Investigation Of The Factors That Contribute To Youth Involvement In Crime And Bribery In Nigeria

Chapter One

Background Of The Study

Every society around the globe has its unique problems and challenges. Nigeria is not an exception. As a developing world, it faces its own set of social, political, fiscal, and cultural issues, many of which have had a significant impact on the population’s well-being. Youth unemployment and a growing tide of crime are two such issues plaguing the region, all of which have significant consequences for the country’s growth. On the other hand, crime is often seen as a danger to society’s fabric or as a sign of a societal collapse. Crime is dysfunctional because it jeopardizes societal order, and it is therefore a systemic issue that necessitates a concerted attempt to pursue a long-term remedy. It undermines the social fabric by eroding the sense of safety and security (Onoge, 1988).The media, both print and electronic is awash daily with reports of crimes committed and the seeming helplessness of the law enforcement agents especially the police, in curbing the ugly and disturbing trend has made it more worrisome.

Nigeria’s crime epidemic is multifaceted and complex capable of putting the company’s existence in jeopardy, as well as efforts to achieve long-term development A variety of factors, including an escalating and unregulated crime crisis, will jeopardize Nigeria’s corporate life and growth (Tanimu, 2006). Security and crime are profoundly ingrained in Nigeria’s political culture, particularly in recent years, and have emerged as a central concept in the country’s fight for good governance, sustainable democracy, and growth.

Dambazau (1994) characterized crime as an act or omission that is harmful to the public interest. It includes four main principles: civic wrong, religious wrong, statute, and criminal punishment. It is prescribed by legislation passed by the legislature in the general interests of society, and to which prescribed punishment is applied in the event of violation. Crime is often viewed as a breach of the laws that all members of society have committed to follow and on which the majority of the society’s participants converged those that have broken the law will face repercussions. Nigeria is one of the world’s developing nations, and rising crime waves, malicious motives, and differing degrees of delinquency are all common occurrences. Armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, auto stealing, arson, bribery, and other crimes have all been recorded in Nigeria since the 1980s (Dambazau, 2007).bribery and corruption, food and drug adulteration, piracy, human trafficking, abduction, drug trafficking, money laundering, internet scams, advanced fee fraud (419), and other criminal practices are also on the rise.

Statement Of Problem

The high rate of unemployment and economic poverty in Nigeria has intensified the issue of crime, driving many jobless youths, some of whom are graduates, into multiple deadly crimes (Edward, 2011).According to Bennel (2000), urban society is becoming more criminalized, especially with the prevalence of youth gangs. Because of the repeated incidence of armed robbery incidents in Nigeria, neither homes nor markets are secured. Unemployment problem, which now seems beyond remedy, has produced army of idle hands and some of them have decided to punish the society that fails to provide them with means of livelihood and dignity by robbing its members of their property at gunpoint (Ideyi, 2005).since many Nigerians are unable to satisfy their basic needs due to lack of jobs, they resort to crime and bribery to survive.
