Library Orientation And Undergraduate Use Of Their Libraries In Tertiary Institution In Cross River State
Abstract
This study was carried out to examine library orientation and undergraduate use of their libraries in tertiary institution in Cross River State using University of Cross River State as a case study. The study specifically was aimed to determine the extent University library of UNICROSS organize orientation for undergraduates, determine the extent the undergraduates in UNICROSS participates in the orientation, determine whether library orientation increases the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS, and ascertain the effect of library orientation on library users. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of undergraduate students of University of Cross River State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 160 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, while the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the extent the University library of UNICROSS organize orientation for undergraduates is low. The study also revealed that library orientation increase the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS. Therefore, it is recommended that it is advisable to motivate students to utilize the various resources available in the library, including but not limited to films, film tapes, disc records, abstracts, microfiche or microfilm, indexes, compact discs, audio tapes, databases, and cassettes. To mention but a few.

Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Academic library is referred to as a library that is attached to post-secondary institution which they serve. Academic library is one which is established in institutions of higher learning to support learning, teaching and research activities of the universities and colleges. More so, academic library serves the research needs of institutions they serve and it is also the responsibility of any libraries to ensure that the use of its information sources, resources and services are maximized to benefit of its users.
The Library is one of the purposeful organs of higher Institutions charged with the responsibility of acquiring, processing ,organizing all sort of information being it print or nonprint to meet the needs of the university community. The library provide information that will enhance teaching, learning and research. The university Library is mandated to ensure that library users, especially fresh students, have access to its collections in order to aid in teaching, learning, and research at the university, orientation is, in fact, one of the methods used by the University Library to introduce students to its collection and access to resources.
User orientation is day-by-day getting more relevant especially in the present context when new sources of information are available. Further more information and that too in fraction seconds, so he/she has to be orientated about not only the use of library resources ie the various sources of information, but also about the various complexities involved the success of orientation programme would depend upon planning knowledge of psychology of the users and investment of reference librarian.
Academic libraries in developing nations had developed some methods for instructing their new and current users for the effective use of such libraries (Suleiman, 2012; Madukoma, et al., 2013). These methods first start with the orientation of the students followed by a guided library tour, then provision of a library guide, and ended with classroom teaching. The influence this procedure has had on students and individuals is of great concern as the world has seen huge innovation in the proliferation of information provision and modern technologies in academic libraries. In most academic libraries, library orientation/instruction takes place every new academic year. The target group for such instructions on the use of library services and resources is the freshly admitted students into the university. Though students are taken through almost all the process of library guidelines or instructions which involves the orientation process, the library tour, the classroom teaching among others with the sole objective of providing them with enough exposure to the library services and resources to help educate and guide them to its effective use, the effectiveness of such methods of orientation and instruction on the use of library services and resources is still not known.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
All the teaching, learning and research going on in the university revolve around the library collection. Quite a lot is invested to ensure that every discipline is covered in the acquisition of information resources in the library. A well-equipped but underutilized library is as good as a storehouse and a near waste of limited financial resources. In recognition of the crucial role the university library plays in the academic programme of the university, use of the library course was designed to assist students acquire the necessary skills needed to not only access and use the library resources but to also enhance their academic performance and lifelong education.
Unfortunately, preliminary observation carried out by the researcher shows that despite the provision of library materials and user education by libraries, undergraduates’ utilization of these resources is low. This may be either that students do not really appreciate the value of the university library or its impact on their academic pursuit or that the teaching of the library orientation has not made much impact. This low usage may have resulted in poor academic performance and research output by undergraduates of Nigerian universities. However, the perception of the undergraduates on the use of library orientation as an aid to use of library resources in university libraries has not been ascertained. This study is set to examine library orientation and undergraduate use of their libraries in tertiary institution in Cross River State.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The general aim of this study is to examine library orientation and undergraduate use of their libraries in tertiary institution in Cross River State. The specific aims of this study are outlined below:
- Determine the extent University library of UNICROSS organize orientation for undergraduates?.
- Determine the extent the undergraduates in UNICROSS participates in the orientation.
- Determine whether library orientation increases the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS.
- Ascertain the effect of library orientation on library users.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the following questions;
- To what extent does the University library of UNICROSS organize orientation for undergraduates?
- To what extent did the undergraduates in UNICROSS participate in the orientation?
- Does library orientation increase the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS?
- What is the effect of library orientation on library users?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
- Ho: Library orientation does not increase the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS.
- Ha: Library orientation does increases the utilization of library resources among undergraduate students in UNICROSS.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The need for effective use of information resources in the library gave rise to user orientation which is the most effective way of helping library users to be able to find their way in the library.
This study on user orientation will help the library patron find his way in the library with ease because of the knowledge and skills provided during orientation. It will reduce the lack of or non-use and misuse of all types of information materials.
Users orientation will promote longevity of library resources, that is because users will be oriented on the proper use of all types of materials in the library. Management will save cost on replacement of misused and damaged information resources as a result of proper, usage due to user orientation.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is boarded on library orientation and undergraduate use of their libraries in tertiary institution in Cross River State. Geographically, the study will be carried in University of Cross River State.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
Moreover, the case study method utilized in the study posed some challenges to the investigator including the possibility of biases and poor judgment of issues. However, the investigator relied on respect for the general principles of procedures, justice, fairness, objectivity in observation and recording, and weighing of evidence to overcome the challenges.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Academic Library:
Academic Library is one which is established in institutions of higher learning to support learning teaching and research activities of the university and colleges
Library Resources:
