The Perceived Effect Of Social Media On Writing Skills Of Senior Secondary School

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school using some selected senior secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a case study. The study was set to find out the extent of social media usage among secondary school students, ascertain whether the use of social media improves the writing skill of secondary school students, find out whether the use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing, and determine the effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of students of some selected senior secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the extent of social media usage among secondary school students is high. The result of the findings reveals that the effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students includes: confusion of correct spelling, contraction of words, low performance in writing, and constant use of abbreviations. Therefore, it is recommended that school administrators need to provide the chances for students to use and be exposed in different social media platforms having the opportunity to use gadgets being provided by the Department of Education if parents/families of students cannot provide their children this exposure that will be a helpful way in the students’ learning and academic achievement since social media platforms significantly influence their writing skills. To mention but a few.

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Technology has moved human civilization forward in the last two decades more than it has in the previous two centuries, particularly with the introduction of the Internet and Information and Telecommunication Technologies (ICT) (Adnan et al., 2021). Social media is a web-based platform which facilitates the sharing of ideas, experiences, and information with the community through an online platform. Individuals can build groups on the internet using social media platforms, which allows information exchange and new friendships (Ramazanoğlu, 2020). Social media networks such Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram are the largest social media networks that has been used widely by people all around the world. Over the last few decades, social media has been the most essential communication medium in the community. According to a Pew Research Center study from 2015, 76 % of teenagers use social media, and 71 % of them are seen to be using more than one platform in social media (Lenhart, 2015). This illustrates that teenagers are the largest community of social media users. Teenagers utilize these platforms to communicate with their friends, keep up with their favourite celebrities or sports figures, and take part in conversations that they find important. We can’t deny the fact that social media is the best web-based entertainment platform.

However, it has been observed that social media does impact students’ academic performances. In view of that fact, social media have had a huge impact on how students interact with information outside of the classroom. Social media also has shown an impact on the educational environment by contributing to a changing notion of literacy. Many university students in Nigeria struggle with English writing (Karim et al., 2020).

According to Ramazanoğlu (2020), a total of 794 secondary school students took part in a survey, and are more likely to develop internet addiction than those who connect from home. In addition, the usage of social media also impacts the students’ writing skills especially in the English language in terms of usage of short form words, bilingual word choices and grammar. The main purpose of this study is to determine the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The English language is known as a worldwide language. Therefore, acquisition and learning the English skills are essential in this 21st century. One of the objectives of the Nigerian Education Blueprint 2013-2025 (NEB) is to develop skilled persons who can operate effectively in a worldwide economy where English is the international language of communication (Tahir et al., 2021). According to Yamat et al. (2014), a lack of English language proficiency among Nigerian students has always been a barrier to academic performance and job search efforts. Many Nigerian students, according to Naginder (2006) and Jalaludin and Bakar (2008), do not achieve reasonable English Language literacy despite learning English in school for 11 years. The writing skill is one of the most important skills which should be mastered by the second language learners in Nigeria. According to Lim (2013), the value of writing extends beyond the classroom context, as writing is more than just a portion of a standardized test.

The usage of social media is also one of the major factors for poor writing skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. Nigerian secondary school students tend to fail to master the writing skill due the influence of social media. The main goal of this study is to examinethe perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school. This study would enable to create an awareness on the usage of social media and its impact on English writing among the senior secondary school students.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school.

Specific objectives of the study include:

1. Find out the extent of social media usage among secondary school students.
2. Ascertain whether the use of social media improves the writing skill of secondary school students.
3. Find out whether the use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing.
4. Determine the effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following are some of the questions which this study intends to answer:

1. What is the extent of social media usage among secondary school students?
2. Does the use of social media improves the writing skill of secondary school students?
3. Does the use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing?
4. What are the effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students?

1.5. Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were formulated and tested in this study:

• Ho: The use of social media does not affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing.
• Ha: The use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing.

1.6. Significance of the Study

The significance of this study cannot be overemphasized, especially now that the society is worried about the rate of failure among students in English language, especially in WAEC and NECO examinations. This study will be of benefit to the teachers, parents, government and the students as well.

The study will be of benefit to the teachers in such a way that they will come to know that excessive use of social media has negative consequences on the students performance in writing, therefore, they will take up measures to curtail or control students’ use of it at the detriment of their academics.

There is time for everything; therefore the parents will get to know that gadgets like ipads, smartphones, etc are not a must for the students at the secondary school level. They will come to realize that such gadgets are time-consuming; as such they will ensure their children are using such items for academics.

Government is one of the major stakeholders in education. As such, the government will get to know the negative aspect of social media on the writing performance of who are in secondary schools. Therefore, they will inculcate in the curriculum important aspects that will need the students to go on research using the internet which will have a positive contribution on their academic. This will stop them from spending more time on social media doing what will not benefit them academically.

To the students, they will learn to concentrate in the classrooms when lessons are going on, instead of spending all their time on the social media making friends and chatting idly, they will use it for academics purposes.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study examined the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school. The study is delimited to selected senior secondary schools in n Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

1.8 Limitation of Study

Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint was the scanty literature on the subject owing that it is a new discourse thus the researcher incurred more financial expenses and much time was required in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size covering only secondary school in Enugu education zone. Thus findings of this study cannot be used for generalization for other secondary schools in other states within Nigeria. Additionally, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work will impede maximum devotion to the research. Howbeit, despite the constraint encountered during the research, all factors were downplayed in other to give the best and make the research successful.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Social Media

Users construct online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content through modes of electronic communication such as websites for social networking and microblogging (Manning, Jimmie, 2014).

Writing Skills

Writing abilities are special qualities that enable writers to transform their thoughts into meaningful words and psychologically interact with the message (Harmer, 2007:33).

1.10 Organization of the Studies

The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school using some selected senior secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was to examine the perceived effect of social media on writing skills of senior secondary school using some selected senior secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a case study. The study was specifically set to find out the extent of social media usage among secondary school students, ascertain whether the use of social media improves the writing skill of secondary school students, find out whether the use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing, and determine the effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 150 responses were validated from the enrolled participants, where all respondent arestudents of some selected senior secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion.

1. The extent of social media usage among secondary school students is high.
2. The use of social media improves the writing skill of secondary school students.
3. The use of social media affects students spelling and grammatical prowess in formal writing.
4. The effect of regular social usage on the writing skills of secondary school students includes: confusion of correct spelling, contraction of words, low performance in writing, and constant use of abbreviations.

5.4 Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are proffered.

1. School administrators need to provide the chances for students to use and be exposed in different social media platforms having the opportunity to use gadgets being provided by the Department of Education if parents/families of students cannot provide their children this exposure that will be a helpful way in the students’ learning and academic achievement since social media platforms significantly influence their writing skills.
2. The issues of banning the use of mobile devices in secondary school’s environment needs to be revisited.
3. Government should provide an avenue to utilize the social media platforms for teaching and learning
4. Students should be engaged in meaningful chatting, interaction, discussion, coordination, planning, writing composition, revision and, correction through Facebook.
