The research work is set out to study Unionism and the growth of public sector organizational in Nigeria with ASUP, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba as a case study.
The reasons are that the extent and impact of trade unionism at Abia State Polytechnic, Aba was not yet known and there are needs to be ascertained. So it became very important to investigate the relationship between factors that make up trade unions in Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. It is hoped that the outcome of the study will guide policy makers, especially at Abia State Polytechnic, Aba to be better informed.
The finding above empirically proves that education of union members has significant positive impact on the performance of staff as well as organizational growth of the polytechnic, so the research hold true. This does not mean there could be no other factor, which contributes to higher performance of staff, which in turn improve organizational growth except education.
The finding also proves that strike activity of union has significance positive impact on the prompt payment of staff salaries as well as their performance in organization.
This is in disagreement with what we see in Union strike in Nigeria. Most at times, we see strike being called off without necessarily achieving what it was set out to achieve.
In spite of these limitations of this study, the following recommendations were made based on the findings.
To create an atmosphere of peace, harmony and stability and the employer should encourage the existence of trade unionism rather than antagonize it.
Trade unions should always act as a union as it is called and not as an individual entity so as to have a collective strength to be able to criticize bad management policies aimed exploiting the workers.
Finally, the management of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba should maintain a very cordial and closely-knit relationship with her work force. This will make for greater fulfillment, commitment to their work and overall productivity of the work force.
