Epileptic Power Supply And Its Impact On The Academic Performance Of University Students
Abstract
In this study, our focus was on the Epileptic power supply and its impact on the academic performance of University Students. Students of the University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State as case study. The study is was specifically focused on examining the influence of epileptic power supply on students’ academic performance; examining the effect of epileptic power supply on lecturers’ academic activities; investigating the influence of epileptic power supply on environmental factors; determining the influence of epileptic power supply on result processing and examining the influence of epileptic power supply on students’ study habits.
The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 100 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are Students of the University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State.
The result also showed that power outage affects students study habits and learning experiences negatively as students cannot study well, group discussions and tutorial classes are cancelled or rescheduled due to power outbreak.

Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Energy is the capacity of a physical system to do work. Mbalisi and Off of (2015), Cunningham and Saigo (2001), Sodhi (2005), Owate, Nte and Nna (2005) see energy as ability to do work.
Power is the rate of transferring of energy and so power and energy are used interchangeably in daily conversation. In the practical sense of it, the amount of power obtained from any mechanical system depends on the amount of energy possessed by such system. Hence, a system with high energy will generate a high power; therefore, energy is related to power. The European Commission’s Research on Energy has also shown that energy is very essential to the quality of man’s everyday life. It is evident across the centuries that man is totally dependent and reliant on energy for work and personal life. In fact, the use of energy cuts st across all sectors. The dependence on energy is even more visible in the 21 century with the heavy use of electrical energy which is virtually applicable to all spheres of life ranging from home use, to entertainment, education, recreation and industrial use. The availability of energy is usually linked to prosperity and efficiency and a higher standard of living in every sector of the economy.
The availability of electrical power is a panacea for the provision of services such as that will be of benefit to students. Students’ academic performance suffers as a result of power outages.
(Aremu, Adeyemi 2011) defined Power as the pace at which energy is transferred, thus the terms power and energy are used interchangeably in everyday discourse. In practice, the quantity of power obtained from any mechanical system is proportional to the amount of energy held by such system. As a result, a system with a high energy will produce a high power; hence, energy is connected to power. The European Commission’s Energy Research has also revealed that energy is critical to the quality of man’s daily existence. Over the decades, it has been clear that man is completely dependent and dependant on energy energy is even more obvious in the twenty-first century, with the widespread use of electrical energy in practically every aspect of life, from household usage to entertainment, education, amusement, and industrial use. Power availability is typically associated with prosperity, efficiency, and a higher quality of life in all sectors of the economy (Aremu, Adeyemi 2011).
The Power Holding Company of Nigeria –PHCN (formerly the National Electric Power Authority –NEPA) and (now privatized) is statutorily required to create and distribute power for residential, industrial, governmental institutions, and other commercial applications. PHCN is a subsidiary of the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel. PHCN’s performance has been heavily criticized throughout the years due to the low and deteriorating quality of services provided to its clients. According to Aberie, Fayomi, Opera and Pamda (2011), energy generation and availability in Nigeria fell to 1600MW in 1999 from 5,876 MW installed capacity, with just 19 of the 79 generating units operational.
It is clear from the following that Nigerians, particularly Nigerian colleges and students, are suffering from energy poverty and crises. For example, Akpama, Okoro, and Chikuni (2008) found that the University of Benin has been dealing with energy difficulties from its establishment and continues to do so. Despite Nigeria’s rich energy resources, about 40% of the people still lacks access to electricity (UNDP, 2001; Ajanaku, 2007; Adegbamigbe, 2007). Poor electricity supply is characterized by blackouts and widespread reliance on self-generated electricity, despite government claims of 16 billion dollars in investments in the sector by the Obasanjo administration (Akinyunola 2011). As a result, Nigerian higher institutions are unable to sufficiently provide energy, which is essential in the everyday operation of the school.
This development poses a difficulty to students since it reduces productivity and has an impact on academic achievement.
Students’ academic performance is an important aspect of education (Rono, 2013). It is regarded as the pivot around which the entire educational system revolves. According to Narad and Abdullah (2016), academic performance of students influences the success or failure of any academic institution. Signh,Malik, and Signh (2016) also stated that student academic achievement has a direct influence on a country’s socioeconomic growth. Similarly, Farooq, Chaudhry, Shafiq, and Behanu (2011) claimed that academic achievement of students serves as a foundation for knowledge acquisition and skill development. Furthermore, Akinyunola,(2011) underlined that academic success of pupils is the primary concern of all instructors. According to Narad and Abdullah (2016), academic performance is the information learned that is measured by a teacher through marks and/or educational goals set by students and instructors to be achieved within a particular time period. They further stated that these objectives are measured by continual evaluation or examination outcomes.
Epileptic power supply has been one of the major challenges faced by students and this has greatly affected their performance in school.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Every sector in Nigeria has experienced epileptic supply of power since time immemorial. This problem has resulted to low output in all the sectors specifically the sector of education which is the bedrock of all development. Individuals have made diverse efforts in alleviating this menace; one of such is the use of generator/ which led to the increase in price of such equipment because of the high demand as well as to the high demand for fuel to power the generator. People from every facets of life have been affected. Students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions have been adversely affected as they need electricity to read, search for materials, learn and so on.
The Federal Government has over the years, kept making promises to effect a change in the energy sector but this promise has never been fulfilled. Over the years, Nigerian students have voiced out their wish to be like their contemporaries in the western world. They wish to make use of the latest technology during learning and research, wish to have their lectures with the use of internet etc. This wishes cannot be fulfilled with the current epileptic power supply in Nigeria.
1.3 Objective of the Study
Epileptic power supply and its impact on the academic performance of University Students is the primary aim of this study. Other objectives are:
- To determine the influence of epileptic power supply on students’ academic performance
- To examine the effect of epileptic power supply on lecturers’ academic activities
- To investigate the influence of epileptic power supply on environmental factors
- To determine the influence of epileptic power supply on result processing
- To examine the influence of epileptic power supply on students’ study habits
1.4 Research Question
The following questions will be used for this research.
- Is there any significance influence of epileptic power supply on students’ academic performance?
- Is there any significant effect of epileptic power supply on lecturers’ academic activities?
- Is there any significant influence of epileptic power supply on environmental factors?
- Is there any significant influence of epileptic power supply on result processing?
- Is there any significant influence of epileptic power supply on students’ study habits?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
- Ho: There is a significant relationship between epileptic power supply and academic performance in university
- Hi: There is a significant relationship between epileptic power supply and academic performance in university
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to the energy industry as they will know the impacts power supply has on the academic performance of students. It will also be beneficial to school administrators as the findings will let them know what policies should be put in place to enhance power supply in their respective schools.
Finally, this study will serve as existing material for scholars to carry on further research and it will also be used for future references.
1.7 Scope of the study
This study will focus on Epileptic power supply and its impact on the academic performance of University Students. It will also focus on the challenges encountered by students in their academics due to epileptic power supply and it will proffer possible solutions to these challenges. This study will use students of the University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State as enrolled participants.
1.8 Limitation of Study
Finance,inadequate materials and time constraint were the challenges the researchers encountered during the course of the study.

1.10 Organizations of the Study
The chapter one consist of the introductory part of the study which includes the study background, the statement of the research problem, the study objective and scope of the study.
The second chapter is a critical review of other literatures relevant to the study and its objectives including the theoretical framework for the study. While the third chapter is methods of data collection, sampling and data analysis used in conducting the study. The fourth chapter centres around the research findings including an analysis of how it relates to previous findings. The fifth chapter consists of the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations base on the study objectives.

5.1 Introduction
This chapter summarizes the findings on the Epileptic power supply and its impact on the academic performance of University Students. Students of the University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State as case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.2 Summary of the Study

5.3 Conclusions
With respect to the analysis and the findings of this study, the following conclusions emerged;
The result also showed that power outage affects students study habits and learning experiences negatively as students cannot study well, group discussions and tutorial classes are cancelled or rescheduled due to power outbreak. Most students study in the evening after normal classroom lectures when the sun had set and most often these classes do not hold because of power outage. This result is in line with the findings of Noble (2006) who reported that students’ performance is highly correlated with study habit and learning experiences. The moment power outage prevents students from studying well, their learning experiences will be poor and the resultant effect is poor performance. Epileptic power supply made a total contribution of 99.8% of the variables of academic activities. The pre-service teachers are of high opinion that Epileptic power supply have influence on academic activities in Universities. This mean that power outage paralyses academic activities in the University; as the library staff perform skeletal work, internet facilities are totally down; assignments and project reports cannot be written and submitted , laboratories, classrooms , departmental and lecturers’ offices are not conducive for academic activities. These findings are corroborated by the findings of Amadi (2015) and Omoleke (2011) who found that power outage affects educational sector negatively and retards national development of anation.
5.4 Recommendation
Based on the findings the researcher recommends that;
The Federal government of Nigeria should wake up from slumber to find a practical solution to the power outage in Nigeria with the adoption of the provision of financial support to the PHCN to establish a domestic electrical engineering industry to combat obsolete equipment rather than relying absolutely on external technology.
Probably, this will bring improvement in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity to consumers. This aligns with the recommendation of Iweribor (1994).
