The Impact Of The Internet On Secretarial Studies In Selected Business Organisations
The aim of this study is to find out the impact of the internet on secretarial profession. This research covers the selected business organizations in Enugu metropolis. In this research, the related literature was reviewed. The population used for this study was ninety secretaries which were picked from selected seven business organization in Enugu metropolis. The instrument used for this study was ninety questionnaires which were administered to secretaries in few organizations in Enugu metropolis. The data collected were analysed and presented in tables. Having analysed the findings in the previous chapter and the results one can find out was that, the internet is a helpful device to the secretarial profession in Enugu metropolis. In the light of the result, the researchers suggest that the secretaries should be able to know the operational mode of the internet, since it is very important to their profession. And also, it will help the secretaries to get the needed training they required by giving them more time after work.
1.1 Background of the Study
The country if not the whole universe is on the brink of immense technology, and this phenomenon has get in far reaching effect on almost all spheres of human endeavour. Different people have perceptions of what impact the modern technology via the Internet is playing to address the issues of performance of the secretarial profession in the new millennium. To be precise, many scholars have dealt on this topic but the researchers of the project work have tried to portray actually what the impact of the internet is regarding the performance of secretarial profession. The internet according to Cerf,  president of the internet society ‘is a specific collaboration of independently managed networks that allow users at disparate heterogeneous computer networks to communicate with each other across organizational and geographical boundaries. Its main function in any social system may be identified as information, education, entertainers, discussion, communication and integration. Therefore, the Internet as an information superhighway has been aroused to perform all these immeasurable impact for the rest of the world. One cannot talk about information and access without making regular reference to the information technologies and their convergence particularly the INTERNET. Information and communication technology are rapidly changing the way we work and live, most especially regarding the way the office is handled. We see a world of network. That is bringing new opportunities and options to people at work, at home and on the move directly stating how our society live, work, learn, play and how our society evolves. In the secretarial profession, information and communication are the very essence of the content and that is what the internet is all about. Information derives its value from the meaning that an entity [a human being] assigns to data. It therefore becomes a performed in an organization. The question now is, how far this form of inexhaustible resource can carry the users with special internet on the secretarial profession. The machines used in the secretarial profession are involved effectively to perform the work in business media, the mass media, the information gathering media, and the likes, have seen the different faces of typewriters, mail exchange, computers, cellular, fax, telephone and other technological information gathering system
1.2 Statement of the Problem
People say or believe that the internet has no impact on secretarial profession. Those secretaries do not need the internet at all. They also say that secretaries only need the typewriter to carry out their duties. They also say that if secretaries include the use of the internet in their profession, that work will be tedious. According to Sir Walter Ford, the duty of the secretary is to take down records, minutes of the meetings and typing of orders by the above authorities and it involves the use of the typewriter. Vin Pluto  says thus, ‘the internet is used by high senior officials and those trained personnel and as such the secretaries do not fit into this cadre’. Peter Roberts in his opinion says, ‘the internet and the secretary are not compatible’. So for these very reasons, we have decided to carry out this research work so as to find out the actual impact the internet has on the secretarial profession. Stressing more on the meaning of the internet and how it works Rutherford F. July 22 1997, described the internet as ‘a global collection of many different types of computers and computer networks that are linked together. The secretarial profession, people who are conversant with the services that the personal computer renders will no doubt find the internet fascinating job-made-easy and enjoyable. But many people cannot purchase or acquire this precious information superhighway, what risks are involved. Who are supposed to use this inexhaustible resource?
1.3 The Objectives of the Study
In view of the above problem, this research work is therefore designed to the following;
- To find out the impact of internet on the secretarial profession.
- To ascertain, the impact of the internet, on the lives of individual secretaries.
- To ascertain, if the use of internet facilities, is a monotonous task to the secretary.
- To ascertain if there are problems being caused by the internet in the secretarial profession.
- To give remedies and solutions to such problems if any.
1.4 Research Hypotheses
For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;
- H0: there is no impact of internet on the secretarial profession
H1: there is impact of internet on the secretarial profession
- H02: there are no problems being caused by the internet in the secretarial profession
H2: there are no problems being caused by the internet in the secretarial profession
1.5 Significance of the Study
It is important that secretaries should at times take critical look outside their private areas of concentration and state the latest system of improving their techniques at their field of specialization. The study is not only important to the secretary but will also serve as a green light to the entertainment world, education, communication and media practitioners on how to restructure their programmes to suit their receiving audience. It will moreover help the secretary to be abreast with the events taking place within and outside the country.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The geographical area covered by the researchers in Enugu metropolis selected Government parastatals in Enugu State are used as samples on which judging the impact of the internet to the secretarial profession will be based.
The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;
a) Availability of Research Material:
The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
1.7 Definition of Terms
The Internet (contraction of interconnected network) is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide
Secretarial studies refer to the range of courses that will equip you with the key skills and core competencies needed to work as a secretary.
A business organization is an entity aimed at carrying on commercial enterprise by providing goods or services, to meet needs of the customers. The different forms of business organizations are Sole Proprietorship, General Partnership, Limited Partnership, Corporation, “S” Corporation, and Limited Liability Company.
1.8 Organization of the Study
This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows
- Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
- Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
- Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
- Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
- Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study

In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges the internet on secretarial studies in selected business organization
This study was the internet on secretarial studies in selected business organization. Five objectives were raised which included: To find out the impact of internet on the secretarial profession. To ascertain, the impact of the internet, on the lives of individual secretaries, to ascertain, if the use of internet facilities, is a monotonous task to the secretary, to ascertain if there are problems being caused by the internet in the secretarial profession, to give remedies and solutions to such problems if any. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of Government parastatals in Enugu State. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made up directors, secretaries, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies
Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that many private business organizations have computers and other modern office technological gadgets. Some however do not have and this affected the productivity of secretaries in such business organizations. The skills of the secretaries in the use of technological gadgets are basically portrayed in virtually all aspects of the working environment in a modern business office
- Office Technology Managers/Secretaries should embark on ICT training courses, seminars, workshops both for existing and prospective secretaries at regular intervals to keep in pace with the current wave in this technologically changing world.
- Appropriate legislation and implementation procedures should be in place that will encourage more public and private business organisations adapt to the use of suitable or appropriate ICT in the performance of secretarial functions by the secretaries.
- The cost of procurement and installation of some ICT devices are still out of the reach of the common man. Therefore, government should reduce import duties or tax free ICT devices and gadgets to enable more people and organisations have them.
