Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the impact of peace education on ethnic conflict and sustainable development in Nigeria using Yaba, Lagos State as a case study. The study was carried out to investigate how peace education influences the attitudes and behaviors of individuals towards ethnic conflict in Nigeria, explore how peace education contributes to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainable development, identify the obstacles hindering the effective implementation and sustainability of peace education programs in Nigeria, and provide recommendations needed to enhance the effectiveness of peace education in reducing ethnic conflict and promoting sustainable development. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 147 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses was tested Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that peace education influence the attitudes and behaviors of individuals towards ethnic conflict in Nigeria. Furthermore, the study revealed that the obstacles hindering the effective implementation and sustainability of peace education programs in Nigeria includes: ethnic and religious divisions, inadequate support from government policies, gender inequality, limited funding and financial resources. Therefore, it is recommended that the Nigerian government should integrate peace education into the national school curricula at all levels of education. This includes primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. Peace education should encompass topics such as conflict resolution, human rights, and cultural diversity to foster understanding and tolerance among students from a young age. To mention but a few.
