Production Of Mosquitoe Repellants Insecticides (Mosquito Coil) Using Orange Peels (Cestrum)

Abstract

Mosquito repellents are substances that can be used to repel mosquitoes which is a vector that transmits malaria. A typical example of a mosquito repellent is mosquito coil which drives away mosquito when it is ignited. The smoke that is emitted from burning a mosquito coil contains active ingredients used to prevent mosquito from biting particularly during the hour of sleep having been designed to burn for hours.

These active ingredients have known to act as repellent agent which cause a distasteful environment for the mosquito and act as agents of immobilization which disturbs the food searching mechanism of the mosquito. Orange peels (Cestrum) contains oil known as Limonene oil which has a lethal effect on mosquitoes and some other insects. It can be used as active ingredient to produce mosquito coil, which when ignited, will repel mosquitoes within the limits of the smoke.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nearly, all insecticides have the potential to significantly affect ecosystem, many are toxic to human and others are concentrated in food chains. It is necessary to balance agricultural needs with environmental and health issues when using insecticides. It is crucially important that all the rural derive in Nigeria are educated on the need to eradicate insects especially mosquitoes that might breed in their environment and transmit malaria to people living within the enclave.

If insects becomes a problem despite the measures that must have been taken, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) seeks to control them using the safest possible methods targeting the approach to the particular pest. Years now, effort are geared towards controlling malaria infestation both in urban and rural areas a lot of measures are being take to reduce the number of death as a result of malaria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Recent studies showed that the smoke generated form burning mosquitoes coil is of certain health concerns. A person being exposed to the smoke coming from the coil may suffer severe headache, nausea and vomiting, the condition will be severe among asthmatic patients. The emission from one burning coil can be as high as that released from 51 burning cigarettes. This is because of the chemicals found in mosquito coils out of natural ingredients may remove these problems.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The purpose of this work is to produce mosquitoes repellent using orange peels (cestrum) wastes perse, which will save the cost of production and purchase, thereby increasing it’s availability especially in the rural areas.

If the work is successful, production of mosquitoes repellents using orange peels will provide source of employment to our teaming youths.

Also make mosquito repellent within the reach of everybody.

Thereby reducing the number of death due to malaria caused by mosquito bite.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The importance of my project work is the producing of a mosquito coil that is not harmful to our health and killing mosquito that are vector carriers of malaria sickness and is environmental friendly.

1.5 Scope of the Study

Orange peels (cestrum) will be collected and used for the production of mosquito coil. The produced coil will be tested for effectiveness performance and cost analysis should also be carried out to know if mass production will be encouraged.

Chapter Five

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.0 Introduction

An experiment was conducted on the production of mosquito repellent using orange peels.

5.1 Summary

Insecticides are substances used to kill insects, (IUPAC 2006). They include ovicides and larvicides used against insect eggs and larvae, respectively. Insecticides are used in agriculture, medicine, industry and by consumers. Insecticides are claimed to be a major factor behind the increase in the 20th-century’s agricultural productivity, (David, 1996). Nearly all insecticides have the potential to significantly alter ecosystems; many are toxic to humans and/or animals; some become concentrated as they spread along the food chain.

5.2 Conclusion

On the basis of result obtained, it can be concluded that the material to concentration and extract concentration of organic mosquito repellent agent a significant difference in Finished and mordant samples were checked for physical properties viz.; fabric stiffness, crease recovery, drape coefficient, thickness and tensile strength. These parameters were compared with untreated cotton samples. Data depicts that stiffness of cotton fabric decreases when treated with orange peel fabric becomes softer and more pliable stiffness. Crease recovery of treated samples showed increases in warp direction while little difference was observed in weft direction. Statistical analysis revealed significant difference at 1 per cent level of significance. It is observed that drapability of orange peel organic mosquito repellent improves in drapability. Drape of fabric improved in treated fabric than untreated fabric.

The difference found was significant (p<0.01).Thickness of treated samples showed significant difference in warp direction while highly significant difference in weft direction. Tensile strength of finished cotton fabric decreases in comparison to unfinished sample but statistically the difference was insignificant.

5.3 Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study the following recommendations were made:

  1. The use of many available mosquito repellents should be avoided because products that use DEET or citronella oil as the primary active ingredients have been reported to causes rashes in some people.
  2. Quality control steps should be taken essential in the production of mosquito repellents.

How to defend your research work

This is a general guide on how to defend your research work:

1. Prepare For Questions:

If you are preparing for questions that may be asked during your defense, then your answers will flow smoothly and effectively. This will prove your knowledge on the subject e.g “Production Of Mosquitoe Repellants Insecticides (Mosquito Coil) Using Orange Peels (Cestrum)“, and strengthening your argument. Ask friends and family, read your work for them to listen to your presentation, and write down questions. You may be lucky the panel will ask you those you have already prepared on.

2. Strong Summary:

Summarizing your chapters will help keep your audience focused because it is easy for a mind to drift, so providing summaries will ensure your panel will follow along, even if they lose focus for a brief moment. Visual aides, such as graphs and power-point presentations can be very helpful. If you are going to use these, make sure you will practice your presentation with them.

3. Be Confident in Your Research Work:

Not knowing your topic “Production Of Mosquitoe Repellants Insecticides (Mosquito Coil) Using Orange Peels (Cestrum)” inside out will cause you to struggle and ultimately fail with your defense. You need to know the subject from every angle to ensure you are fully prepared for any question that may come your way.

4. Conclusion:

Reinforce your findings to conclude your defense. The finale of your presentation should focus on proving the work that has been done. You may need to recap on what has changed and remained unchanged, if is necessary.

5 . Listen:

Before you get defensive or recite a particular answer, make sure you truly understand the question being asked. Being a good listener is an important quality, because providing an inaccurate or off-topic answer will also weaken the validity of your paper.
