Socio-Cultural Factors Affecting The Promotion Of Girl Child Education In Ofu Local Government, Kogi State

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the socio-cultural factors affecting the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State. Specifically the study was set to determine the extent gender stereotypes affects the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State, determine the extent early marriage practices affects the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State, determine the extent parental attitudes towards education affects the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State, and determine the extent religious beliefs affects the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of teachers and students of some selected secondary schools in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 266 respondents and 259 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi- square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that socio-cultural factors such as gender stereotypes, early marriage practices, parental attitudes, and religious beliefs significantly hinder the promotion of girl child education in Ofu Local Government, Kogi State. Therefore, it is recommended that counsellor should encourage other concerned stakeholders to show positive attitudes towards the female students in terms of sharpening their personalities; physically, socially, emotionally, mentally, morally, psychologically in order to enhance their academic performance. This could be done through conducting seminars and enlightenment campaigns on radio, television and various social media platforms. To mention but few.
