Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Social media has become an inevitable and inseparable part of modern life, and it has been revealed that more than half of the global population use social media. In other words, 3.96 billion people use social media today, accounting for roughly 51 percent of the global population. (https://datareportal.com). Furthermore, it has been estimated that more than 1 million people have started using social media over the past 12 months, and it is almost 12 new users every second. This suggests that the number of social media users increases faster today than at the beginning of the year 2020. (https://datareportal.com). Thus, it is not difficult to understand the extent of the impact the social media brings to our lives. Various studies have shown that the social media do have a significant impact on peoples’ social life, professional life as well as personal life. However, referring to those studies, one can not exactly say whether social media is good or bad. Effects of social media have been identified both as positive and negative in different studies.
A wider variety of social media platforms were seen during the year 2020, and the Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Web Chat, Tumblr, TikTok, Reddit, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, My Space are the popular social media platforms in 2020. The below chart shows the worlds’ most used social platforms in 2020. Tiktok debuted on the web in September 2016 and quickly garnered interest in the social sharing space. Because of the constant stream of celebrities taking to the stage, the media has become a source of interest for teenagers and young adults all over the world. Tiktok is an app that allows users to record 15-second videos that continue until the user selects the next video. It’s also possible to combine video clips, which take 60-second clasps into account. Music tests, channels, quick cuts, stickers, and other add-ons can all be mixed and matched to create recordings (Yang, 2021; Kirschner, 2020). Young people use the app to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing, and it allows them to make videos and share them with other. They grew their following by utilizing photographs and writing to tell stories about their personal lives and lifestyles, interacting with their audiences both online and offline, and monetizing their four followers by embedding native advertising into blog or social mediaposts. Various teachers have adopted this application as a means of disseminating information .Whether we’re talking about teachers, they all have the ability to disseminate material online by generating short films. Tiktok’s contribution to knowledge transmission is the content categories from which users can watch videos, as well as the arrangement of videos by areas of activity, which allows viewers to watch videos from that section. Furthermore, a video added to the educational field is viewed through the platform not only by its own students but also by students from other regions, schools, and users who are not students but members of society, thus broadening the audience. Our phones can pose a distraction with a notification even if we try to ignore the notification. Anyone can receive notifications from Tiktok when someone they are following either posts a new video or does a live stream on the app. This could potentially contribute to how often participants go on Tiktok each day. The more notifications they receive, the more likely they would be to click on the app and use it, therefore affecting variables such as amount of time spent on Tiktok each day, losing track of time on Tiktok, paying attention in class, and completing school work. As a College students in emerging adulthood we could say that we are more likely to lose track of time on TikTok the more they use the app throughout the day. This then could negatively impact how these college students are able to pay attention in class and complete their schoolwork. The more time that a college student spends on Tiktok, the more they will lose track of time and then that impacts what they are able to complete for their classes. This could in turn cause them to get worse grades than if they were to not go on Tiktok as often or at all because they would not have the distraction from The App.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Social media abuse is a source of moral decay among students today. Among the main effects is that students easily follow things that are neglected as well as follow western culture for sheer pleasure. Furthermore, with the diversity of electronic social media such as hardware (gadgets) supplied with unlimited internet facilities, it indirectly has a huge impact on student morale. As a result, there is a change of foreign culture through various Jewish schemes that seek to corrupt the morals and lifestyles of today’s young generation, in order to live in a culture of Hinduism and humanism in order to fulfil aimless pleasures in the future. This Hindu culture causes students to waste a lot of time with online games such as PUBG, Dota and so on. Even students can easily follow western cultural trends such as the culture brought in the film and music industry, where elements of humanism are highlighted like films adapted from comics that show human greatness beyond the power of God. In addition, today’s students are affected by the era of globalization in the development of telecommunications technology and social media that provide coverage in every corner of the world without borders and no proper monitoring from responsible parties; this makes students vulnerable to negative influences. Reality television contains many elements imitated from foreign cultures, programs and dramas featuring free association, violent stories in the form of violence and programs that are purely entertainment. The effect has a lot of influence on students on the appearance of morals that are contrary to Islamic law. Thus, polemics about social issues among students are actually the result of the influence of the social media industry. The development of the media industry in Malaysia must be given monitoring in the use of media to avoid the elements that contribute to the collapse of student morale. This problematic situation prompted researchers to make a study related to the impact of social media on moral decay among students. This is because students are an asset to the social, cultural, political, sports and economic development of the country the future and the next generation to today’s leadership that will lead the nation towards a developed nation. Therefore, the problems that arise among them need to be given due attention to provide preparation towards the excellence of knowledge, morals and various knowledge needs to be done from now on. By having this issue in research, an early step can be taken to prevent the misuse of social media among students. Besides, each level of related management such as parents and school are aware about the positive and negative impact by letting their children access to media social. Nowadays, social media are widely use in education, business, or any related business to have people to catch up with one and another. But, guidelines or rules for the use of social media need to be established to ensure its use in a positive way.

1.8 Limitation of Study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint was the scanty literature on the subject owing that it is a new discourse thus the researcher incurred more financial expenses and much time was required in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size covering only secondary school in Enugu education zone. Thus findings of this study cannot be used for generalization for other secondary schools in other states within Nigeria. Additionally, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work will impede maximum devotion to the research. Howbeit, despite the constraint encountered during the research, all factors were downplayed in other to give the best and make the research successful.
