Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The secondary school system is however a very crucial level of educational system. It is a gateway to the tertiary education and a ripe age for developing students’ potentials. Its benefits should be commensurate with the cost, for this reason, the performance at this level is of significant importance to educational planners and managers(Edem, 2019). The school as a formal organization is the centre for all teaching-learning processes. The principals and teachers as human resources are sine qua non in goal achievement of the school instructional leadership, pupils relationship, academic achievement of the students, manipulation of facilities and other areas of teaching task must be performed at the school building and within the community level(Muraina, 2017).
Principals, as the chief administrators of schools, play a pivotal role in shaping the educational environment. Their ability to manage resources, personnel, and curricula effectively determines the success of educational institutions. Research indicates that effective managerial skills among school principals are positively correlated with enhanced school performance and administrative effectiveness. According to Eze and Olusola (2018), principals who demonstrate strong leadership qualities, strategic planning, and resource management skills are better positioned to foster an environment conducive to learning. Their study highlights that these skills are essential for setting clear goals, maintaining discipline, and ensuring the optimal use of financial and human resources, which collectively enhance the school’s administrative efficiency. A school principal must function in various capacities ranging from the instructional leadership to students guidance and management of school facilities. The attitude of a good principal is when he contributes to the formulation and attainment of school goals, when he has good human relation and staff discipline, which are the yardsticks for measuring his administrative effectiveness.
The Nigerian educational system faces unique challenges, including inadequate funding, infrastructural deficits, and a high student-to-teacher ratio, which further complicate the role of school principals (Aghenta, 2021). In this context, principals who possess robust managerial skills can navigate these challenges more effectively. For instance, Ogunsaju and Ajayi (2019) argue that principals with strong problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills can better manage conflicts, engage with stakeholders, and implement innovative solutions to address infrastructural and resource-related challenges.
Moreover, the impact of principals’ managerial skills extends to teacher performance and student achievement. Research by Okwori and Ede (2016) suggests that principals who are proficient in instructional leadership can significantly influence teachers’ motivation and job satisfaction. This, in turn, leads to improved teaching practices and higher student academic performance. Their findings underscore the importance of professional development programs for principals to enhance their managerial competencies.
With the schools facing increased pressure to improve teaching and learning, the duties of the school principals expand further to include the responsibility of facilitating their school’s interactions with parents and others in the school community (Gemuchu, 2014). This responsibility includes reporting to parents certain disciplinary issues, students’ level of successes in academic work and when parents have concerns. Principals also interact with parents who serve on school advisory boards and parent/teacher organizations. Principals report that they spent a significant part of their time interacting with parents of students who have been identified as needing special services (Welleer, 2016).As a result, whatever the principal does in the school by directing, coordinating, controlling and motivating will determine his/her effectiveness in carrying out the activities of school management in secondary schools.
1.2 Statement of the Study
The managerial skills of principals are integral to the administrative effectiveness of senior secondary schools in Nigeria. Effective leadership, strategic resource management, and the ability to foster a positive school climate are critical for addressing the myriad challenges faced by Nigerian schools(Eniola, 2016). However, there are speculations that principals in Sokoto south lacks adequate managerial skills which jeopardize the administrative effectiveness of the schools and teachers commitment in general. Alani (2023), posited that negative attitudes of the teachers and poor academic performance of the students in secondary schools is connected to poor managerial skills and competencies of the school principals.
