Abstract


This study was carried out to examine the mobile information technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria. The study was specifically set to examine the accessibility of Mobile Information and Technology as a factor for the prevalence of internet crime, assess the forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria, determine whether the use of mobile information and technology have contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria, and find out whether the Nigerian government have contributed to effectively towards mitigating the high rate of internet crime in her society. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of civil servants in staff of EFCC in Lagos state. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 60 respondents and all were received and validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency and mean score tables, while the hypotheses was tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the accessibility of Mobile Information Technology is a significant factor for the prevalence of internet crime.. Furthermore, the study showed that the forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria include; cyber terrorism, fraud – identity theft, drug trafficking deals, and financial fraud. The study recommends that there is need to develop a system which will enable any user to immediately log on from any internet enabled device to report cybercrime cases. This system should have interfaces that will enable concerned individuals or organizations to supply information that is crucial to the crime in focus. This system should capture the complaint and forwards it to the intelligent tracking System. To mention but a few.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

A cell phone or a mobile device ICT refers to a tiny, portable computer equipment with a display screen and a little keyboard that may be carried in one’s hand or stored in a pocket (Gyongyi, 2005). To put it another way, their functioning isn’t limited to a single spot. Nokia, LG, Motorola Mobility, BlackBerry, Samsung, and Apple are just a handful of the companies that make these gadgets. A portable computing device features an operating system (OS) that allows it to execute a variety of application software, most often referred to as apps. Wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth, and the Geographic Positioning System (GPS) are all standard features on most portable devices, allowing users to connect to the Internet and other Bluetooth-enabled devices while maintaining a consistent battery charge. Mobile phones, Smartphones, and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are common examples of mobile devices (Hemraj ,2012). (Wikipedia). Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a term that is commonly used interchangeably with Information Technology (IT). ICT is a term that encompasses the role of unified communications networks and the integration of telecommunications (telephone lines and wireless signals), computers and all forms of networks, as well as enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-visual systems, which enable users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information to meet society’s day-to-day needs. Cybercrimes, on the other hand, are offenses committed against individuals or groups of individuals with the intent to intentionally harm the victim’s reputation, cause physical or mental harm to the victim directly or indirectly, or deprive someone of what is rightfully theirs, using modern telecommunication networks such as the Internet and mobile phones. Such acts have the potential to jeopardize a country’s security and economic stability. Cybercrime is defined as crimes committed against a person, an organization, or a country using a computer system [Hassan, 2012]. The whole African continent is increasingly reliant on modern information technology and the internet, as well as new media, to conduct business, manage industrial operations, and participate in personal contact, among other advantages that link us to the developed world. While mobile technology and gadgets increase efficiency, productivity, and communication, they also expose individuals who want to and thrive in new settings to risk. The internet’s rapid expansion and widespread adoption have resulted in an increase in security risks. Cyberspace provides limitless chances for economic, social, and educational activity, as well as a safe sanctuary for society miscreants to carry out their nefarious operations. Technology is progressing at a breakneck pace, allowing users to access the internet through a variety of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Even the tiniest phone can now connect to the internet, making it vulnerable to online crime, often known as cybercrime (Maitanmi ,2013).


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Mobile phones are now widely recognized as a genuinely widespread computing platform that allows individuals to stay in contact with one another while also managing daily chores [Barry, 1997]. With the introduction of less priced smart phones, a lot of effort has gone into developing basic applications to increase the usefulness of these devices for the general public. Cybercriminals’ techniques include cooperation with security officers and bank officials, local and worldwide networking, and the use of voodoo, or traditional supernatural power, according to investigations into the operations of online criminals in Nigeria (Ayo,2010). It was also discovered that the majority of internet crime engaged in activities such as online dating and buying and selling under a false name, among other things (Gbadamosi ,2017). Internet crime may take many forms, including death, disgrace, and loss of work. Internet crime has an influence that is not confined to the victim; it also has an impact on society. Loss of money, lost time, tarnished reputation, and lower productivity are just a few of the economic implications of internet crime [Ringwelski, 2008].


1.3 Objective of the Study

The primary objective of the study is as follows

  1. To examine the accessibility of Mobile Information and Technology as a factor for the prevalence of internet crime.
  2. To assess the forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria.
  3. To determine whether the use of mobile information and technology have contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria.
  4. To find out whether the Nigerian government have contributed to effectively towards mitigating the high rate of internet crime in her society.

1.4 Research Questions

The following questions have been prepared for this study

  1. Is the accessibility of Mobile Information Technology a significant factor for the prevalence of internet crime?
  2. What are the forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria?
  3. What is the extent mobile information technology usage has contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria?
  4. Has the Nigerian government contributed effectively towards mitigating the high rate of internet crime in her society?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Ho: The use of mobile information and technology has not contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria.
  • Ha: The use of mobile information and technology has contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study focuses on mobile information and information technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria. Hence the study will be significant to the government as it will help them devise strategies with which it can curb internet fraud among Nigerian youth.

The study will be beneficial to the academic community as will contribute to the existing literature.


1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will examine the accessibility of Mobile Information and Information Technology as a factor for the prevalence of internet crime. The study will also evaluate the effect of Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria. The study will further find out if there is a government law that guides the use of information technology in other to curb internet fraud. Lastly, the study will find out strategies that can be used to reduce or stop internet fraud among Nigerian youth. Hence this study will be delimited to Delta state university.


1.8 Limitation of the Study

Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

Moreover, the case study method utilized in the study posed some challenges to the investigator including the possibility of biases and poor judgment of issues. However, the investigator relied on respect for the general principles of procedures, justice, fairness, objectivity in observation and recording, and weighing of evidence to overcome the challenges.


1.8 Definition of Terms

Mobile Information:

Systems that rely on wireless communications and support mobile applications that typically run on wireless devices such as smartphones and mobile phones.

Information Technology:

Use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving, and sending information.

Internet Crime:

The use of Internet services or software with Internet access to defraud victims or to otherwise take advantage of them.


1.10 Organization of the Studies

The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the examination of mobile information technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.


5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was on the examination of mobile information technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria. The study is was specifically set to examine the accessibility of Mobile Information and Technology as a factor for the prevalence of internet crime, assess the forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria, determine whether the use of mobile information and technology have contributed to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria, and find out whether the Nigerian government have contributed to effectively towards mitigating the high rate of internet crime in her society.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 60 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are staff of EFCC in Lagos state.


5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that;

  1. The accessibility of Mobile Information Technology is a significant factor for the prevalence of internet crime.
  2. The forms of internet crime perpetrated using Mobile Information Technology and its influence on the prevalence of internet crime in Nigeria include; cyber terrorism, fraud – identity theft, drug trafficking deals, and financial fraud.
  3. The usage of mobile information technology has contributed highly to the surge of internet crime in Nigeria.
  4. The Nigerian government have contributed to effectively towards mitigating the high rate of internet crime in her society.

5.4 Recommendations

Based on the conclusion drawn, the following recommendations were made:

  1. There is need to develop a system which will enable any user to immediately log on from any internet enabled device to report cybercrime cases. This system should have interfaces that will enable concerned individuals or organizations to supply information that is crucial to the crime in focus. This system should capture the complaint and forwards it to the intelligent tracking System.
  2. The government should immediately work on laws concerning cybercrime and provide the appropriate law enforcement agencies with required instruments to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes.
  3. National Cyber Security Awareness Program (NCSAP) should endeavour to sponsor media (internet, radio and television) to strengthen and intensify education through awareness creation in order to have cybercrime free society since these are the students‘ common source of knowledge on cybercrime with focus on the youth which includes senior high students. This can educate the public on the act, effects and other consequences of cybercrime to every citizen found anywhere in the community, school, mosques, churches and homes.
