Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The family is universally recognized as the fundamental unit of society, playing a crucial role in the socialization and moral development of children. Within this context, the structure and dynamics of a family significantly influence the behavior and development of its members. Broken homes, characterized by the absence of one or both parents due to divorce, separation, or death, can disrupt the nurturing environment essential for healthy development. Moreover, domestic violence within homes exacerbates these disruptions, creating an environment of fear and instability that profoundly impacts children’s moral and behavioral development.
Children from broken homes often face numerous challenges that can adversely affect their development. The absence of a stable family structure can lead to feelings of insecurity, low self-esteem, and emotional distress. Research indicates that children from broken homes are at a higher risk of developing behavioral problems, including aggression, delinquency, and substance abuse (Amato, 2020). These issues can be compounded for students with learning disabilities, who already face unique challenges in academic and social settings. Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders, require additional support and understanding from caregivers. In a broken home, the lack of consistent parental support and guidance can hinder these students’ ability to cope with their academic and social difficulties, potentially leading to maladaptive moral behaviors.
Domestic violence further compounds the negative impact of broken homes. Witnessing or experiencing violence within the home can have devastating effects on children’s psychological well-being and moral development. Exposure to domestic violence is associated with a range of negative outcomes, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and behavioral problems (Wolfe et al., 2023). For students with learning disabilities, the impact can be even more severe. These students may already struggle with emotional regulation and social interactions; exposure to violence can exacerbate these difficulties, leading to increased aggression, withdrawal, or other problematic behaviors. The trauma from domestic violence can impair their ability to trust others and form healthy relationships, which are crucial for moral development.
The moral behaviors of children are significantly shaped by their family environment. Moral behavior encompasses actions and attitudes that align with societal norms and values, such as honesty, respect, empathy, and responsibility. The development of these behaviors is largely influenced by the modeling and reinforcement of parents and caregivers. In stable homes, parents typically provide consistent guidance and serve as role models for appropriate behavior. In contrast, broken homes and environments characterized by domestic violence may lack the stability and positive role models necessary for healthy moral development (Garbarino & Plantz, 2016). Children from such environments may struggle to distinguish between right and wrong, leading to moral confusion and potentially harmful behaviors.
Students with learning disabilities are particularly susceptible to the influences of their home environment. These students often rely on consistent routines and supportive relationships to navigate their academic and social challenges. In the absence of a stable home environment, they may experience heightened stress and anxiety, which can manifest in behavioral issues. The lack of parental support and positive reinforcement can also hinder their ability to develop self-discipline and moral reasoning. Studies have shown that children with learning disabilities who experience family instability or violence are at an increased risk of developing conduct disorders and exhibiting antisocial behavior (Margolin & Gordis, 2020).
However, the influence of broken homes and domestic violence on the moral behaviors of students with learning disabilities is profound. The instability and trauma associated with these environments can significantly hinder the moral and behavioral development of these students, exacerbating their existing challenges. Understanding these influences is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems to help these vulnerable students navigate their academic and social environments successfully. By addressing the root causes of their behavioral issues, educators, counselors, and policymakers can better support the moral and overall development of students with learning disabilities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Broken homes and domestic violence on moral behaviors among students with learning disabilities in Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos, represents a pressing and multifaceted problem that requires urgent attention. In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the profound and often detrimental impact that family instability and domestic violence can have on children’s developmental and educational outcomes. Students with learning disabilities are particularly vulnerable to these adverse influences, which can exacerbate their existing challenges and further impede their academic and social development.
One of the primary issues arising from broken homes is the lack of stable and supportive family environments, which are crucial for the healthy development of moral and ethical behaviors in children. Broken homes often result in single-parent households, frequent relocations, and inconsistent parental supervision and discipline. These conditions can lead to emotional distress, feelings of insecurity, and behavioral problems among children (Amato & Anthony, 2014). For students with learning disabilities, who already face significant academic and social challenges, the absence of a stable home environment can further hinder their ability to develop appropriate moral behaviors and social skills.
Domestic violence is another critical factor that negatively influences the moral behaviors of students with learning disabilities. Exposure to domestic violence, whether physical, emotional, or psychological, can have severe and lasting effects on children’s mental health and well-being. Children who witness or experience domestic violence may develop trauma-related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can interfere with their ability to learn and engage in school activities (Finkelhor et al., 2015). Additionally, domestic violence can model aggressive and antisocial behaviors, leading children to replicate these behaviors in their interactions with peers and authority figures.
The combined effects of broken homes and domestic violence can create a hostile and unpredictable environment that is particularly detrimental to students with learning disabilities. These students often require consistent support, structure, and positive reinforcement to thrive academically and socially. However, the instability and violence associated with broken homes can disrupt their learning processes, undermine their self-esteem, and contribute to behavioral issues such as aggression, defiance, and withdrawal (Margolin & Vickerman, 2017). Consequently, these students may struggle to adhere to moral and ethical standards, which are essential for building positive relationships and achieving success in both academic and social contexts.
Furthermore, the educational system in Alimosho LGA, Lagos, may not be adequately equipped to address the complex needs of students affected by broken homes and domestic violence. Teachers and school counselors often lack the training and resources needed to identify and support students dealing with these issues (Osher et al., 2016). Additionally, the stigma associated with learning disabilities and family violence can prevent students and their families from seeking help, further exacerbating the problem. Without appropriate interventions and support systems in place, students with learning disabilities in Alimosho LGA are at a heightened risk of developing maladaptive behaviors and experiencing academic failure. Therefore there is an need to examine the influence of broken homes and domestic violence on moral behaviors among students with learning disabilities in Alimosho LGA, Lagos, State.
