Factors Associated With Mass Failure Of Students In Business Education

Abstract

Business Education is an essential part of the Nigerian education system. This study is aimed at finding out the factors associated with mass failure of students in Business Education. A total of 134 respondents were selected from the population figure out of which the sample size was determined. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency table, percentage and mean score analysis while the nonparametric statistical test (Chi-square) was used to test the formulated hypothesis using SPSS (statistical package for social sciences). It is believed that the importance of Business Education if well understood and all the factors responsible for its unhealthy development are quickly nipped on the bud it would be possible to build a Business Education culture oriented society which will augur well for the healthy development of the nation. This research will help inform the stakeholders of business education on improvements that will guide the discipline in the future.

Introduction

Background to the Study

In the Nigeria national policy on education (1981) it stated that school education should “equip students to live attentively in our modern age of business education”. In accordance with this aim of education, Boge (1979) has this to say, “one major educational problem is preparing the young people to cope with the intellectual and cultural environment characterized by rapid changes”, it is assumed that these young people should have some basic understanding for the English language

Business education has continued to occupy its separate place and some time, it is often neglected in some schools even where the various branches of English language are taught they are done without regard for the basic requirement needed in spite of the effort made during the present decade by the federal and state government of Nigeria to give Business Education subject their role in education note much has been achieved in some schools and local government area. The effect of the deficiency in teaching Business Education in schools are particularly evident in developing countries such as Nigeria

Statement of Problem

1. To which extent has the number of students per laboratory in Nigeria affected the effective teaching of Business Education
2. In what way does inadequate use of instructional materials makes ineffective the teaching of Business Education
3. Could ineffective teaching lead to the students’ poor performance in Business Education
4. Can bad attitude of teachers towards work affect the effective teaching of Business Education
5. Could lack of instructional materials cause ineffective teaching of the teachers

Research Question

1. How does lack of instructional material affect the effective teaching of Business Education?
2. How does students’ attitude towards the subject (Business Education) affect their performance in the teaching of Business Education?
3. Does teacher’s qualification also affect students’ performance in effective teaching of Business Education?
4. How teaching methods in Business Education does affects students’ performance ineffective teaching of Business Education?

Hypothesis

1. Students attitude Business Education affects their performance
2. Teacher’s qualification also affect the students performance in Business Education
3. Teacher’s teaching method in Business Education affect students performance

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to find out the solutions to the factors associated with mass failure of students in Business Education.

Significance of Study

The teaching of Business Education has not been as effective as it ought to be. It is therefore necessary to diagnose the various factors responsible for the mass failure of students and proper means by which the anomalies could be arrested. The importance of Business Education in the life of man need to be over emphasized, therefore if the subject is not effectively taught, the rudiment that are necessary for development of the basic concept of English language would be lacking at the secondary schools level and this could permeate the other state of the nation’s educational level. It is believed that the importance of Business Education if well understood and all the factors responsible for its unhealthy development are quickly nipped on the bud it would be possible to build a Business Education culture oriented society which will augur well for the healthy development of the nation

Limitation of Study

To carry out a project such as this there are bound to be procedural and methodological flaws inherent in the item developed human biases are likely to aggravate the internal weakness that are likely to exist however, conscious effort will be made to evolve method that will control for such extraneous influences in order to ensure the validity and reliability of the study

It is also expected that distance, times, finance and lack of human co-operation can pose serious threats to the successful execution of this project to this end it is hoped that every effort will be made to minimize, if not totally eliminating such threats and steps taken be highlighted to serve as a guide to those who may wish to replicate the project.

Chapter Five

Conclusions

On-going analysis of the challenges that face postsecondary business education should continue for vital reasons. These institutions bear a central mission in the training of business managers. In spite of the advancements that business schools have made in the century of their existence, much is left in improving the outcomes of training of business managers, as expressed by Khurana (1997): “From the historical perspective, business schools have evolved over the century and a quarter of their existence into their own intellectual and institutional antithesis, in a process of development that is, as yet, little understood and generating consequences that we are only now beginning to comprehend and reckon with” p. 4 Perspectives from management science, sociology, and economics may comprise a useful conceptual framework that will provide a more thorough understanding of the problems at hand.
While some analytical discussions presented addressed some of the questions surrounding business education and the trajectory that it should take, alternative approaches are needed to offer a comprehensive explanation. These include addressing the following questions:

1. In what ways are the tensions between the economic marketplace and the academy manifested in the curriculum of business schools at research universities?
2. Are there substantial differences between the ways business schools at research universities and at master’s institutions respond to the demand of business? If so, what are these differences and how do the two types of higher education institutions respond?
3. What are the differences if any between how public business schools at research universities and master’s institution finance their operations; how do these differ from financing of operations at private universities; what are the implications of these different approaches?
4. Are business graduates satisfied with the education they receive in online and distance learning programs? Are they able to meet the business challenges as well as their peers in full-time programs?
5. Does the mission statement and goals of business schools impact the direction that it selects in adding business courses and program offerings? How well do business schools follow the ideology embedded in their mission statement?

All of the questions aforementioned present an opportunity for additional research in the field. This research will help inform the stakeholders of business education on improvements that will guide the discipline in the future.
