Abstract


In this study, our focus was on the impact of 4G mobile communication system on academic performance of undergraduate computer science students in rivers state, River State University as case study. The study is was specifically focused on examining the level of usage of 4G Mobile Communication System by Rivers State University students, ascertaining the impact of 4G Mobile Communication System on students learning process and to find out the factors which encouraged students to use the technology and imbibe it in their learning curriculum. The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 100 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are students and staff of Rivers State University.

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Mobile technology is becoming more popular in our educational system with increase in the enrolment and population explosion in the university education. Mobile technology is used for cellular communication. It is a form of technology that mostly used in cellular communication. These include general packet services GSM, multimedia messaging MMS, Bluetooth, 3G wireless fidelity WIFI global positioning system GPS etc. it is the technology that is portable, it refers to any devices that you can carry with you to perform a wide variety of tasks.

Information and communication technology is a principal driver in our Information Society of which the immediate consequences for educational practice can be observed (Kozma, 2005). Following this evolution, several authors have mentioned the need to shift from the traditional classroom setting, where the student is seen as a passive consumer of educational knowledge, to a classroom in which learners are considered active participants and where collaboration and sharing information in a resource-rich environment is given precedence (Hill & Hannafin, 2001; Pelgrum, 2001; Figueiredo & Afonso, 2005). Fallon (2013), observed that to advance this shift and the necessary educational reform, hardware and software developers promote new technological tools, and more specifically tablet devices, as magic devices. These tablets are more narrowly defined by the New Media Consortium in 2012 as iPads, Windows or Android devices, i.e. small, wireless, mobile personal computers which have finger-driven touch screens and are backed-up by diverse applications in a well-provisioned application market place (Melhuish, 2010, Clark & Luckin, 2013).

Hattie, (2013) claimed that the following conditions should be fulfilled in order to integrate technology into the classroom; namely the role of the teacher, the need of professionalization, and the need of adapted teaching and learning approaches.

While it can be argued that the use of technology during classes can support constructivist approaches (Linn, 1998; Sanhoitz, Ringstaff & Dwyer 1998), implementing technology into classes does not imply a radical change of the didactics (Stoddart & Niederhauser, 1993; VanDusen, 1995). According to Yelland, (2006), learning with technology needs more than making learning activities digital, it is also about creating ‘contexts for authentic learning that use new technologies in integrated and meaningful ways to enhance the production of knowledge and the communication and dissemination of ideas’.

The approaching 4G mobile communication systems are projected to solve remaining problems of 3G (third generation) systems and to provide a wide variety of new services, from high quality voice to high definition video to high data rate wireless channels. The term 4G is used broadly to include several types of broadband wireless access communication systems, not only cellular telephone systems. One of the terms used to describe 4G is MAGIC –Mobile multimedia, anytime anywhere, Global mobility support, integrated wireless solution, and customized personal service. As a promise for the future, 4G systems, that is, cellular broadband wireless access systems have been attracting much interest in the mobile communication arena. The 4G systems not only will support the next generation of mobile service, but also will support the fixed wireless networks. This paper presents an overall vision of the 4G features, framework, and integration of mobile communication. The features of 4G systems might be summarized with one word integration.

Technically, 4G stands for one integrated, IP –based environment for all telecommunications requirements including voice, video, broadcasting media and Internet that utilizes both fixed and wireless networks. In 4G, the user is the central focus point. By means of intelligent terminals, the user can get simple broadband access to a range of services that take into account his personal preferences and context. Even without interrupting ongoing conversation, work or video viewing, the user can change terminals or switch unnoticeably between the underlying fixed and mobile networks (UMTS, WLAN, etc.). And by means of ad-hoc networking, his mobile terminals can form networks among themselves or with the terminals of third parties. Throughout all this complex procedures, the user always maintains full control over privacy, security risks and costs. This extraordinary vision regarding 4G networks and services is a natural extension of the current development of broadband Internet and 3G mobile networks like UMTS.

According to Ring (2012), the main types of mobile devices used in education process include, Note book computer, tablet PC, Personal Digital Assistance (PDA), Cellular Phones, Smart Phones, Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Bluetooth, Infrared Data Association (IrDA). Among its characteristics are accessibility, interactivity, situating of instructional activities, adaptability, immediacy and permanency among others. Its prospects include but not limited to Short Message Services (SMS), cell broadcast, voice and call forwarding, e-commerce, mobile payment, e-banking, and e-learning. M-learning is not without its limitation, these include inadequate power supply, lack of raw material input, inappropriate infrastructural support, increased armed robbery and lack of technical and competent staff maintenance capacity which we believe are surmountable in the near future. M-learning as operated in some developed countries of the world should be introduced in to Nigeria University system in no distant future.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Bones (1970) reported that technological explosion in communication has both great potential and great danger, the outcome depends on crucial decision making and on where and by whom they are taken. 4G Mobile Communication System powered our access to information and enable new form of communication. It also serves many online services in the sphere of education and provision of information.

In a few pilot studies, (Hanaver, Dible, Fortin and Col, 2004), compared the relative effectiveness of three versions of hypermedia systems, namely, Text, Sound/Text, and Sound. The results indicate that those working with Sound could focus their attention on the critical information. Those working with the Text and Sound/Text version however, did not learn as much and stated their displeasure with reading so much text from the screen. Based on this study, it is clear at least at this time that such Web-based innovations cannot serve as an adequate substitute for face-to-face live instruction

Ilo and Ifijeh, (2010), argue that schools should use funding to improve real education rather than invest in computer technology and rely on telecommunications for education. Furthermore they indicated that the computer was often a crutch that diverted time and resources from programs taught students to think and evaluate information. Online learning education does for knowledge what just-in-time delivery does for manufacturing: It delivers the right tools and parts when you need them. However, developing online learning is typically an intense process, which should take much of the faculty development time.

4G Mobile Communication System use in Nigeria has permeated all facets of activities in Nigeria. Everybody use the 4G Mobile Communication System to communicate and to learn. However, the use of 4G Mobile Communication System is more popular among students in higher institutions. This has led to an increased in the use of 4G Mobile Communication System for learning. Therefore, this study sets out to investigate the impact Of 4Gmobile communication system on academic performance of undergraduate computer science students In Rivers State.


1.3 Objectives of the Study

The aim of this Study is to promote a kind of social scientific understanding about the extent, efficiency and challenges and the Impact Of 4G Mobile Communication System On Academic Performance Of Undergraduate Computer Science Students In Rivers State. Therefore, in this regard, this study is to find out the following objectives;

  1. The level of usage of 4G Mobile Communication System by Rivers State University students.
  2. To ascertain the impact of 4G Mobile Communication System on students learning process.
  3. To find out the factors which encouraged students to use the technology and imbibe it in their learning curriculum.

1.4 Research Questions

In order to give the research a focus, the following research questions were raised;

  1. Do you have access to a mobile phone?
  2. Does 4G Mobile Communication System aid learning among students?
  3. What is the level of 4G Mobile Communication System usage by students?
  4. What type or kind of learning can students gain from 4G Mobile Communication System usage?
  5. Is the usage of 4G Mobile Communication System affecting students learning habits?
  6. Is the use of 4G Mobile Communication System by students negative or positive?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research is significance because it is geared towards giving us a clear and concise understanding of the use of 4G Mobile Communication System among students of tertiary institutions to aid their learning process.

It will also educate the students of Rivers State University, River state and students of other higher institutions of learning; on the best way to manage mobile phone in order to enhance effective communication and learning. It is in this context that this study hopes to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and also serve as secondary information to future researchers.


1.6 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to the use of 4G Mobile Communication System as a medium for learning among students, a case study of River State University. The study will look into the uses of the 4G Mobile Communication System among Nigerian student of higher institutions of learning. It is narrowed down to students of River State University, River state for the purpose of convenience.


1.7 Limitations of the Study

This study is limited mainly for the general usage of 4G Mobile Communication System in River State University, River State. The researcher will not be able to conduct a census study of all the users of 4G Mobile Communication System within the University, due to limited hands. Financial constrain is another limitation, that is why the research is limited and carried out within the vicinity of Rivers State University main campus here in River state.
Another limitation of this study as in the case of future use is the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT). Hence different companies and brand of 4G Mobile Communication System are coming out day by day.


1.8 Definition of Key Terms

Learning:

This simply means to acquire knowledge or skills. In this context, it means how Rivers State University students use 4G Mobile Communication System to learn.


1.9 Organizations of the Study

The chapter one consist of the introductory part of the study which includes the study background, the statement of the research problem, the study objective and scope of the study.

The second chapter is a critical review of other literatures relevant to the study and its objectives including the theoretical framework for the study. While the third chapter is methods of data collection, sampling and data analysis used in conducting the study. The fourth chapter centres around the research findings including an analysis of how it relates to previous findings. The fifth chapter consists of the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations base on the study objectives.

5.2 Summary of the Study

5.3 Conclusions

With respect to the analysis and the findings of this study, the following conclusions emerged;

It is blatant that, the proliferation of the Internet and Information Communication Technology has affected almost every facet of teaching and learning, especially in distance education where course is being delivered either by blended mode of teaching or fully online. With reference to the findings of this study, it was revealed that the distance learning students of the River State University find it easy to use a smartphone in their academic activities which enhance their perceived usefulness of using a smartphone for learning activities. The findings can be attributed to the fact that since part of their course is delivery via digital mode, there is the tendency that, they were fueled to learn how to use a smartphone to access which is a common platform for course delivery.


5.4 Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made:

  1. Mobile technology should be adopted into the Curriculum of the undergraduate students of Nigerian Universities.
  2. Undergraduate students of Nigerian Universities should be allowed to make use of mobile technology devices as part of their learning resources within the classroom.
