Abstract


In the era of technology, education scenario has changed rapidly; teachers are facing difficulties to perform. There is high pressure from every point of corner to bring reforms. After technology evaluation, there has been lot of competition, access to internet, search engines, social networking websites, electronic gadget and changing lifestyle. The knowledge of information is available at a mouse click.

The student community no longer has to depend upon teacher for acquiring knowledge that is why academicians report poor attendance and placement for the business students. This is the time to develop new and innovative teaching pedagogies. Keeping this in view, several changes have to be taken into consideration like education of business in terms of increased coverage of syllabus, best infrastructure, open education resources (i.e. database sites), rich themes in curricula, industry based, society based, research based syllabi, classroom instructions, Field experience, E-learning, individual projects, teaching language (English), guest lectures, case method, workshops, seminars, live projects, interactive lectures, projects presentations, tutorials, periodic class tests, management games, film reviews, field surveys, grooming sessions, business lab, book reviews, social projects, mentoring, observation, newspapers & magazines, TV channels, internet, role pays, group discussions, simulation, social drama and passive note taking mode to active participation and so on and implementation of measurement parameters for achievement of quality assessment, etc.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Research is the process of conducting creative and systematic work with the purpose of increasing the wealth of knowledge and to invent new processes, methods and applications. Research is used to determine facts, results of previous work, provide solution to new or existing problems, and develop new theories. The aims of basic research are for documentation, discovery, interpretation of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge. Creswell, J. W. (2008).

Innovation is the development of new idea, creative thoughts, new device or method. It involves the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs. Innovation leads to the provision of new and more-effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are made available to markets, governments and society. Maranville, S. (1992). Business education is a branch of education which involves the acquisition and teaching of skills relating to the operations of the business industry. Business education provide students the knowledge of the fundamentals of business practices. Business education programs consist of the basic theories of management and production. The teaching of the processes of decision making; the philosophy, theory, and psychology of management and its practical applications; business start-up and operational procedures. MacIntosh, Robert; Beech, Nic; Bartunek, Jean; Mason, Katy; Cooke, Bill; Denyer, David (2017).The study seek to appraise the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid pace of development in various sectors of the economy poses great challenge to the the teaching of business education in contemporary times. While we are in the midst of a transformational age of information, many of business education curriculums is insufficient to meet the need of the times. Many institutions still use the same curriculum models used in past in the fact of new technology and global market. The problem confronting the study is to appraise the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators.


1.3 Objective of the Study

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators;

The specific objectives include

  1. To determine the relevance of research and innovation.
  2. To determine the importance of business education.
  3. To determine the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the relevance of research and innovation?
  2. What is the importance of business education?
  3. What is the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators?

1.5 Statement of the Hypothesis

The statement of the hypothesis for the study is stated in Null as follows

  • HO The level of research and innovation is low.
  • Ho The level of business education is low.
  • Ho The impact of research and innovation on business education as perceived by business educators is negative.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study investigates the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.


1.8 Limitation of the Study

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Educational Supervision Defined

Educational Supervision consist of all effort involving school officials directed at t providing leadership to educational workers or teachers to enhance an improved educational system and institution. The process involves the deployment of human and material resources

Education Defined

Education is viewed as the process of inviting truth and possibility. It is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.

Research Defined

Research is the process of conducting creative and systematic work with the purpose of increasing the wealth of knowledge and to invent new processes, methods and applications.

Innovation Defined

Innovation is the development of new idea, creative thoughts, new device or method. It involves the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs. Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

5.1 Preamble

This chapter presents the summary and conclusion that can be drawn from the study. It also presents the researchers recommendations with regards to the findings of the study and proposed areas for further studies by other researcher.


5.2 Summary

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators; the specific objectives include

  1. To determine the relevance of research and innovation.
  2. To determine the importance of business education.
  3. To determine the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators.

Findings from the study reveal that the level of research and innovation is high. The level of business education is high. The impact of research and innovation on business education as perceived by business educators is positive.


5.3 Conclusion

This paper aims to investigate the role of research and innovation in business education as perceived by business educators.

The study is to be carried in Uyo among business educators.

As a result of the inability of the researcher to effectively study the whole population strength, a representative number was chosen as the sample size population. 60 respondents was used as the sample size. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources. Primary data was obtained through questionnaire and personal interviews with the respondents. Tables and simple percentage was used as technique of analyzing the research questions.
Findings from the study revealed that the level of research and innovation is high. The level of business education is high. The impact of research and innovation on business education as perceived by business educators is positive.
It is recommended that governments should consider adopting a coherent and comprehensive approach to innovation policy based on empowering people to innovate.


5.4 Recommendations

Governments should consider adopting a coherent and comprehensive approach to innovation policy based on five priorities:

Empowering People to Innovate:

Promoting broad and relevant education and skill acquisition; improving teacher quality; using tertiary education institutions, including independent, competitive and entrepreneurial universities, as bridges to government and the private sector; encouraging entrepreneurial education; harnessing internationally mobile talent via dynamic immigration policies; and involving consumers in innovation.

Unleashing Innovation:

Supporting innovative firms to translate new ideas into jobs and wealth; creating favourable tax climates for entrepreneurial businesses; helping small and medium-sized firms to enhance their expertise; facilitating access to finance; and protecting intellectual property rights for innovative businesses.

Creating and Applying Knowledge:

Promoting excellence in science as a prime motor of innovation and collaboration between scientific research and the private sector; providing reliable and high-speed communication networks such as broadband networks to support innovation; establishing systems to ensure incentives, protect patents and provide collaborative mechanisms including licensing markets, pools and clearing houses for access to knowledge; and underpinning of efficient knowledge networks and market structures by governments.

Addressing Global and Social Issues through Innovation:

Committing to collective solutions to global challenges; exploring new models for the governance of multilateral co-operation in international science, technology and innovation; balancing public and private investment in research; and enhancing educational attainment and strengthening framework conditions in middle and low-income countries which lack the necessary foundations for generating advanced knowledge and innovation.

Improving Governance and Management:

Adopting “whole-of-government” approaches to policies for innovation via co-ordinating mechanisms and medium and long-term planning; tapping into the benefits of coherent and complementary interaction amongst local, national, regional and international co-operation; and improving evaluation methods to better monitor national innovation efforts and ensure essential feedback into the policy-making process.
