Abstract


Refrigeration is term used to denote the maintenance of a body at a temperature lower than that of its surroundings. The applications of refrigeration are many and varied. In addition to the common applications of refrigerationin the manufacture of ice, in the preservation of foods, in air-conditioning filed, and in the creation of skating rinks, the refrigeration effect is also used in the presentation of blood plasma, in the low-temperature treatment of metals and in the liquefaction of gasses. Each application requires a different temperature for the refrigerated space. This project adopts the basic principle of refrigeration to construct a portable deep freezer The historical development of refrigeration system was discussed along with types of refrigeration system, its impact in our life, how it works and so on. Materials for each component were carefully selected. troubleshooting was included in this report to guide the user on repair and maintenance procedures the total the length of the deep freezer is 99 0mm while the base of the bottom is 750mm, the cabinet cover is 1200mm and his side is 750mm. the special feature are aluminum, thermostat, evaporator pipe, drier cooling fan, polystyrene and TL danfos compressor while the cooling temperature is 125°f

Chapter One


Introduction

1.1 History of Refrigeration

Before the invention of mechanical and thermal refrigeration system, ice houses were used to provide cool storage for most of the year placed near fresh water lakes or packed with snow and ice during the winter, they were once very common (Pauken mike 1999). Natural means are still used to cool, also mountain sides run-off from melting snow is a convenient way to cool drinks, and during the winter, one can keep milk fresh much longer just by keeping it out doors.

The first known artificial refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen at the university at Glasgow in 1948. Between 1805, when Oliver Evens designed the first refrigeration machine that vapor instead of liquid and in 1902 when Willis Harvilland Carrier demonstrated the air conditioner.

The first practical mechanical regeneration system was invented in 1844 by an American Physician John Corrie to cool sick room in a floride hospital. Shortly afterward, an Australian James Harrison introduces vapor compression refrigeration to the meat packing industries.

A thermally powered ammonia absorption refrigerating system was development by Ferdinard Carre in France in 1859. Carres refrigerating were widely used in industries.


1.2 Important of Refrigeration Application

There are many importance of refrigeration that are widely used. The importance are listed below;

  1. For ice making.
  2. For transportation of food above and below freezing point.
  3. For chemical and related industries.
  4. For medical and surgical aids.
  5. Processing of food product and beverage.
  6. On reforming and synthetic rubber manufacturing.
  7. Freezing of food product.
Disadvantages of Refrigeration.

Many, system still use HCFC (hydrochlorofluro carbon) refrigerants, which contributed to depletion of earth ozone layer in countries adhering to the mensal protocol.

  • HCFC are due to be phased out and are largely being replaced by ozone friendly HCF (Hydro Flurocarbon).
  • System, using HCF refrigerating tend to be slightly less efficiently than using HCFC.

1.3 Freezer

Practical household refrigerators were introduced in 1915 and gained under acceptance in the limited stated in the 1930s as prices fell and non-toxic, non flammable synthesis refrigerants such as Freon 0-R-12 were introduced. It is notable that while 60% of household in the US (United States) owned refrigerator by the 1930s, it was not until 40years later, i.e. 1970 that the refrigerator achieved a smaller level or penetrative in the United Kingdom.


1.4 Impact of Life Cycle

The refrigerator allows the modern family to keep fresh food much longer than before. This along with the modern super market, without a sizeable garden on which to grow vegetable and raise animals, a vastly more varied diet and improved health resulting from improved nutrition. Daily products meats, fish, poultry, and vegetable can be kept refrigerated in the same space within the kitchen (although stuffs for reason of hygiene). (Albert Einsten (2001))
The refrigerator lets people eat more salads fish and vegetable, without having to own a garden or an orchard. Exotic food stuff from far-off countries that have been imported by means of domestic refrigeration freezer allows households to buy food in bulk. It can be eaten at leisure and bulk purchase saves money (see economical of scale). Ice cream, a popular commodity of the 20th century, could previously be obtained by travelling distance to where the product was made fresh and had to be eaten on the spot. Now it is a common food item. Ice on demand not only adds to the enjoyment of cold drinks, but it is useful for first aid and for cold packs that can be kept frozen for picnics, or in case of emergency.


1.5 Aims and Objectives

The project can be used to demonstrate how the various part of a refrigeration system function in addition to what was taught during lecture. The project also works as an act to a step forward in educating the student about refrigeration, most especially those who are interest in the technology of refrigeration.
Also, storing and preservation of food can be achieved with the use of the project.

Recommendation and Conclusion

5.1 Recommendation

  1. The use of electric voltage regulator (stablizer0 recommended when using the freezer.
  2. It is also recommended that the freezer should be used for domestic purposes.
  3. Preventive maintenance should be carried out as at when due.
  4. The project is unable to modification.
  5. The project is a very good size, it improves students knowledge of thermodynamic engineering therefore it is recommended that this type of project should be continuous.

5.2 Conclusion

Refrigerator is one of the applications of thermodynamics, many other areas of Engineering are involved in the construction and operation of the freezer.

The construction and assembly of this freezer has really exposed us extensively to various area of engineering such as fabrication process like bending, welding, joining of metal using oxyacetylene gas welding machine, in-depth understanding of the workings of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and so on.
