The Negative Effects Of Pornographic Films And Magazines On The Nigerian Youths (A Case Study Of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede)

The primary focus of this project is to expose the ills and negative effects of pornographic films and magazines on youths using Federal Polytechnic Nekede as a case study. Survey method was adopted for the analysis of data and the instrument employed was the questionnaire method. After analyzing the data, the findings revealed that pornography is indeed cancerous and is eating deep into the moral lives of youths causing a mirage of excesses on campus.

The researchers recommends that all hands should De on deck for the eradication of pornographic materials in our society or better still the government together with individual families and the society at large should set up campaigns for youths on sexual education to avoid them having secret knowledge of it to their own detriment as we all know that today’s youths are tomorrow’s leaders.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background Of Study

The impact of electronic technology as a life wire for development in the 21st century cannot be overemphasized. Infact, life has become easier with the introduction of information technology to all aspects of human endeavours. Pornography is one aspect of the modern electronic mass media content that has been given little or no attention by the society. Some sections of the society have chosen to regard pornography as part of the normal trend of life while very few have come out to challenge the trend and expose its disastrous effects.

This research will examine these trends with a view to identifying the effects and proffer solution. Pornography has been defined as an act of showing naked people or acts that

arouse sexual excitement. Pornography comes in different ways or forms like blue films, video games, comic books like Hints, Ikebe super, Fantasy, Hearts, Better Lovers, Tickles and Hot fun etc.

Vendors of magazines even confirm that orders are made prior to the publication period to avoid scarcity. They claim that the way they are being patronized results in their continued stay in the business. It has also been confirmed from them that they cannot match the supply of pornographic materials with its demand. This can only confirm the fear that the rush for these materials is assuming the trend of life in our contemporary society.

1.2 Statement Of Problems

The problem of pornography is wider in scope even more than the ordinary world. Many things happening around can be attributed to it. It was reported that some young Nigerian ladies were deported from Italy due to engagement in prostitution. If this was a result of pornography then to what extent has pornography

contributed to youth sexual progress and how can we then checkmate this hydra-headed problem?
The research will try to tackle this problem by breaking it down into the following problems

  1. Does pornography contribute to youth’s sexual promiscuity?
  2. Is it posing a serious threat to the morals of youths in the society?
  3. Is it affecting this local culture and causing an identity problem?
  4. Is the government doing enough to combat this trends

This is the fulcrum around which this project revolves.

1.3 Research Objectives

This research study is aimed at achieving the following objectives;

  1. To find out the reaction of parents towards watching of blue films and erotic magazines by youths
  2. To find out if pornography is in existence
  3. To find out the causes of the existence of pornography
  4. To assess the extent of its impact on the Nigerian youths

1.4 Purpose Of Study

To find out if pornographic films are rendering most of our youths into sexual acts and violence, for instance, in our higher institutions of learning, we witness thousand cases of sexual harassment, rape, premarital sex etc. in our homes, many close relations indulge in sexual immorality, siblings committing incest, our young girls who view imported blue films from Italy and other foreign countries resort to traveling abroad to practice same, resulting to abortion, unwanted pregnancies and masturbation.

Sequel to the above observations, the researcher decided to carryout a study on “The negative effect of pornographic films and magazine on Nigerian youths”.

1.5 Significance

The outcome of this work will be useful as it will expose the harmful effects of indulgence to pornography in the society. It will provide a good backing for film censoring now that the clamour for privatization of different aspects of the electronic media has been achieved.

Similarly, for the meaningful legislation on issues of pornography it is important now that the country is working very hard to redeem her image internationally.

1.6 Limitation Of The Study

The general applicability of the study findings are as follows;

Time is a major factor in data collection and other relevant information for use,

Also physical energy was applied because research work is a tedious work and most a times you get worked up in the process.

The materials that will enable the researchers get the work done must be readily available else, it becomes difficult to carry an effective study. Hence, the materials needed to carryout an effective research posed another barrier, thus making the researchers to embark on a thorough research to come up with a substantial material, this was another limitation to the study.

Lastly, finance is another problem. You have to subscribe to the internet, browse the web, buy books and journals and put the data together.

Because of these limitations, the researcher had to concentrate in a particular group to narrow down this work.

1.7 Delimitation / Study

This work was delimited for reasons of feasibility to the study of attitude of youths ranging from ages 16-27. Also it deals with only films and magazines among the multifarious sources of pornographic materials.

Chapter Five

Summary, Conclusion, Recommendation And Suggestions For Further Studies

This chapter discusses the major findings of the study in relation to the stated objective. It also makes conclusion from the findings, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.

5.1 Summary. Discussion Of Findings Objective One: Personal Data

The first objective of this study is to find out whether pornography is in existence. A total of 200 respondents between the ages of 16-21 and 22-30 from Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri were used for this study. The majority of the respondents were within the ages range of 16-21 years 107 (53.3%) and 22-30 years 93 (46.7%). Among respondents, females were 147 (&3.3%) while males were 53 (26.7%).

The respondents had formal education proportionally. 100 (50%) had OND qualification while 100(50%) HND qualification. This depicts the reason why pornographic films and magazines exist since the target population can read and watch with understanding. The respondents are all Christians and students. The result from table 4 showed that 160 (80%) students watch pornographic films and read erotic magazines while 40 (20%) do not. It could be said that pornography is in existence because majority of our students watch pornographic films and read pornographic magazines. On the views about the existence of pornography, majority of the respondents (67 33.3%) opines that it attract patronage, 60 (30%) said it increases income of producers 40 (20%0 believes it is educative, 30 (15%) gave the above reason as their views about the existence of pornography while 3 (1.7%) had no idea.

Pornography is said to be in existence because of the high patronage by users, income generation of producers and educative value accrued to the users.

The second objectives in this study are to determine why youths watch pornographic films and read erotic
magazines. The result from the questions answering this objectives showed that 133 (66.7%) are of the view that youth watch pornographic films and magazines as comic and entertaining, 17(3.3%) see it as being educative and 13 (6.7%) see it as being sexy. It could be deduced that most of our youths watch and read pornographic films and magazines as it educates them feel sexy. Niel. Malanuth (1972) in his study on the effects of pornography on the society observed that in a healthy culture where people are awialed of sex education and sound family background violent pornography will not influence them like in a culture where sex education is considered a taboo. Objective three

The third objective is to ascertain why the youths derive satisfaction from watching pornographic films and reading erotic magazines despite that a great number of 180 (90%) of our youths derive satisfaction while 20(10%) do not. It has been observed that it is the satisfaction they derive that hypnotize them into watching and reading pornographic films and magazines despite its moral decadence.

In figure 1 which is the reasons why they derive satisfaction, a good number of the respondents, 1209 (66.7%) believes that it keeps one busy, 27 (14.8%) believes that it keeps one busy, 27 (14.8%) believes that it is sexy, 23(12.9%) derive satisfaction because it is their hobby while 10 (5.6%) could not give reasons for which they derive satisfaction. It could be deduced that those it makes feel sexy pout what they read and see into practice. This could be the reason for the continuity of pornography and why youths are affected mostly.

Objective four

This objective is to find out awareness of parent, guidance with regards to youths watching pornographic films and reading pornographic magazines. In table 8 results indicates that 120 (60.90) of parents are not ware that their youths watch and read pornographic films and magazines while 80 (40%) of parents are aware.

This shows that most youth know that pornography is bad that is why they hide from their parents while watching pornographic films and reading erotic magazines. Figure 2 shows that out of 200 respondents, the majority of 133 (66.7%) are bothered, 47 (23.3%) do not bother while 20 (10%) had no idea of their reactions. This shows tat most parents are not in support of the youths’ exposure to nay form of pornography.

This identified the effects of pornographic films and magazines on youths. Table 9 shows that respondents have negative effects of pornographic films and magazines as it brings about poor academic performance, 53 (26.7%) followed by rape / prostitution 40(20%), 34(16/7%) homosexuality / lesbianism, 27(13.3%) said that it leads to violence and 10(5%) said that it leads to unwanted pregnancies. This shows that pornography are though enjoyed by youths still affects them adversely. Table 10 shows that 93 (46.7%) are of the view that it educate them
sexually, 67 (33.3%) derive pleasure while 40 (20%0 receive productive education through it.

The two tables 9 and 10 shows that the negative effects of exposure to pornography is more on youths than the positive effects while youths says it offer them sex education and teaches them about family life. Amatokun, (1905). On the negative effects of pornography has the opinion that “some crude but meaningful observations revealed that a person that is exposed to sexually explicit materials may be tempted to want to seek a way of determining the pleasurable levels of that particular sexual variety

Kaupuan (1987:30) argues contrarily believing that people who watch pornographic films and read pornographic materials are les likely to become sexual offenders than those who abstain from it. “Wohl (1989:20) in his study on pornography and its effects is not surprised that incident of unwanted pregnancies and its offshoot abortion especially among teenagers have increased geometrically over the years because “pornography like sewage bleeds into every thing it touches”.

5.2 Conclusion

A lot of researchers have carried out studies on the effects of pornographic films and magazines on youths and have concluded that it has negative and positive effects on them. The result drawn from the findings have shown or concluded that majority of our youths watch pornographic films and read pornographic magazines.

The majority of our youths said pornography is in existence because of its educational value and for the fact that it attracts patronage and increases the income of producers. It has also been found out that our youths who watch and read pornographic films and magazines do it because it educate them sexually, entertains them and makes them feel sexy. However, it was drawn that many of our youths derive satisfaction while few do not.

Finally, it was recommended that the numbers of parents that are not aware of their youths’ exposure to
pornography are greater than those who know. It is equally known that greater numbers of parents who bother are more than those who do not bother.

5.3 Recommendations

The researcher recommends those parents who are not bothered should work hard to assist in youth training by enforcing national laws guiding children.

Pornography need to be eliminated as results have shown that it has more harmful negative effects on our youths than the positive effects. What should be done is that government should declare outright ban on importation of films and materials that are pornographic through any legal means into the country.

The researcher is of the view that campaign on sexual education of the youths should be encouraged to avoid them having secret knowledge of sex to their own detriment.

5.4 Suggestions For Further Study

A more elaborate research should be undertaken to know more on the effects of pornographic films and magazines on Nigerian youths. Perhaps such an elaborate work may yield a different or similar result form the current study
Such studies should be undertaken in bigger towns or cities in Nigeria as the findings could be of significance to educate youths on the effect of pornography and probably curb it. Studies should be conducted on exposure to pornographic media and teenagers’ sexual orientation
