An Investigative Study On The Availability And Use Of Teaching Aids In Teaching Mathematics In Primary Schools


Abstract


This study is on an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary schools. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selected primary schools in Uyo local government of Akwa Ibom state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made up headmasters, mathematics teachers, senior staff and junior staff was used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies


Chapter One


Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Instructional materials and aids are an essential requirement for successful teaching. Many teachers find that seeking and finding resources that produce results when students use them is a distinct pleasure among the multitude of teaching details. Use of teaching and learning materials activates students and as they learn actively, the teacher can enjoy the evidence of their progress.( Brown, Lewis, Richard and Harcleroad (1985)) The benefits that accrue from effective use of instructional materials abound. Instructional materials when used well make the entire teaching and learning processes complete and functional. They facilitate the understanding of difficult concepts and principles. Ideally, they make it easier for learners to follow, understand, respond to and retain content of the lesson (Gamble 1984) .At College and university, student teachers are required to learn how to make and use simple and cheap teaching aids. They are also trained to operate and use sophisticated media resources such as radios, tape recorders, overhead projectors and sometimes the computers. Kilundo (2002) observes that, it is impossible to have meaningful teaching and learning in schools in the absence of these teaching materials. Lack of teaching materials can hinder any teaching programme from operating with desired efficiency. He argues that while both experience and available literature would support the view that materials are associated with high academic achievement, there is no need just to verify, but to study the efficacy of those materials in the wider context of school quality. This study concentrated on the use textbooks and mathematical tables in the teaching mathematics. The consideration of the above instructional resources was necessitated by the fact that they are the most common and readily available in primary schools


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Complaints about lack of teaching and learning materials and available resources were hardly used (Oirere, 2008). The challenges in utilization of available resources were not investigated which was the main concern of this study. Inadequacy of instructional resources has been cited as one of the major causes of poor teaching techniques (Wasiche, 2006). Too much theoretical teaching of mathematics makes the subject to look too abstract and difficult to students. Other studies done both in mathematics and other subjects in various regions in Nigeria also found out that instructional resources were quite inadequate in many schools. The problem of inadequacy of teaching and learning resources affects the number of activities that a teacher can plan for a lesson thus limiting teachers in their efforts to vary their teaching techniques. However, Mathematics teachers have to be more creative and use locally available materials in instruction. On this background the researcher wants to investigate an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary schools


1.3 Objective of the Study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To identify types of aids resources used by teachers who teach mathematics in primary school
  2. To ascertain the professionalism of the mathematics teacher
  3. To ascertain the availability of mathematics teaching material in primary school

1.4 Research Hypotheses

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

  1. H0: there are no types of aids resources used by teachers who teach mathematics in primary school.
    H1: there are types of aids resources used by teachers who teach mathematics in primary school.
  2. H02: there is no availability of mathematics teaching material in primary school
    H2: there is availability of mathematics teaching material in primary school

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study will give a clear insight on an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary schools. The study will be beneficial to students, teachers and the ministry of education. The study will serve as a reference to other researchers that will embark on this topic


1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study covers an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary school. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

a) Availability of Research Material:

The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

b) Time:

The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) Organizational Privacy:

Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.


1.7 Definition of Terms

Availability:

The quality of being able to be used or obtained.

Teaching:

The objective is typically accomplished through either an informal or formal approach to learning, including a course of study and lesson plan that teaches skills, knowledge or thinking skills. Different ways to teach are often referred to as pedagogy.

Mathematics:

Mathematics (from Greek μάθημα máthēma, “knowledge, study, learning”) includes the study of such topics as quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek and use patterns to formulate new conjectures; they resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proof.

Primary School:

A primary school is a school in which children receive primary or elementary education from the age of about seven to twelve, coming after preschool, infant school and before secondary school

Teaching Aid:

Definition of teaching aid. : an object (such as a book, picture, or map) or device (such as a dvd or computer) used by a teacher to enhance or enliven classroom instruction audiovisual teaching aids.


1.8 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows

  1. Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
  2. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
  3. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
  4. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
  5. Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary school

In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary school


5.2 Summary

This study was on an investigative study on the availability and use of teaching aids in teaching mathematics in primary school. Three objectives were raised which included: To identify types of aids resources used by teachers who teach mathematics in primary school, to ascertain the professionalism of the mathematics teacher, to ascertain the availability of mathematics teaching material in primary school. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selected primary schools in Uyo local government of Akwa Ibom state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. 5.3 Conclusion

Resources would help to enhance the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics, if teachers who are the implementers of the curriculum engage themselves in proper utilization and improvisation material resources used in the teaching and learning of Mathematics.


5.4 Recommendation

  1. Workshop and seminars should be organized for serving Science and Mathematics teachers on improvisation and utilization of essential material resources in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics.
  2. Non-governmental organization should take it as a responsibility in funding the local production of material resources used in the teaching and learning of Science and mathematics.
  3. Science and Mathematics teachers should select the cheapest available equipment for demonstration or illustration of principles and science concepts
  4. Teachers who carry out improvisation should be rewarded and motivated adequately.
  5. Governments should take sole responsibility of supplying and procurement of necessary instructional materials and facilities, they should equally ensure high maintenance culture by the administrators
