Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the influence of family background on the social adjustment of adolescent students in Ilorin South Local Government Area. The study was specifically carried out to examine the influence of parents’ educational level on the social adjustment of adolescent students, assess the effect of parents’ socio-economic status on the social adjustment of adolescent students, determine the influence of family structure on the social adjustment of adolescent students, and assess the influence of family size on the social adjustment of adolescent students in Ilorin South Local Government Area. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 3,200 adolescent students aged 10 to 19 years enrolled in both public and private secondary schools within Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 356 respondents were selected as sample size using multi-stage sampling technique, which included stratified and convenience sampling methods. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, means, and standard deviations, while hypotheses were tested using Pearson Chi-square statistical tool. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that parents’ educational level has a significant influence on social adjustment at r = 0.312, t = 5.76, p = 0.002, parents’ socio-economic status has a significant effect on social adjustment at r = 0.285, t = 5.25, p = 0.004, family structure significantly influences social adjustment at r = 0.298, t = 5.50, p = 0.003, and family size has a significant influence on social adjustment at r = 0.274, t = 5.10, p = 0.005. The study therefore recommends that proper education, emotional, and financial support should be provided to the children by their parents and there should be initiatives by the policy makers to support families of all sizes and structures in order to promote positive social adjustment among the adolescents.
