High Phone Usage Among Big Girls And Big Boys Of Higher Institution And Its Impact On The Educational Standard Of Our Youth
Abstract
This study was carried out to examine of high phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institution and its impact on the educational standard of youth in Nigeria using University of Lagos, Lagos State. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria, investigate the smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria and investigate the negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 259 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that smart phone usage have a negative impacts on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria. The study thereby recommend that University authorities in Nigeria should take a more active role in the effort to reduce the adverse effects of mobile phone usage amongst students from the angle of examination malpractices. The use of mobile phones by students during lecture hours should be prohibited by university managements to enable students to be more focused on their academic learning. Students should switch off their phones or put them on silent mode while receiving lectures. It is also recommended that students should dedicate much of their mobile phone usage time to research and academic activities. In other words they should visit websites that pertain to areas of their academics, as against engaging in social networking and pinging.

Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Thanks to developments in information and communication technologies, globalization has altered our lives and continues to do so daily. One aspect of this transformation is in the way we communicate (ICT). The mobile phone is one ICT that is developing quickly. Since the late 1990s, mobile phones have gained popularity (Meek, 2006). As of right now, there are 7 billion mobile connections globally and over 3.5 billion unique mobile subscriptions (Twum, 2011). Young people particularly like mobile phones, and they are widely used in educational institutions. These days, these phones are more than simply voice calling devices. Texting and short messaging services (SMS) have grown commonplace worldwide. Few of us save pictures of our loved ones in our wallets. These days, we store pictures to our cell phones and access them with a simple tap on the screen. Since their sudden rise in popularity in the late 1990s, mobile phones have almost become a necessity in everyday life. Ling did (2004). According to a 2010 countrywide poll, adolescents believe mobile phones to be their most essential form of communication. It has practically impacted the accessibility, safety, and coordination of social and commercial activities in society, and as a result, it has assimilated into global culture. According to Ling (2004), schools and families are the conventional socialization agents. The necessity for highly qualified employees has led to the growth of the educational system, which has resulted in the school system assuming more and greater responsibility in socialization. Remarkably, there hasn’t been any study on the impact of large boys’ and girls’ heavy cell phone usage on the scholastic attainment of young people in Nigeria today. Regarding mobile phones, there is a tension between the priorities of youth, parents, and teachers. Teachers are more concerned with things like classroom discipline, while parents are more concerned with ways to stay in touch with their children at all times. Researchers have shown that there are issues with the excessive phone use in classrooms. The cell phone is “at cross purpose with the mission of the school,” as stated by Ling and Helmerson (2000). Students are expected to fulfill their assigned tasks while in school, focusing only on their education and avoiding interaction with the outside world. However, the widespread usage of mobile phones allows students to combine their responsibilities with other roles, which may be distracting and interfere with their ability to complete their education (Gergen, 2002; Halpen, 2003; & Franzini, 2002). There were less interruptions and diversions in the past when schools used landline telephones, but now days, with the proliferation of mobile phones and parents’ need to stay in touch with their children, the gadget is becoming a part of the classroom. As a result, excessive mobile phone usage has the potential to impair student control over schools and to undermine their authority. It may also have an impact on students’ educational success.. Therefore, the study examine high phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institution and its impact on the educational standard of youth in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Students all throughout the globe now carry mobile phones in their life to an unprecedented extent. Students arriving at school or class with some of the most expensive and sophisticated mobile phones, tablets, and iPads that have all the features, applications, and software that can connect them to the internet and other websites, social media platforms, and so on, are common sights in our higher education institutions today. On these devices, students chat, access, stream, download, upload, exchange, and play various media contents, the majority of which are pornographic in nature (Olofuniyi,Fashiku,& Owombo 2012). Some of these devices’ memory and mobility allowed users to save content for viewing whenever and wherever it was most convenient for them. These mobile phones’ security PINs and passwords shield the contents from parents’ and teachers’ inspection and prying eyes. Because of this, the majority of the teenagers’ mobile phones have some kind of pornographic material on them (McGuigan, 2005). As the Internet and technology develop daily, cell phones have become gods or status symbols that students cannot live without. Today’s youth not only need to own the appropriate cars, laptops, or trainers, but they also need to own the appropriate phones with all the gadgets. As a result, name-calling and ongoing intimidation over kids who have the “wrong,” Cell phones are annoying.. It is against this background that this research seek to assess high phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institution and its impact on the educational standard of youth in Nigeria.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The broad objective of the study is to assess high phone usage among big girls and big boys of higher institution and it impact on the educational standard of our youth. The specific objectives is as follows:
- Determine the extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria.
- Investigate the smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria.
- Investigate the negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
The following questions will guide the study:
- What is the extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria?
- What are the smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria?
- What are the negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
- Ho: Smart phone usage do not have a negative impacts on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria.
- Ha: Smart phone usage have a negative impacts on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The value of this study is to evaluate and see if this research will be beneficial to the management team, students, and technical centers at University of Lagos.
The management team at University of Lagos could use this research to create programs and formulate better lecture materials or study guides that include Smartphones as a learning and communication tool and this would in turn boost academic performance.The outcome of this research will lead to a better understanding of Smartphones, its uses towards academic performance. It will also enable students know their flaws and make corrections to it. The output of this research work will also add to the current literature in Smartphone usage.
The findings will add to the bulk of literature available to the students and researchers who may be interested in carrying out similar
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on high phone usage among big girls and big boys of higher institution and it impact on the educational standard of our youth. Hence, the study will determine the extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria, investigate the smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria and investigate the negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria. Hence, the study is delimited to University of Lagos.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher resorted to a moderate choice of sample size. More so, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

1.10 Organization of the Studies
The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

5.1 Summary
In this study, our focus was on the assessment of high phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institution and its impact on the educational Attainment of youth in Nigeria using University of Lagos as case study. The study specifically was aimed at highlighting determine the extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria, investigate the smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria and investigate the negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria. The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 259 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are students in University of Lagos.
5.2 Conclusions
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusions:
- The extent of smart phone usage among big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria is high.
- The smart phone based activities which influences the academics achievement of big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria includes:
- The negative effects of excessive smart phone usage on the academic attainment big boys and girls in higher institutions in Nigeria includes: chatting, seeing movies online, video streaming, playing video game, and surfing the internet.
- Students who are addicted to using smartphones, cheat on assignments
- Lack of focus in learning
- Decrease in academic performance
- The skills and cognitive abilities students needed for academic success are negatively affected by excessive phone use
5.3 Recommendations
