Mobile Computing Location Management System


Mobile computing is one of the most widely used technologies in today’s society. It is used in a variety of fields such as computer science, information technology, and telecommunications. Mobile computing has been widely used in various fields of life such as business, education, medicine, and so on. In this paper, we present a dynamic location management strategy that has the following features: (i) static location management strategies for identification of user, (ii) update the user location in location sever based on a hierarchical free structure database. The results of the analyzed data show that 100% of the sample identified that mobile computing location management is very important in an economy, poverty, state and even in rural areas. Result from the data collected, presented and interpreted it shows that majority of the respondents choose the easier and quicker means of mobile computing position management so that flexibility can be extended to rural areas where people wont see it as a burden or as stress to operate and find somebody location. The location management scheme imposes low computations, communication and storage overheads, moreover, mobile hosts and the wireless links do not incur any of these overheads which is desirable feature as they are usually resources poor.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

Managing location information of mobile nodes is an important issue in mobile computing system. Location management is one of the important issues in cellular network. It deals with how to track subscribers on the move and how to update his or her movement. In mobile communication environment, they are going to accommodate more subscribers; the size of cell must be reduced to make more efficient use of the limited frequency spectrum allocation. This will add to the challenge of some fundamental issues in cellular networks. Location management consists of updating the location and performing search-update. Various strategies can discuss in this project for the efficient performance of updating, searching and search-updating strategies throughout the execution.

1.1 Background of the Study

The fascinating word of mobile company has only been around since the 1990s. Since then, devices that have been developed for mobile computing have taken of the wireless industry.

This new type of communication is a very powerful tool for both personal business and personal use. Mobile computing is defined as the ability to use technology that is not physically connected to any static network. This actually used to mean radio transmitters that operated on a stable base, usually with help of large antennas. Radios used by police officers were also considered mobile technology but now, it means people can connect wirelessly to the internet or to a private network almost anywhere.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Mobile computing location management is faced with numerous technical problems which are narrowed down into three (3) by researcher. The major difficulty the researcher confronts during his guest to enquire more about mobile computing location management includes:

  1. Mobile elements are resource-poor relative to static element for a given cost and level of technology, considerations of weight power size and ergonomics will execute a penalty in computational resources such as processor speed, memory size, and disk capacity. While mobile elements will improve in absolute ability they will always be resource-poor relative to static elements.
  2. Mobile connectivity is highly variable in performance and reliability. Some building may offer reliable high band width wireless connectivity while others may only offer low-band width connectivity. Out doors, a mobile client may have to rely on a low-band with wireless network with gaps in courage.
  3. Mobile elements rely on a finite energy source. While battery technology will undoubtedly improve over time. The need to be a sensitive to power consumption must span many levels of hard ware and software to be fully effective.

These limitations are not at facts of current technologies, but are intrinsic mobility. Together, they complicate the design of mobile information systems and require us to rethink traditional approaches to information access.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The objective is to develop system and application level software for small battery powered terminals equipped with the wireless network connection.

There is a rapidly growing interest in the field of mobile computing with companies spending Billions of Dollars developing technology and buying spectrum to their target market users.

1.4 Research Question for Hypothesis

  1. When should the location directory be updated?
  2. How should the location information be distributed amongst servers?
  3. Should the location management directory be maintained at a centralized site or should it be distributed?
  4. How important is mobile computing location management in our environment?

1.5 Significance of the Study

Significant of the study is an important issue in the design of mobile computing system is how to manage the location information of mobile clients

1.6 Scope of the Study

To provide comprehensive market assessment of mobile computing and sectors growth potential through 2011. Cover devices such as computers, notebooks, tablet PCs, handhelds, smart phones, and all other mobile devices. Analysis includes market for chipsets and internal processors, operating systems, application software, wireless technologies and broad band connections.

Examine the current position of mobile computing via five major platforms, within each platform, an overview of the key advantage, an analysis of market factors that will impact demand and projected shipments of mobile computing products and their value for 2005, 2006 and 2011 are presented.

Estimate the unit distribution of mobile computing activity by business and consumers, and analyzes units of each platform by application. Analysis the mobile computing industry on a world wide basis including manufacturing capability and consumption in various regions markets.

1.7 Limitation of the Study

Insufficient Bandwith:

Mobile access is generally slower than direct cable connections, using technologies such as GPRS (General Package Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data-Rates for Global Evolution), and more recently HSDPA and HSUPA 3G Networks.

These Networks are usually available within range of commercial cell phone towers. Higher speed wireless LANs are inexpensive but have very limited range.

Security standards:

When a power outlet or portable generator is not available, mobile computers most rely entirely on battery power. Combined with the compact size of many mobile devices, this often means usually expensive batteries must be used to obtain the necessary battery life.

Transmission interferences:

Weather, terrain, and the range from the nearest signal point can all interfere with signal reception. Reception in tunnels, some buildings, and rural areas are often poor.

Potential Health Hazards:

People who use mobile devices while driving are often distracted from driving and are thus assumed more likely to be involved in traffic accidents. (While this may seem obvious, there is considerable discussion about whether banning mobile device use while driving reduces accidents or not.) Cell phones may interfere with sensitive medical devices. There are allegation that cell phone signal may cause health problems.

Human interfere with devices:

Screen and key boards tends to be small, which may make them hard to use. Alternate input methods such as speech or handwriting recognition require training.

1.8 Definition of Terms

5.0 Summary, Recommendation and Conclusion

5.1 Summary

In this project work several static location management strategies for identification of user, update the user location in location sever based on a hierarchical free structure database are discussed.

Static location management uses on combination of search, update and search update strategies through out the execution, it was noticed that performing search update significant reduced aggregate costs.

5.2 Conclusion

Location management about mobile host, is replicated so, not all mobile server stations (MSSS) need to store the location of every mobile host. Mobile hosts that are query more often that others have their location information stored at a greater number of mobile services station (MSS). The set of mobile services station (MSSS) that stored a mobile host location changed dynamically as the host moves from one point of the network to another.

Also mobile services stations (MSS) that store location information of frequently queried mobile host store information about fewer hosts than the mobile service station (MSS) that only store location information of infrequently queried mobile host. As a result, the location directory is fairly distributed through out the network and no single mobile services stations (MSS) is overburdened with the responsibility of responding to location queries, the location management scheme imposes low computations, communication and storage overheads, moreover, mobile hosts and the wireless links do not incur any of these overhead, which is desirable feature as they are usually resources poor. The overheads are visible to the mobile service stations and the fixed wire line network, which are comparatively resources rich.
