The Role Of Business Education In The Development Of Entrepreneurship


Abstract


This study is on the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. The total population for the study is 200 staff of SME in Uyo, AkwaIbom state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made managers,secretaries, content developers andjunior staff was used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Education remains a pivot upon which the wheels of the society revolve. Farrant (1964) defined education as the process of learning to live as a useful and acceptable member of the society. From this definition, it is obvious that the essence of education is functionality. So since the desire of every society is to achieve a sustainable level of economic development, this could be possible through embarking on entrepreneurial activities by the citizens of the society. This is because the public sector cannot single handedly drive in the desired level of development. Furthermore, the success of a society in entrepreneurship depends on skills and knowledge acquired by the entrepreneur. Education also equips a person with relevant skills which would lead him to better performance in his chosen career.

In line with these, Business Education which is described as an education to business and about business that could make a person to perform well as an entrepreneur. This is due to the fact that, it equips the recipients with skills which are needed for business success. Furthermore, entrepreneurship focuses on the desired ability of a person to search for investment opportunities within his environment and also be able to set up and run an enterprise based on the identified opportunities.

Based on the presentation above, it is obvious that business education could play a vital role in the development of entrepreneurship in Akwa Ibom State and in deed all the countries in the world. This owes to the fact that is based on the content of business education in Akwa Ibom State.

It is the potential of equipping the recipient with skills in Book-keeping/Accounting, Business Communication, Business Management, Marketing and Human Resource Management which are all necessary for the development and survival of business enterprises. It is thus against this background that the study looks at the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship in Akwa Ibom State.


1.2 Statement of Problem

The term Business Education has been given a variety of meanings depending on the perspective. Business Education is the systematic teaching of students the fundamental theories and processes of business. It also play a part in the achievement of the general aims of education on any level as its primary objective is the preparation of people to enter into a career to render efficient services and to advance from their present level of employment to higher levels (Osualala 2003). Basis business education affords every individual an opportunity to develop the skills, abilities and understanding that will enable him to handle competently his personal business affairs and to develop an understanding of the vocational opportunities available in the broad field of business and to assume citizenship responsibilities through enlightened participation of the business system. How true is this? Does Business education aids in the development of entrepreneurship in Akwa Ibom State?

It is based on this scenario that this research work is being carried out to examine the role of Business education in the development of entrepreneurship in Akwa Ibom State.


1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main aim of this study is to:

  1. Examine the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship.
  2. To examine the benefits of entrepreneurship development through business education.
  3. To examine the challenges of business education in the development of entrepreneurship.
  4. To evaluate measures of reducing the challenges of business education in the development of entrepreneurship.

1.4 Research Hypotheses

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

  1. H0: there is no role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship
    H1: there is role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship
  2. H02: there are no benefits of entrepreneurship development through business education
    H2: there are benefits of entrepreneurship development through business education

1.5 Significance of the Study

This work will give a clear insight on the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. The study will be beneficial to students, business men and the general public.

The study will serve as a reference to other researchers that will embark on this topic


1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study covers the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

a) Availability of Research Material:

The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

b) Time:

The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) Organizational Privacy:

Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities


1.7 Definition of Terms

Business Education:

Business Education is an aspect of Vocational and Technical Education, a specialized programme of instruction designed to provide individuals with knowledge, skills and attitudes leading to employability and advancement in office occupations as well as teaching business subjects

Development:

The process of developing or being developed

Entrepreneurship:

The people who create these businesses are called entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship has been described as the “capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit”.


1.8 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows

  • Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
  • Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
  • Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
  • Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
  • Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was on the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship


5.2 Summary

This study was onthe role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. Four objectives were raised which included: Examine the role of business education in the development of entrepreneurship, to examine the benefits of entrepreneurship development through business education, to examine the challenges of business education in the development of entrepreneurship, to evaluate measures of reducing the challenges of business education in the development of entrepreneurship. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of SME in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made managers, secretaries, content developers and junior staff was used for the study. 5.3 Conclusion

In this study it was discussed that business education is a vital tool that equips students with the needed knowledge and skills to be self reliant. In another vain, business education students can also be productive individuals who will become factors or drivers of the economy by applying the skills and ability learnt in the classroom situation into becoming entrepreneurs. In the event of becoming an entrepreneur such individuals will be able to apply the managerial skills, bookkeeping/accounting knowledge in the business that this are involved either as employees or employers of labour. It Is also pertinent to know that cost accounting knowledge can also help the entrepreneurs to forecast Into the future to know the area of business to Involve, thereby giving him/her the opportunity of making a viable decision that will benefit his/her business projection.


5.4 Recommendation

The following recommendations were made:

  1. The grant should be given to graduates who are ready to start up their own business as this will create employment.
  2. The graduate students should be encouraged to start up their own entrepreneurial business.
  3. The environment should be made conducive for business to encouraged entrepreneurs. This is a responsibility of the government and other stakeholders.
