Introduction
1.1 Background Of The Study
Today’s world is technologically driven, and each nation must compete with every other in terms of economic and technological development in the global information-based economy. Both parents and the school community need to make a conscious and intentional effort to facilitate the development of academic and social/emotional skills in children in order to comply with international expectations in education and employment (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2007) and train a nation’s youth to succeed in a global economy. Parents and the school system must work together.parental involvement is described as parents’ behaviors, both at home and at school, that support the growth of their children’s social/emotional skills and help them succeed academically (El Nokali, Bachman, & Votruba-Drzal, 2010; Goleman, 1998).Skills that promote the integration of social and emotional knowledge and enhance problem-solving and leadership-context tasks in which the child must communicate with others have been defined as socioemotional intelligence Humans, as a result, struggle with a wide range of feelings in social settings (Goleman, 1998).Similarly, we address the role of parents as support mechanisms for children’s social and emotional development, which is described as the process by which children acquire and apply the skills, behaviors, and abilities that will help them understand and control feelings, set goals, empathize with others, and make responsible decisions (Taylor et al., 2017; Redding, 2014).This emphasizes the importance of parents supporting their children’s academic and social/emotional development in order to have a real effect on their development as individuals preparing to engage with society on a global scale. Parent-supported acquisition of social/emotional skills should be promoted in the lives of their children in order for them to gain success.
1.2 Statement Of The Problem
In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in the role of emotional skills in students’ academic performance as well as their emotional development both within and outside of the classroom. If we consider the “effective, long-term” parental involvement, the promotion of social/emotional skills to improve students’ academic achievement finds an ally in the extent and style of parental involvement. Caring partnerships enhance both intellectual and socio-emotional learning” (Elias, 2006, p. 7).According to Goleman (1998), an individual’s socio-emotional intelligence facilitates the processing of social and emotional knowledge, as well as the capacity to problem-solve and participate in leadership tasks that include interpersonal interactions. In the principle of socio-emotional intelligence, some of the competencies and abilities found include:(a) self-awareness; (b) self-regulation; (c) social skill; (d) empathy; and (e) motivation. A person equipped with such social/emotional skills is able to handle with confidence the varied challenges he or she faces. According to research on socio-emotional intelligence, there is a connection between it and academic performance, and emotional intelligence is strongly linked to more prosocial activities and less antisocial behaviors in elementary school students (Mavroveli & Sánchez Ruiz, 2011).
1.3 Objective Of The Study
- To assess the impact of parent involvement on social moral development on adolescent.
- To investigate if parent involvement on adolescents affects a child’s behaviour in school.
1.4 Research Questions
- What are the impact of parent involvement on social moral development of adolescent?
- Do parents involvement on adolescents affect the child’s behaviour in school?
1.5 Significance Of The Study
The findings of the study would be useful to parents as it provides information about their communications processes.
1.6 Scope Of The Study
This study focus on parents involvement on social moral development in adolescents, the study was carried out in Yenegoa, Bayelsa.
1.7 Limitation Of Study
Research material was inadequate, restricting the study also time constraint these are some of the challenge the researcher faced while carrying out the research.
1.8 Definition Of Terms
Parent:
Either a father or a mother, one who bears or gives birth to an infant, or who nurtures and raises one, a parent serves as a protector
Adolescents:
Adolescence is a process of physical and psychological change that develops between adolescence and legal adulthood. While adolescence is commonly identified with the teenage years, its physical, psychological, and cultural manifestations can begin and end at any time.
Social-Moral:
Social Morality is simply doing the right thing
