The Influence Of Parental Divorce On Children’s Emotional Wellbeing

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the influence of parental divorce on children’s emotional wellbeing using secondary school students in Kano Metropolis as case study. Specifically the study was set to assess the prevalence of parental divorce in Nigeria; ascertain the causes of parental divorce in Nigeria; assess whether there is a significant relationship parental divorce and poor emotional stability of victimized children; and assess impacts of parental divorce on children’s emotional well-being of children. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of students of some selected secondary schools in Kano Metropolis. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 229 respondents and 210 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. While the hypotheses was tested Pearson Correlation statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is a significant relationship parental divorce and poor emotional stability of victimized children. Furthermore, the study revealed that parental divorce has a significant negative impact on children’s emotional well-being of children, as it leads high temperament among children, it affects children’s self-esteem, it negatively affects children’s mental health, it results to antisocial behaviour among children, and results to deviant behaviour among children. Therefore, it is recommended that comprehensive support systems be established to address the emotional well-being of children affected by parental divorce in Nigeria. These support systems should include counseling and mental health services tailored to the needs of children experiencing family dissolution. To mention but a few.
