Abstract

This study examines the computer usage as it affects the academic performance of Abuja municipal area council’s junior secondary school students. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The study revealed that ICT facilities were lacking in Junior secondary schools. Teachers and Students exposure to ICT facilities was low. The study revealed that some of the benefits of using ICT in technical college include making teaching and learning interesting; helping teacher to be up to date in enhancing the quality of work of both teachers and students. Despite these benefits, the study revealed some of the challenges facing ICT as: irregular power supply; inadequate computer literate teachers; inadequate ICT facilities. It was therefore, recommended that the government should increase the funding of education sector to cater for ICT programme in Junior secondary schools and there should be periodic training for teachers on ICT computer skills acquisition.

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

The best approach to effect study of computer depends on the extent of the practical aspect of teaching computer. The aspect of this study has to do with the availability of computer system and their accessories. Aneke I.C. (2005). Computer system is a programmable machine which responds to a specific set of instruction in a well defined manner. It can execute a pre – recorded list of instruction ( a program). The place of computer in education, like in any fields of human endeavor, has assumed an unimaginable dimension. Today, computers are used in various ways for teaching and learning in schools at various levels. Computes can now guide a learner through a course of instructions at a video display unit in such a manner that will facilitate the understanding of subject matter. This process helps to speed up the students learning process. This practice, unlike the case of human teacher gives the opportunity to re – learn any aspect of the subject matter as many times as he/she cleans it necessary. Computer can also provide instructions to students, ask them questions (usually multiple choice question) mark the students responses, grade their performance and determine by itself whether to take the students to take the students to next level of study or repeat the previous portion of the lecture just concluded based on the students performance. This process of learning with computer aided instruction (CAI). Apart from instructional programs, computers also make a lot of impacts I provision of educational materials. Computer transform school libraries into new information service unit. Through virtual library one does not need to go from one library to another in search of library materials. With just a press of button (keys on computer keyboard) or a click on the mouse the information will be at the disposal of the intended user. According to Aneke, accessories are those devices which are useful, helpful to the operation of computer. E.g. keyboard, scanner, printers, mouse, monitors etc.

Extent through which these accessories are seen in the tab is the major aim of these studies. Unavailability of computer accessories are of the problem facing Nigerian students at AMAC in particular. In this sense that the hardly make use of the system due to non installation of these accessories in the computer. In other to maintain the of 32nd ministerial council meeting of the national council of education in 1987, which is to set-up computer study at the Junior secondary school level. These accessories must be available to an extent that is to say that installation of accessories will enhance the smooth running of programs for the betterment of the students learning. This research work will provide necessary steps to the Junior secondary schools and steps for maintenance of the available computer system and accessories.

The first body of literature explored the impact of computer uses. Since the Internet revolution, there has been a shift in the literature that focuses more on the impact of online activities: use of Internet, use of educative online platforms, digital devices, use of blogs and wikis, etc.

Looking at the link between computer usage and student achievement seems nowadays a misunderstanding of the role and nature of these technologies. In fact, since computer is general purpose technology (GPT), it needs to be specified in order to meet the needs expressed by students and to be adapted to the local context and constraints (Antonelli, 2003; Youssef, 2008). A variety of models of usages can be identified leading to the same outcome.

Computer usage brings widened possibilities for the learning processes that are independent from place and space. Computer usage also allows more flexible (asynchronous) and more personalized learning. It offers new methods of delivering subject at secondary education level. Taking advantage of these opportunities needs a profound change in the organization of the secondary education system.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The researcher wishes to find the extent of availability of computer system in Junior secondary school, in Abuja Municipal Area council by finding out of the number of computer system in the school will be enough for the student at the course of practical and the availability of the computer accessories In other to enhance effective program running in the system for the purpose of this work. The researcher has put some question to enable them set information at the course of the investigation. Computer system is the best approach to the studding of practical’s in computer education, why are there less computer system in the computer system in the computer lab of the school?

Accessories are those devices which are useful, helpful to the operation of computer, why is it that the accessories are not available in the computer lab?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The study was designed to investigate the computer usage as it affects the academic performance of Abuja municipal area council’s junior secondary school students. The major aim of this research work was :

  1. To determine the level in which computer facilities are available for teaching and learning in Abuja Municipal Area council.
  2. To determine the level teachers and students in Junior secondary schools use computer facilities in teaching-learning.
  3. To examine the relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students in Nigeria
  4. To determine the challenges facing computer facilities in Junior secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area council.

1.4 Research Questions

For the purpose of this study, the researcher has proposed the following research questions.

  1. To what level are the computer facilities available for teaching and learning in Abuja Municipal Area council Junior secondary schools?
  2. To what level does teachers and students in Junior secondary schools use computer facilities in teaching-learning ?
  3. What is the relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students in Nigeria?
  4. What are the challenges facing computer facilities in Junior secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area council ?

1.5 Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance:
