Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Academic Achievement Of Senior Secondary School Students In Biology

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement of senior secondary school students in biology in Sango Ota , Ogun State. Specifically, the study examined the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students is high. The study also checked if there is a relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student. Furthermore ,the study checked if there is a relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students. Lastly , the study examines the effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students. A total of 77 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students is high. Also, there is a relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student. Furthermore, There is a relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students. Lastly, there are effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students. The study hereby recommend that school managers and administrators should organize work shop on regular bases to train the teachers and students on the importance of developing emotional intelligence. Also , that government, school managers and administrators should give out awards and scholarship to motivate group of students that have worked cooperatively to achieve academic excellence

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The trend in the academic performance of secondary school students in Nigeria in the last two decades has become a major source of concern to all stakeholders in the education sector. This is so because of the great importance that education has on the national development of the country. There is a consensus of opinion about the fallen standard of education in Nigeria (Adebule, 2004). Parents and government are in agreement that their huge investment on education is not yielding the desired dividend (Adegbite, 2005). There is mass decline in the achievement of students in both National Examination Council (NECO) and the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE),( Dawa, Adamu and Olayomi ,2005). The annual releases of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination results (SSCE) conducted by West African Examination Council (WAEC) depicts the problematic nature and generalization of poor secondary school students’ achievement in different school subjects especially mathematics and English language among secondary school students (Adesemowo, 2005). Emotional Intelligence Education, no doubt, remains the most outstanding development priority area in the world today. The core purpose of education, unquestionably, is human development. Other things being equal, an educated person who is well or relevantly positioned in the socio-economic, cultural and political milieu is expected to be a valuable asset to the society than another individual who is illiterate and perhaps ignorant. This simple fact explains why researchers and scholars, all over the world, continue to do research into ways of improving human knowledge and development. Debates on education and human development more generally can hardly be a boring exercise. The socio-political, economic and technological developments, which bring about a high frequency of innovations and reforms, have all combined to make discussions or debates on education and human development trendy exciting and unending. Poor academic performance t is an achievement that is adjudged by the examiner as falling below an expected standard. Academic failure is not only frustrating to the students and the parents, its effects are equally grave on the society in terms of dearth of manpower in all spheres of the economy and polity (Aremu, 2000). Morakinyo (2003) agrees that the falling level of academic achievement is attributable to teacher’s non-use of verbal reinforcement strategy. Adegbite (2005) found out that the attitude of some teachers to their job is reflected in their poor attendance to lessons, lateness to school, unsavory comments about student’s performance that could damage their ego, poor method of teaching and the likes. Edun and Akanji (2008) asserted that poor academic achievement among our students is usually attributed to the school authority and teachers’ attitude to their work. Emotional Intelligence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The decline in the academic achievement of secondary school students in Nigeria has been a major source of concern to stakeholders and policy makers in the education sector. Measures taken by the government at various levels to eliminate this problem and improve the academic achievement of students have focused more on improving infrastructure, equipping the schools and providing qualified teachers, may not have produced the desired results. Poor academic achievement among secondary school students limits their potentials for advancement in career and their ability to compete effectively in an ever increasingly competitive global village. Though the curricula at the secondary school level are designed to address this inherent gap but the importance of students’ emotional standard of performance may have been seen to be missing, misunderstood or neglected. It is therefore necessary to interrupt the ugly trend of poor academic achievement among secondary students by developing and enhancing their emotional intelligence skills which have been observed to be major determinants of academic achievement because a student may recover from physical pain or injury, but may never recover from the terror and degradation of his or her emotional state

1.3 Objective of the Study

The primary objective of the study is as follows

To find out the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students
To Establish whether there is any relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student.
To find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students.
To find out the effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students.

1.4 Research Questions

What is the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students?
Is there any relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student?
What is relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis have been formulated for this study

HO1: There is no relationship between relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student.
H02: To find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of emotional intelligence on academic performance of senior secondary school students

This study will be of benefit to ministry of education as they will see the need to employ counsellor s to schools, as it will help student to be aware of their emotional state thereby, leading to an excellent academic performance.

This study will be significant to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study examines the impact of emotional intelligence on academic performance of senior secondary school students. This study will also, find out the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students. This study will further, Establish whether there is any relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student. More so, this study will find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students. Lastly , this study will find out the effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

The limitation of the study includes the following;

Time:

This is the major constraint faced by the researcher, owing the fact that the researchers work was to be done along side with other important academic work.

Finance:

This happens to be over-riding constraints now, establishment amount of money was spent on the researcher work. The work as stated earlier involved travelling to the place of case study and obtaining appointment for necessary interviews distribution and collection of questionnaires.

1.10 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows.

Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study.

5.1 Summary

In this study, our focus was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement of senior secondary school students in biology using selected senior secondary schools in Sango Ota as a case study.

The study specifically was aimed at highlighting the level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students. The study will also, Establish whether there is any relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student. Furthermore, the study will find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students.

Lastly ,the study will find out the effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students. A total of 77 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are drawn from teachers of the selected schools

5.2 Conclusion

Based on the finding of this study, the following conclusions were made:

The level of emotional intelligence of senior secondary school students is high
There is a relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement among senior secondary school student.
There is a relationship between the emotional intelligence and academic performance of senior secondary school students.
There are effect of emotional intelligence of arts and science student of senior secondary school students.

5.3 Recommendation

Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:

School managers and administrators should organize work shop on regular bases to train the teachers and students on the importance of developing emotional intelligence.
Government, school managers and administrators should give out awards and scholarship to motivate group of students that have worked cooperatively to achieve academic excellence
