whether working capital reports are useful to various groups and people such that they rely on the accountant to provide the information needed by management and also to equally enable the management determine whether the firm is making thee required and needed profit.

The researcher used the primary and secondary data which were collected through the questionnaires administered to decision makers of Calabar Cement Company. Personal interview with the management of the company was equally used. A total of 30 questionnaires were administered and all of them did not return. The technique used was the judgment sampling because it allowed the researcher to select a sample by this personal judgment. Also, percentage analysis and Chi-square was used to test the hypotheses.

Finally, it was discovered that most firms don’t take time to prepare their working capital reports, thus leading to misrepresentation of facts. Sometimes, however, the languages used by accountants are ambiguous and this makes it difficult for managers to understand the report made to them. It was hence recommended that managers should ensure that accountants take time in preparing their accounts in such a way that they will understand.

Time involved and the cost of the research instrument i.e. structure questionnaires and oral interviews of those concerned the scope of this job is limited to Calabar where the factory is located.

With necessary beliefs and confidence that the respondents in their answer will be honest and correct in answers given.

Another main limitation is the ability of the respondent to give the required information as at when due. To gather information as it regards to companies mode of operation and management style taking into consideration source of funds, credit facilities and other financial institution that is directly or indirect to these companies.

Time is one of the other factors to use as to set respondents’ answers some of the existing questionnaire as it affects the company. These limitations are peculiar to the study. To structure the information from the respondents and as it affects the effectiveness of working capital in a company’s performance that is the thrust of this work.

1.10 Definition Of Terms

1. Working Capital:

This could be defined using two different concepts; that is the gross concept and net concept.

2. Gross Concept:

This simply termed working capital refers to the firm’s investment in current assets.

3. Net Concept:

The net working capital concept refers to the difference between current assets and current liabilities.

4. Current Assets:

These are the assets which can be converted into cash within an accounting year or operational cycle.

5. Cash:

This is the measure of current assets since current liabilities are paid of in cash. However, earmarked cash held for specific purpose such as plan expansion should not be considered as current compensating balance under bank loan agreements cannot in most cases be regarded as “free cash”. Cash in excess of current requirement made for the purpose of earning a return on these funds.

6. Stocks:

These are considered as current assets except in cases where there are excess of current requirement. Such excess inventories which should be shown as non-current must be distinguished from inventories such as tobacco which require a long ageing cycle.

7. Prepayments:

These are considered current, not because they can be converted into cash but rather they represent advance payments for services and supplies which would otherwise require the current outlay of cash.

8. Excess Working Capital:

Effectiveness of working capital could be defined as the availability of sufficient funds to be used for all short term or current assets required for the daily operations by a affirm. It summed up to the excess of current assets over current liabilities.

This research project is based on the evaluation of the effectiveness of working capital management in company’s as a case study in conducting this research work the researcher was best in knowing how effectively working capital management influence commented the problems that the effectiveness of working capital management.
In chapter two relevant related literatures was reviewed by the researcher. The due collected were analyzed using chi-square distribution table and percentage. This listed hypothesis and analysis of data revealed the following:

  1. There is a significance relationship between the effectiveness of working capital management and company’s performance.
  2. There is relationship between the effectiveness of working capital management and company’s performance.
  3. There is a significant relationship between injection of capital and company’s performance.
  4. That working capital report help the management determine its level of liquidity.
  5. That working capital information helps management in making capital investment and other necessary in business operations.
  6. That the company derives sufficient benefit from working capital report.

5.2 Conclusion From The Study

The growing and changing business world today has made it imperative for all entrepreneurs, managers and corporate bodies to look into all the traces of financial and poor management problems so as to avoid the crumbling for their business.

The study which aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of working capital management taken Calabar Cement Company has been conducted through the administration of questionnaire and other research instrument. The hypothesis were tested through the use of statistical technique of chi-square based on the analysis made from the questionnaire distributed to the company effectiveness working capital management significantly influence company’s performance.

5.3 Recommendation

Having known the importance of working capital management in business operations and based on the findings from the study, the following recommendations were made to help the company manufacturing sectors as a whole.
Equal guidance should be provided for so that management level will work on the same assumptions targeted objectives and agenda. They should be maintained at any given point in time.

Optimal level of inventory should be ascertained before order I being place by customers. This will increase the turnover so as to enable it meet up with the day to day operation cost, reduce stock out and loss on sales companies should intensify their effort collecting accounts.

The management should seek for alternative ways of raising additional capital such as the issue of chares since the cost of finance loan is very high absolute plants should be sold out.

The company should Endeavour to minimize expenditure or excessive cot in time as management by objective should be adopted by the company and practiced.

The department handling the purchase of raw material should be thoroughly investigated and the steps hey take to ensure that supplier keep to their obligations should review.

The management should try as much as possible dues method of employee valuation so that feed back on the performance of each worker or team work can be appraised thus will help check ineffectiveness and lead to the achievement of the company’s set objectives.
