Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Workplace stress is a growing global problem, impacting not just people’s health and well-being, but also the organization as a whole, since the majority of job roles include aspects that cause stress in the individuals. According to Henry and Evans (2018), stress has an influence on people and their relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Additionally, it has an influence on various facets of society, including socializing and even the economy, as a result of the way stress affects productivity (Imtiaz & Ahmad, 2019).
Bagger (2015) defines stress as a mental and physical state that adversely impacts an individual’s productivity, effectiveness, personal health, and work quality. Job stress sufferers report poorer job satisfaction and a worse quality of life at work. Furthermore, stress may be characterized as a “imbalance between expectations and resources” or as “pressure that exceeds one’s perceived ability to handle” (Manzoor, 2017).
The influence of stress on an employee’s job performance is one of the most serious issues we face today, and it happens in our daily culture. Employees are the organization’s greatest workforce, working longer hours as their increasing degrees of responsibility need them to push themselves even more rigorously in order to fulfill increased expectations for job performance. In light of this, the style and amount of competitiveness with which we are confronted have contributed to the level of stress experienced by employees. The negative and expensive impacts of stress highlight the need of developing strategies to mitigate stressors inside the organization. Organizations who failed to use strategies to manage and reduce stress witnessed their employees seek better possibilities elsewhere (Ogboso & Amah, 2019). According to Baridam (2016), stress management encompasses a diverse array of techniques and psychotherapies targeted at lowering a person’s level of stress, especially chronic stress, in order to improve everyday functioning. Stress manifests itself in a number of physical and mental symptoms that vary according to the individual’s circumstances. These may involve physical health worsening as well as depression. Stress management is a critical component of living a happy and successful life in current culture. While life presents a number of stresses that may be tough to handle, stress management provides a variety of strategies for coping with anxiety and preserving overall well-being. Given the above, this research will examine the influence of stress management on employee performance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Workplace stress jeopardizes an organization’s well-being and its workers’ performance (Musyoka, 2018). The issue is becoming a significant concern for many organizations as a result of the associated costs and adverse consequences on the organizations’ and workers’ performance (AL-Omar, 2015). According to Azizolla (2019), work stress occurs when individuals struggle to meet work demands and their sense of well-being is compromised. Kazmi (2018) asserts that manufacturing is an intrinsically stressful work environment due to lengthy work hours, ethical issues, tough clients, and incompatible demands. As a result, this sector is one of many that are impacted by the aforementioned issue. As a result, it is not immune from the aforementioned repercussions. As a result, it becomes essential to use appropriate stress management strategies at work in order to improve and solidify performance. Thus, stress management comprises activities aimed at mitigating the effect of workplace stressors. These may be tailored to the person, with the goal of enhancing the individual’s capacity to deal with stressors (O’Meara, 2016). Notably, there is a dearth of empirical data about the effect of job stress management on employee performance in Nigeria in general and at Unilever in particular.
