Parental Influence On Career Choice Among Vocational Education Students In Yaba College Of Technology (Daniel)
Abstract
The study was carried out to identify the effects of parental influence on career choice among vocational education students in Yaba college of technology. A student population of 50 student drawn from vocational education students in Yaba college of technology randomly selected was used for the study to each student questionnaire was administered and answer offered were collated and analysed. The result obtained from the study show that, illiterate parents have little or no time to their children’s education children from educated home background show more interest in education lack of motivation and parents forcing them to do their will. It was also found out that only few students are interested in their parent’s occupation. Discoveries from the study reveals that illiterate parents have no interest in their children academic growth, parents are not a factor influencing the choice of career among their children. Furthermore, there is no significant different between children from educated home towards Education of given the necessary motivation. This is due to the fact that a consideration number of children live without parental support, as in orphans, children living in the streets, displaced and refused children who on account of the poverty of their parents are subjected to inhuman and sadistic ordeals. This reduces their desire to learn as it happens frequently in Lagos State.

Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
One of the most important functions of education in our society today is to assist the learners make different career choices including subject selection by the students that will match their individual interest, abilities, personalities etc. needed to their development.Career is an activity, profession or occupation and others constituting a life style expressed in time, energy and activity (Oladele, 2002). It simply refers to a type work or way of life that an individual believes he or she is specially suited for.
It is a known fact that most young students have challenges of selecting subject at the secondary schools. The senior secondary education (SSS) represents the third stage in the current educational system known as 6-3-3-4. This system of education that was designed by the National Policy on Education exposes the learners to as many disciplines as possible in the junior secondary school (J.S.S.) and then allows them to make choices of subjects in the senior secondary school levels (SSS).
Making choices from such array of options becomes a herculean task to the students. It is one of the many important choices students will make in determining their future plans and this decision will impact them throughout their lives. The choice determines satisfaction one expects to get from his work and the opportunities he has for promotion and advancement. Individual social status, income, life style, choice of friends, mental and physical health is influenced by the type of work he or she does. In other words a person’s vocational choice or preference plays an important role in his entire life. It has been observed by researchers that most student have insufficient information about different jobs, courses of study and other activities. They are thus unable to judge whether their choices are reasonable. Without detailed and adequate information about occupations, students many jump blindly into jobs to become frustrated and unhappy later in life and perhaps at such times when a retreat would no longer be easy or possible (Omeje, 2007).
In terms of career and subjects selection, Okeke (2000) posits that parents and guardians have a significant effect on their children, that parents’ characteristics played a vital role in students’ choice of technical subjects. Parents have a crucial task of preparing their children for education. In their task of career guidance, Mabunda (2002) stated that parents have a greater influence on the child’s development and future career choices. On the other hand, parent might be forced to compel their adolescents children to choose career to please them. Thus it is upon the premise that this study is set to examine parental influence on career choice of adolescence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Adolescent students are expected to choose their careers in the senior secondary school. More often than not they 8 rush to their parents for guidance as to which subject and career to choose. In some other cases, they resort to careers that they heard of even when they do not have the potentials for such careers. Parents and Guardians are bequeathed by the virtue of their authority to train, direct and guide their children or wards in other to obtain or acquire religious, psychological, social, moral and educational values.The gap here is: How possible would this injunction be if the students are compelled by their parents to take up subjects that will direct their interests towards their parents aspirations, to the detriment of the children’s interest in their own desired field. Do parents today give adequate interest and attention to the aptitudes, mental capabilities, interest, resources and limitations of their children or wards before suggestive impressions are made on their children? This impression by parents may influence the child positively if the child can adapt to it, but adversely when such a child has different desires or goals as his priority. Some parents go by this injunction to influence their children choice of subject in secondary schools. Some threaten not to be involved in the educational pursuit of their children or wards if their choice of subject does not meet up with their personal interests. Consequently such students may be negatively or positively affected by this. Thus it is against the backdrop that this study seek to examine parental influence on career choice of a child.
1.3. Objective of the Study
The main purpose of this study is the attempt to find out the following: Specifically, the
study seeks to find out
- The what extent the level of parents education and professional background influence the career choice of students.
- The extent to which parents’ socio-economic status affects their children career choice
- The extent to which student’s choice of career are influenced by the occupational preferences of their parents.
- How parents cultural background and environmental factors influence students choice of career.
1.4 Research Questions
The research questions which the study attempts to verify are as follows:
- To what extent do parents level of education and professional background influence students’ choice of career?
- To what extent does parents’ socio-economic status influence the career choice of secondary school students?
- To what extent does parents’ occupational preference affect the students choice of career?
- To what extent does parents’ cultural background and environmental factors influence career choice of student?
1.5 Hypothesis
- Ho: there is no significant relationship between Parental Influence and Career Choice among Vocational Education Students in Yaba College of Technology.
- Ha: there is a significant relationship between Parental Influence and Career Choice among Vocational Education Students in Yaba College of Technology.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of the study will be useful to students, teachers, parents, government and guidance counselors.This study will specifically be of importance to students in making adequate choice of a life career.it will provide an awareness about fringe benefits, advancement/improvement opportunities which the adolescents required for effective and realistic career decision.Findings of this study will help the teachers create class projects that require students to research a selected occupation and apply the course content to that particular occupation. This will enable the teachers to sort and place students according to their subject inclinations and occupational class. This will provide better orientation, facilitate learning and growth, and enhance career decision than multiple interest groups. Moreover, the findings of this study will be of immense benefit to parents. It will help to guide and counsel parents on matters relating to the choice of vocation for their children and wards. The study will serve as a reference material for student and researchers who seeks to conduct futher research on related field of study
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of the study borders on parental influence on career choice of their child. The study is however delimited to Anambra State.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
During the course of this research, the following factors are proposed to be a limitation.
Financial Constraints:
Financial constraints tend to impede the researcher’s efficiency in locating relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview).
Time Constraint:
The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research is reduced.
1.9 Definition of Term
Career Choice:
Career choice is the selection of a vocation, usually on the basis of such factors as parental guidance, vocational guidance,identification with admired figures, trial or part-time jobs, training opportunities, personal interests, and ability tests.
Parental Influence:
Parental influence is defined as any opinion, attitude, or action exhibited by a parent to a child (other than direct tutoring) that somehow shapes or molds the child’s attitudes, actions and inaction.
1.10 Organization of the Study
This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows.
- Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
- Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
- Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
- Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
- Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study.

5.1 Summary of the Study
The study is aimed at finding the effect of parental influence on career choice among vocational education students in Yaba college of technology, Lagos State. In the course of study five operational research were postulated and tested. The instrument used were the student’s questionnaire (SQ) the statement provided in the questionnaire were such that require the respondents to take a stand on two point option of Yes and No.
The respondents were randomly chosen to which 50 vocational education studentsl responded. Also responded to the question were 20 parents from the area chosen for the work. They were mainly illiterate, thus the researcher has to administer the questionnaire orally in from of interview.
The respondents were vocational education students the mean score of the result collected were used.The percentage was taken from both sub-group for comparison and easy verification.
5.2 Conclusion
From the findings it can be concluded that the effects of the parental influence on the child are both negative and positive. This include lack of proper counselling, unwillingness to reason with the child, students uncooperative stand, illiteracy etc. the researcher has verified the various findings and come to a conclusion that if the problem mentioned above are solved the students will have a sustaining interest towards a better life span career.
5.3 Recommendation
As stated earlier, the effect of the parental influence on the choice of career are either positive or negative to the degree of the guidance and counselling attitude and ability of the parent toward their children the effect may have psychological socio-economic and culture effect on the child.
Recommendation of the Student
Most of us have at time made unwise decision simply because were neglect to listen to advice of others. Some decision will have significant consequences. Therefore try to determine ahead of time what these will be beware of letting the appeal of short team benefit blind you to possibly undesirable long-time consequences. ( Awake October 15th 2003—4)
Let not the undaunted effort of being the sole proponent of a self will take over you, as the bible book of proverb would say. ‘ A wise child makes the father glad’ (Proverbs 10:1) many students development apathy towards science subject due to negative report from senior students most parents may desire their children to venture into science-based career. This results is mass failure. Students should their listen to their parents and give them there strong side as well as their weak side.
Recommendation to the Parent
To the parent, there is my recommendation the issue of choice is not an easy task so much thinking, much homework, home tutorial etc should be done in order to lead the student on the right path the first thing parents should do is arouse the students interest towards a better choice of career. Since no two situations are exactly alike, two people may not always make an identical decision when facing similar problems. Still it is helpful to hear how others. Ask them how they evaluate their decision and what they think will be the benefit of their choice (Awake October 15 2003) The parent should be appreciative for some good though of their children by giving words of encouragement of some better achievement were attain as well as not condemning them, bear with them when they do something wrong especially as it involves future plan.
The students should be allowed to contribute to the subject as it involves the choice of career, this will give the students opportunities of discovering for themselves new truth, new methods of tracking problems etc. (Eborieme 1980) as it appears always in the present economic realities slide them to short term or quick money spinning career.
Recommendation of the School Administration
On investigation it was found out that there were no school counsellor in the school visited to guide the students on the choice of career as well as how or what subject the students should read for a specified choice of career.
The national policy on Education (FGN), Lagos 1998) envisage the appointment of at least a guidance and counsellor in all trial of our Education system (primary, secondary and higher institutions) The school administration should organise an occasional excursion tour of some private and public co-operation for the students. Organise regular meeting for the parent teacher association to discuss the issue of lack of infrastructures for training the students.
Our educational institution are in a state of crisis and total collapse as a result of incessant strike action by teachers due to non payment of salaries and fringe benefits, non availability of instructional facilities etc which affect the students always thereby affecting directly or indirectly the change of a better choice of career (Eduwen 2003).
The school administration should see to it that teachers are employed to man the core subjects and other subject.
Teaching aid should be made available and at a lower rate so that the student should be able to afford them.
Recommednation to Further Researchers
Solving the problems of the choice of career among students is a continuous process especially now that the rate of unemployment is increasing the need for students to have plausible attitude towards better and life span career require a careful and continuous study.
Thus the researcher suggests that seminars work should be carried out in other local government area on:
- The factors affecting the choice of career among students.
- The importance of career choice in personal development.
- The Problem and prospect of parental influence on the choice of career among secondary school students.
- The work should be done in a wide scale to help solve the parental problem of wrong choice of career among school children.
