Abstract

This study was carried out to assess the knowledge of child abuse among mothers living in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area. The study specifically was aimed to assess the knowledge of mother’s on the prevalence of child abuse in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area, assess the knowledge of mother’s on the causes of child abuse in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area, and assess the knowledge of mother’s on the effect of child abuse in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of mothers resident in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State. In determining the sample size, the researcher purposefully selected 160 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses was tested Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the prevalence of child abuse in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area is high. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the causes of child abuse in Ilasamaja Community Of Mushin Local Government Area includes: parental substance abuse, poor parenting skills, high levels of community violence, and poor economic conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should design and implement extensive awareness programs targeted at mothers. These programs should focus on the signs, types, and consequences of child abuse, emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention. To mention but a few.
