Abstract


This study was carried out to study of a natural or artificial developed environment using Raphia Hookeri Mann & Wendl in Homegardens of Ika Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. Multistage sampling method was used to select the sampled villages and homegardens from the three clans in Ika LGA. Quadrats of 10m x 10m were established at each sample homegarden for field enumeration Oral interviews were conducted on homegarden owners to determine the ages of the species, method of regeneration and problems associated with the conservation of the plant. The results showed that the male and female respondents were 64.67% and 35.33% . The age classes of respondents were35-45 years (55.87%) and 46-65 years (44.13%). Christianity constituted 76.40% of the respondents. Respondents with no formal education were 20.67% while 15.20% obtained Ordinary National Diploma (OND)/ National Certificate in Education (NCE). Respondents that were full-time farmers were 37.67% and 54.40% combined trading and farming. Respondents who were married were 57.33% widows and 26.67% widowers. Majority of the respondents owned homegarden land (98.93%) while 1.07% hired land annually for cultivation. The population density of R. hookeri in Ika LGA was 18.13 per ha. There was significant variation between age classes and the most preferred method of regenerating of R. hookeri was artificial method. Slow growth, dormancy, inadequate land and seedlings for planting were the major drawback for the conservation of R. hookeri.

Introduction


The laws of nature indicate that the environment and its constituents are created things that have numerous qualities embedded in them for appreciation. The complex nature of the environment, however, renders it somehow difficult for one to fathom its aesthetic characteristics. Nevertheless, artificial environment is a model of the environment where the simulation model is operating. Environment model is completely controllable by the modeler. Particular environment models are highly relevant when modeling adaptive elements of the system or when using adaptive capabilities of the agents contained within the model. Nature is regarded not as an adversary or resource to be subdued and exploited, but as something with an autonomous and worthy of existence in itself (Hettinger, 2005; Budd, 2000; Crumley, 2001; Carlson, 2002; Bharucha, 1999), and the wilderness is not regarded as “ugly or as a blemish on existence, but as something not only admirable but admirable aesthetically” (Bharucha, 1999).

The natural environment encompasses all living and non-living things occurring naturally, meaning in this case not artificial. The term is most often applied to the Earth or some parts of Earth. This environment encompasses the interaction of all living species, climate, weather and natural resources that affect human survival and economic activity (Johnson et al; 1997).

The main purpose of this study is to critically assess a study of a natural or artificial developed environment.


Significance of the Study

In this study, the researcher set out to assess study of a natural or artificial developed environment. Therefore, this study is expected that it will be of immense interest to government on how to develop the natural and artificial environments, Departments of Biology and Environmental Science students and the general public.

This study will also help to serve as a reference source to students, individuals and future researchers into what to carry out on further research.
