Abstract

This research work is about the statistical analysis of curative efficiency of drugs and herbs against malaria. The work was conduct at Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo state. It is about the introductory of the research work. On the review of related literatures; it was reviewed that for centuries ago, people have been suffering malaria till date, due to parasite transmitted by female mosquitoes of the genus anopheles which have resistant to some antimalaria medicines and insecticides. However, the antimalaria medicine (drugs and herbs) had been researched for the treatment of the effects of the parasite. But the challenges that led the researcher into the research work is the effect of two medicines, how malaria is diagnosed, prevented and control and its characteristics.

The methodology of the research work; it comprises the nature of the population under study, sample size, sample method adopted, resource materials, research design adopted, limitations, definition of terms, instrument for the data analysis and decision rule. In the presentation and analysis, Chi-square test statistics was used to test the dependent of the drugs of recovery. Finally, the summary, conclusion, findings and recommendations.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

This research is about the statistical analysis of curative efficiency of drugs and herbs against malaria. This parasite, malaria is very common disease in tropical and subtropical region. It has killed millions of people and still on the realm of the living causing abnormality in human health.

However, with the number of trials and tribulations in this life, it is often difficult to remember that people living in this nation are suffering from misfortunes as well. Amidst the concern is the incessant flu, there is much larger crisis in this country, Nigeria; malaria.

Malaria is defined in African encyclopedia is an infectious disease that is caused by parasite that lives in the liver and red blood cells of human beings. The disease is very common and is spread by female mosquitoes of the genus anopheles

The effect of this disease ruins human life and put many to early death. The disease results to dangerous complications such as cerebral malaria (which affects the brain and make the patients unconscious) black water fever (which damages the kidney, and make urines dark in colour) and also reduce the functions of the immune system and many more. To the effect of this disease, researchers were motivated and came up with anti-malaria drugs and herbs, to fight malaria disease.

Moreover, this research has about five chapters, chapter one deals with the introductory aspect of the malaria, background of the study, statement of the problems, research questions, justifications, the scope and the objective of the study. In the subsequent chapters, chapter two is on the literature review, followed by the methodology (chapter three), the chapter four is the presentation and analysis of the data and finally chapter five is about the summary, conclusion, findings and recommendations.

1.1 Background Of The Study

Owerri-North local government area is one of the local government areas in Imo state created on 27th August, 1991 under Ibrahim Babangida. In almost all local government areas in Abia state, the population of females is more than that of males except in Aba area (Aba north and Aba south LGA’s) where the population of males is more than that of females. The people are good farmers and keen businessmen. The the functions of the immune system and many more. To the effect of this disease, researches were motivated and came up with anti-malaria drugs and herbs, to fight malaria disease.

However, this research has about five chapters, one deals with the introductory aspect of the malaria background of the study, statement of the problems, research questions, justifications, the scope and the objective of the study. In the subsequent chapters, chapter two is on the literature review, followed by the methodology (chapter three), the chapter four is the presentation and analysis of the data and finally chapter five is about the summary, conclusion, findings and recommendations.

Owerri North Local Government areas in Imo State, the population of females is more than that of males except in Owerri West and Owerri Municipal L.G.A. where the population of males is more that that of females.

The people are good farmers and keen business me. The dispersed of village settlement is traditional among the Igbos.

The local government is situated on a plain with Capital (UTCH) in Owerri North is a local government area of Imo Stat, Nigeri.

Its headquarters are in the town of Oria Uratta. It has an area of 198 km2 and a population of 175, 395 at the 2006 census. The portal code of the area is 460

1.2 Statement Of The Problems

Today, we have drugs and herbs for the treatment of malaria. But in a critical appraisal to this work, problems necessitated follows, the way people diagnose malaria prior treatment, the side effects associated to both medicine (drugs and herbs), the particular medicine patients rely mostly to treat malaria, the curative efficiency of drugs and herbs and how people resist to malaria infections.

1.3 Research Questions

In view of the above problems, the following research questions were considered necessary,

  1. How do people diagnose malaria prior treatment?
  2. How do people treat malaria?
  3. How efficient is the medicine used in the treatment of malaria?
  4. What are the side effects associates to the medicines?
  5. How do people prevent themselves from mosquito bite?
  6. How many days do patient take to recover?

1.4 Significance Of The Study

The research is important to the reader and infected patients, as it reaches forth compendium on the result of the research work carried on the curative efficiency of drugs and herbs against malaria.

  1. To government, it will provide them the basic steps to policy or decision regards to malaria cases and its anti-malaria medicines.
  2. To patients, the findings and recommendations will be a focus point each time malaria is diagnose of the symptoms occur. Hence the study in assists them on the use of anti-malaria medicines (drugs and herbs).

1.5 Scope Of The Study

The boundary mapped out for the study is Aba North LGA, from the geographical area, a large sample size (N>30) were randomly drawn and surveyed.

The study involves primary data collection with questionnaires, interview and observation method of data collection to obtained data for the analysis.

A fragment of the population was studied to reduce constraints that may limit the research work and its generalization about the entire population.

1.7 Objective Of The Study

Consequently upon the identified problems of this study, the researcher had the basic objective measure of:

  1. To ascertain the independent efficiency of drugs and hers against malaria.
  2. To identify the major side effects of drugs and herbs.
  3. To ascertain the number of days a particular medicine cures malaria effectively.

Chapter Five

Summary, Findings, Conclusions, And Recommendations.

5.1 Introduction

This chapter deals with the summary of the fields work, findings, conclusion and recommendations.

5.2 Summary

The research conducted is on the statistical analysis of curative efficiency of drugs and herbs against malaria at Aba north LGA Abia state. On the review, according to WHO, each year more than 300 million case of malaria are diagnosed and more than 1.5 million dies of the disease. These become more difficult to control and treat because of the parasite which has become resistance to anti-malaria medicines. Scientist also reviewed that malaria is caused by female mosquitoes of the germs anopheles and affects human health due to the parasite causing the disease and its completion of life cycle in the human red blood cells. The effect brings about changes in colour of human urine, palm, eyes skin, and some other parts of human body, which can be detected by the use of technique or physical patients’ appearance.

5.3 Findings

From the research conducted, it has observed that:

  1. Approximately 100% of the population had suffered malaria
  2. Out of 100% malaria patients treated, 44% adopted drugs, 33% herbs and 23% both.
  3. 19% of the population seeks for medical doctors’ attention for diagnosis prior to treatment of malaria.
  4. On the test carried out, the result shows that the curative efficiency of drugs and herbs are independent.
  5. For prevention and control of malaria, 80% of the population use insecticides, 56% untreated mosquito net, 16.5% use treated mosquito bed net and 1.5% used none.
  6. There is much side effect associated to the use of anti-malaria drugs than herbs in treatment of malaria.
  7. Days of recovery depends on the type of anti-malaria medicine a patient used.
  8. Anti-malaria drugs mostly cure malaria patient on the interval of 3-6 days with many side effect, while anti-malaria herbs cu re malaria patients on the interval of 5-8day with fewer side effects.
  9. Anti-malaria herbs do not have itching effect.

5.4 Conclusion

Based on the research analysis and findings, the curative efficiency of anti-malaria medicine is independent of the types of medicine used while the days of recovery are dependent on the type of anti malaria medicine used.

5.5 Recommendations

Hence, after through recapping of the result of this study; the curative efficiency of drugs and he’s are independent of the type of anti-malaria medicines used; I recommend that:

  1. People should seek for medical diagnosis (medical doctor or herbalist) prior treatment of malaria
  2. The treatment of malaria with anti-malaria herbs hence they have less side effects.
  3. The adoption of techniques to prevention and control of mosquito.
  4. A research on “the effect of insecticides to human health”
