Problem Of Extended Family System On The Academic Performance Of Students In Some Selected Secondary Schools

Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating the problems of extended family system and how it affects student’s performance in secondary schools. It is believed that the study will help families to know the implications of not making peace among themselves and caring for their children. The method for collecting data was the questionnaire method; the respondents were randomly sampled from different secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The fully completed questionnaires were analysed from the responses given by students and families who derive much benefit from this study. By the end, the researcher recommended that this research topic be carried out by other researchers to suggest other ways of eliminating the problems of extended family system in our society.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Students performance in secondary schools over the years, have not been very encouraging. This has been giving the government and parents a lot of causes for concern. Some analysts have likened the cause for concern of this problem to the incessant strike action embarked upon by teachers as a result of irregular payment of salaries. Others attribute it to lack of seriousness on the part of the students. These facts may not be far from the truth. The analysis however, cannot be said to be thorough without researching on student’s family background which goes a long way to affect their performance in school. This is what the study intends to make a research on. To spread the scope and concept of family and extended family system and its impacts on secondary school students performance in school. in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State the effects of extended family system on students performance has been prevalent, the performance of students from extended family has not been too impressive and since the system is practiced in Nigeria and Africa in general students cannot do without socializing with other family members.

According to Humbling and Matters (1976), “Hunanbings are basically social creatures created by society primarily through family’s influence” society creates the individual; the individual does not create the society. Therefore, in the local government man is allowed two or more wives and this is known as polygamy. Polygamy has constituted academic problems to students. Finally, extended family system has some positive impacts on students since it is the commonest family unit in the society. Members who are financially buoyant assist students who are related to them thereby enabling them to meet some of their needs in school. Against, this background, extended family system is one of the numerous traditional practices which western civilization has not been able to erase in the local government and it may be with us for a long time even in the presence of western threat.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In this research attempt will be made to look at the problems students face in some secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State as a result of extended family system. The study will also include some suggestions which can help to improve on their performance in school.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The aim of this study is to analyze the problems associated with extended family system in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. And to highlight some factors that gave rise to the system. The study also aims at giving recognition to families as the center of the society and how the family also influences student’s performances in school.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The poor performances of students in school are as a result of extended family system. Therefore is important to study these problems so that the researcher will be in a better position to give appropriate advice to people concerned.

This study will be of importance to social studies teachers as they would in the position to act as counsellors to the students. This work will make parents to be aware of various factors responsible for student’s poor performance in school. Nevertheless, parents have always blamed poor student’s academic attainment on laxity and lack of interest on the part of the teacher.

1.5 Scope of the Study

In this study, I have limited myself to some secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. This is due to time factor, financial constraints and transportation problems.

1.6 Hypothesis

The following hypotheses are to be tested in this research.

• Extended family system has a significant impact on student’s performance in secondary schools.
• Students who put their family problems behind them in their school work performance better academically
• The low performance of students in secondary schools is associated with extended family system.
• When students are emotionally unstable, it affects their performance in school?

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

5.1 Summary

The family is a group of individuals who are related biologically and it is under two groups. The nuclear and the extended family which is under survey, is identified by different authors from various perspectives. To Otite and Ogionwo (2001) and extended family consist of two or more nuclear families. Chapter one disclosed the problems of extended family system and discovered that it contributes seriously to the poor performance of students in secondary schools and due to the fact that it is still practiced in Africa in general and Nigeria in particular up to date. It is one among the various traditional practices which western civilization has not been able to put an end to in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. it is possible to be with us for a long time even in the presence of western civilization.

In chapter two, we reviewed literature on the study Rosser (2001) sees extended family as any persisted kinship grouping of persons related by descent marriage or adoption, which is wider than the nuclear family, in that it characteristically spans three generations from grandparents to children. We also looked at the caused for the search of a male child or male children. It arises as a result of the circumstances of the industrial revolution, more or less as a form of social insurance, as a mechanism of protection against all kinds of misfortune at work and during unemployment. The extended family system has major problems, which include socio-economic problems. This is as a result of lack of sufficient fund to cater adequately for every member of the family. The large number of this family unit, leads to the inability to provide sufficient financial assistance, under such situation, en have poor academic performance dropout from school and others are inevitable. Chapter three, discusses the techniques of data collection which was through the use of questionnaires. The population and sample of study revealing the number of schools under which the survey was carried and how the questionnaires were administered was highlighted.

In chapter four, the analysis of data was done and in the course of doing this, hypothesis two three and four were tested and found to be false, true and true respectively. And in chapter five, recommendations on how the government, teachers and parents concerned could improve students’ performance in school were also made. More also, the researcher discovered from investigation that the family system has some importance on the people since it has been identified as the commonest family unit in our society. In conclusion, the extended family system is very common in our society; parents should therefore have less number of children, that is the ones they can sufficiently carter for.

Finally, extended family members who have the mean should assists students who are related to them so as to maintain that family tie. On the part of the students there should be seriousness to ensure that money on the their education is not wasted.

5.2 Recommendations

After a thorough investigation on the problems of extended family on the performance of students in Oredo Local Government Area, the researcher recommends that;

1. Parents should be aware that their proper caring has to play an important role in the performance of their children in school.
2. People in the area of study should practice less polygamy because it leads to extended family.
3. Government should award scholarship to intelligent students who are unable to go further with their education due to lack of finance.
4. Education should be free at all levels in Edo State which was introduced at one time to ensure that its objectives are realized.
5. Guidance and counselling should be introduced in secondary schools to counsel students who have emotional problems
6. Those that are financially buoyant in the extended family assist students who are related to them to enable them cope with the economic situation which is common in the country.
7. The investigation of students family background should be encouraged by teachers in order that t hey might be able to render help to those who need it.
8. It is honest belief that these recommendations when given proper consideration would go a long way in correcting the negative effects of extended family system on academic performance of children not only in Oredo Local Government Area but also in Edo State and in Nigeria at large.
