Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the causes of anti social behavior in selected public secondary schools and possible way out using Etche Local Government Area, River State as a case study. The study was specifically set to assess the causes of anti social behavior among secondary schools students in Etche Local Government Area, River State, identify the patterns of anti social behavior exhibited by secondary schools students in Etche Local Government Area, River State, assess the consequences of anti social behavior in public secondary schools in Etche Local Government Area, River State, and proffer the possible way out. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of teachers and students of some selected secondary schools in Etche Local Government Area, River State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the causes of anti social behavior among secondary schools students in Etche Local Government Area, River State includes: peer pressure, inadequate school discipline policies, lack of parental supervision, and socio-economic factors (e.g., poverty). The study also revealed that the consequences of anti social behavior in public secondary schools in Etche Local Government Area, River State includes: reduced academic performance, higher dropout rates, disruption of learning environment, and escalation of aggressive behavior. Therefore, it is recommended that schools should develop and enforce clear, consistent, and fair discipline policies to manage student behavior effectively. Training for teachers on classroom management and conflict resolution is essential. To mention but a few.
