Chapter One


1.1 Introduction

Oxford advanced learners dictionary defined Landscape as anything seen while looking across a large area of land. Landscaping refers to any activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land, it equally involves the proper planning and design of the physical environment. The term landscape is divided into three different type and they include.

Functional Landscape:

This can as well be called domestic landscape which means the landscape of inhabited places. That is ensuring comfort in the inhabitable area for the benefit of man.

Ideal Landscape:

This kind of landscape is specifically dedicated to the planning of parks, courts, squares and pleasure grounds. Basically for ceremonial reasons and other out door activities. And finally

Wilderness Landscape.

The term landscape refers to any activity that modifies the visible feature of an area of land. It equally involves the proper and adequate planning of land form so as to meet the comfort of man. Some of the features of land area which could be modified for the natural comfort of man include:

Living elements such as plants and animal; or what is commonly referred as gardening, the art and craft of growing plants with a goal of creating a very comfortable environment. The landscape of any environment shall provide all the necessary facility needed for a well planned environment. Ranging from car parks, provision of foot paths, provision of places of ceremony and planting of trees for the proper provision of shade in the environment, and adequate protection against radiant rays from the sun.


1.2 Statement of Problem

The area in question which is the Faculty of Agriculture in Enugu state University of Science and Technology Ebano City Agbani. The site was built without landscaping, and as a result of this, there is no functionality in the environment. For example, there are no parking lots provided for the lecturer and students in the faculty, there is no other place of convenience provided for the students or other visitors, outside the ones in various offices which are meant for the lecturers alone. Again, because of the improper drainage facility in the area, there is a very poor disposal of storm water in the area. Moreso we equally intend to solve the problem of land slide noticed in the site.


1.3 Aim and Objectives

The aim of the study is to improve the visual aesthetics of the whole environment at large and make the faculty more convenient for man through the provision of different facilities lacking in the area.


1.4 Objectives

The objectives are those principled processes we intend to follow so as to actualize our goal.

  1. Carrying out an in-depth study on the area so as to understand the site characteristics.
  2. Secondly, to carryout a research on the faculty and departments so as to know the needs of the total population.
  3. To articulate a good proposal, which would be completely cost effective and economically viable.

1.5 Different Functions of Landscaping

(a) Landscape for Habitat and Soil Conservation:

This the type of landscape which is carried out for the proper conservation of the land. It equally involves the protection of different plant specie to avoid outright extinction. It equally helps in the prevention of some related problem like erosion and land slide. It is usually achieved through the proper planting of trees in the affected areas.

(b) Landscape to Create Shelter Belts and Barriers:

In this case, land is used to create shelter in the environment. This is equally achieved through planting of trees to absorb the radiant rays from the sun.


1.6 Elements of Landscape

Landscape design is usually described as unique area in environmental design and planning. It is unique in the sense that what would actually be seen or called a landscape scene in an environment are elements in that particular environment presented in a peculiar way. According to Lynch’s questionnaire, some of the elements of landscape are.

Paths:

Paths are dominant element in landscaping. Other elements are arranged and related along them. This is very essential for free circulation within the landscaped area.

Nodes:

They focal points which people move into as they circulate within the city.

District:

This is a section of a city which displays high degree of homogeneity. That is to say that most of the components of such areas most have so many things in common.

Landmarks:

These are points of reference, which do not take much activity as the node. They are those areas which are unique or memorable.

Edges:

These describes the boundaries and barriers, they include some of the linear element that bind a particular space.
