Factors Affecting The Performance Of Computer Science Students In Junior Secondary School (A Case Study Of Enugu North Local Government Area Of Enugu State)


Abstract


This research work sough to assess the factors affecting the performance of computer science students in junior secondary school using a case study of Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State. The problems identified were teaching methods and inadequate techniques, unconducive environment for teaching and learning of computer science, the teachers’ knowledge of the subject matter, unavailability qualified computer science teachers and textbooks, lack of computer systems and their accessories. The population of the study comprised all the Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-JSS III) Students in public (Government-Owned) Secondary Schools in Enugu North Local Government Area. The sample for the study was 200 students drawn from the population using random sampling technique. The number of schools used was ten (10) public secondary schools. The study utilized a self-structured questionnaire for acquiring information from respondents. The results from the research questionnaires given to the respondents showed that in all the research questions that most of respondents agreed to the stated problems. We were also able to discover that inadequate teaching methods and techniques, unavailability of qualified computer science teachers and textbooks also constitute those problems found in the teaching and learning of computer science.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Computer science education as it was stipulated by the National policy on education (2004) in Nigeria is one of pre-vocational subjects in the junior secondary schools. The aim and objectives of the federal government in these pre-vocational subjects mostly is that at the end of Nine years of passing through it should posses an appropriate level of literacy, numeracy, communication, manipulative and problems solving skills in order to be employable and useful to oneself and the society at large. According to Abimbola (1998) the use of computer in our educational sector was a growing phenomenon, because searching for work in internet requires the knowledge of computer. The use of computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) in Education also requires in-depth knowledge of computer. According to Olaitan (2000) he stated, in recognition of the prominent role of information and communication technology (ICT) in educational system requires the knowledge of computers. Since our schools are sweeping along on the incoming tide of new teaching techniques. The old methods used in teaching and learning of computer science are becoming increasingly inadequate. Therefore this work is an attempt to find out the possible solution to all these problems in the study of computer science.

According to Webster’s comprehensive dictionary (2004) problem is any pressing circumstance or a preposition in which some operation is required. According to Oxfords advanced learners dictionary (2000) problem is any doubtful matter that requires a solution. Problem according to Omemma (2009) is a condition that requires a given solution. In our own opinion, problem can be seen as a difficult situation or a doubtful matter that requires a given solution. Solution according to oxford Advanced dictionary (2000) is seen as a means by which the unknown is made to be known. In Webster’s comprehensive dictionary (2004) it is seen as the act of solving a problem. According to Okwor (2002) solution is a situation that put a problem to a final stop. In our own opinion we believe that solution is a process by which a difficult matter or situation is revealed. National policy on education (2004) regarded teaching and learning as a process by which information and knowledge is transferred. It is also a process by which worthwhile values are shared (Ocho 1998).

Teaching learning according to Webster’s comprehensive dictionary (2004) is the act of obtaining knowledge from instruction. From our own view, teaching-learning is seen as a process by which worthwhile knowledge and idea are been transferred in form of a given instruction between people. According to Abimbola (1998) in Nigeria Journal of technical education computer science is a systematic systematic study of an electronic device which is manufactured to accept an ordered sequence of instructions given to it in an appropriate language. Abdullahi (2004) says that computer science is one of the science subjects that deals with study of a machine that can receive instructions, recalls these instructions, carry out the instructions and gives a feedback on its actions. According to oxford Advanced learners dictionary (2000) computer sciences is the study of computers and how they can be used.

In our own view, computer science is a subject that deals with appreciation and application of computers. Junior secondary school as it was stipulated by National policy on education (2004) in Nigeria is an educational institution for the children between the ages of 11-13years No wonder the world educational encyclopedia volume 3 says that government regards junior secondary school as an educational institution where the necessary infrastructure and training for the integration of information, communication and technology (ICT) in the schools.

At this level of education, it is believed that the necessary skills and ideas have been acquired, but the standard of education is fast declining. Ejili (2002) stated that critical appraisal of the falling standard shows that there are several variables responsible for this. The world is fast becoming a global village. For that the use of computer in educational system is now a growing phenomenon. The dependent variable for this study is the solution, where problem is the independent variable. This is because the solution depends the problems which are encountered in the teaching and learning of computer science in the junior secondary school.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

The growing need for computer literacy has made it imperative that increased attention be given to the study of computer at all level of education especially in secondary schools. The researcher observation on junior secondary schools in Enugu urban area of Enugu State shows that laboratory, computer and instructional materials required for learning of computer science are not only inadequate but have not been fully utilized. Further interaction with student has shown that they are not taught computer science regularly like any other subject due to shortage of computer teachers. However, one of the reasons why computer teachers are in short supply is that when teachers with computer qualification are employed, they prefer to teach mathematics rather than computer subject. Most of these computer teachers have been exposed only to the theoretical aspect of their programme while little or no attention was paid to the practical aspect of their programme during their years of training. (Aghadino, 2014).

It therefore means that without proper improvement on the gaps facing computer science in junior secondary schools in Enugu urban area of Enugu State, Secondary School Students upon graduation are bound to be completely obsolete in our contemporary society where knowledge of computer has become a prerequisite for employment, interview and in some cases for promotion. It is on this basis that the researcher deems it necessary to conduct a study on the factors affecting the performance of computer science students in junior secondary school using a case study of Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.


1.3 Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to assess the factors affecting the performance of computer science students in junior secondary school using a case study of Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State. Specifically, the objectives of the study include to;

  1. To find out student-related factors affecting performance of computer science students in junior secondary school
  2. To determine School-related factors affecting performance of computer science students in junior secondary school
  3. To find out strategies in improving learning and teaching of computer in Junior Secondary Schools

1.4 Research Question

The following research questions are formulated to guide this research:

  1. What are the student-related factors affecting performance of computer science students in junior secondary school?
  2. What are the school-related factors affecting performance of computer science students in junior secondary school?
  3. What are the strategies to improve learning and teaching of computer in Junior Secondary Schools?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • HO1 There is no significant relationship between student-related factors and performance of computer science students in junior secondary school
  • HO2 There is no significant relationship between school-related factors and performance of computer science students in junior secondary school

1.6 Significance of the Study

The researcher hopes that the result of this research work shall be beneficial to the following: educational administrators, computer science teachers, learners which include secondary school students and future researchers. The findings of the study will help to make our Educational Administrators see the need to have qualified computer science teachers to handle the subject effectively for the benefits of the students and society at large. It will also help to sensitize the educational administrators to appreciate the need to make available the necessary materials, examples chalkboard, graph, audio-visual materials, etc that will enhance effective learning of computer science if they are not available.

This study will be of need directly to the Computer science Teachers’ Association, drawing attention to the need for them to adopt more appropriate teaching method in order to bring about the desirable experience in the learners.
It will be useful for learners to identify the factors affecting the teaching and learning of computer science. It will help to produce sound computer scientists that will function well in the society. This work will serve as a source of encouragement to students and teachers that will come across it. It is hoped that the findings of this study would also form the basis for further research work by future researchers on this issues. This work adds great knowledge to already existing literature in computer education and education in general thereby serve as an aid to future researchers.


1.7 Scope of Study

This study is focused on the factors affecting the performance of computer science students in junior secondary school. The study covered junior secondary schools in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.


1.8 Limitation of the Study

Financial constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Factors:

Refers to the variables that act as challenges in the teaching and learning of computer science that could also influence their performance in the subject

Computer Science:

Is the study of computers and computing as well as their theoretical and practical applications. Computer science applies the principles of mathematics, engineering, and logic to a plethora of functions, including algorithm formulation, software and hardware development, and artificial intelligence.

Academic Performance:

Is the measurement of student achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation rates and results from standardized tests.


1.10 Organisation of the Study

This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter one included the background of the study, research problem, research objectives and questions as well as limitation of the study. Chapter two contains the literature review. Chapter three includes the methodology and study area. Chapter Four contains the results and discussion of key findings of the study. Chapter Five finally looks at the summary, conclusions, and recommendations based on the findings.

5.0 Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Summary

The main purpose of this study was to assess the factors affecting the performance of computer science students in junior secondary school using a case study of Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State. In an attempt to focus the study, three research questions were posited to guide the study. Some published and unpublished works of earlier researchers were consulted.To obtain answers to the questions a fifteen (15) item questionnaire was formulated based on the research questions and was administered to two hundred (200) respondents upon whose responses data was collected and analyzed. The outcome of the analysis based on the responses of the respondents to the questionnaire items revealed that: There are student related factors that causes difficulty in teaching computer science. There are school-related factors that cause difficulty in teaching of computer science in secondary schools. Proffer corrective strategies for improving the teaching of computer science in secondary schools in Enugu North Local Government Area. Therefore, it was concluded that it was concluded that there are some basic strategies that could be adopted in other to improve the teaching of computer science in secondary schools.


5.2 Conclusion

The study concludes that there are some basic strategies that could be adopted in order to improve the teaching of computer science in secondary schools. The study is of the view that computer science should provide sound basis for further training in computer science at the tertiary level of education thus should be relied upon to enable students acquire the basic skills and knowledge needed to either secure a job and earn a living or to pursue further studies in the area computer and information science. Evidence from the study also revealed that funding strategies for computer science could be used in improving the teaching of computer science in secondary schools. It is also found that strategies for improving the availability and supply of instructional facilities as well as teaching methodologies strategies could be used to enhance the teaching of computer science in secondary schools. It is evident in the study that when students are adequately trained under an improved learning environment where instructional facilities are provided and qualified teachers engaged for the services of teaching and learning applying by proper teaching techniques there is no doubt that the performance of students in computer science will improve considerably, and as such they are bound to develop a remarkable interest in computer science and develop the necessary skills required to secure and succeed in the workplace.


5.3 Recommendation

Based on the findings of the study, the researcher hereby makes the following recommendations:

  1. School administrators (Education Secretaries and Principals) should ensure that computer teachers are sponsored on retraining programmes at least twice a year through workshops, seminars and conferences to enable them learn the modern technological skills in their chosen field of endeavour.
  2. The school administrators should as a matter of urgency liase with private sectors to provide computers and other instructional materials needed for teaching of computer science.
  3. Parents through the PTA and other major stakeholders of our education should assists our secondary schools by donating instructional facilities like laptops, desktop computers, multimedia, generating sets, internet etc. to enable students practice and acquire the skills of computing.
