Electronic Media And Teachers Effectiveness In Public Primary School In Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State
Abstract
This study was carried out to examine electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. The study was carried out to find out whether there an adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State, ascertain whether the use of electronic media improves teacher’s teaching skill, determine whether the use of electronic media enhances effective teaching and learning in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State, and determine whether the use of electronic media improves teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of primary schools teachers in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 41 respondents and 35 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. While the hypotheses were tested using Pearson correlation statistical tool, SPSS v23. The result of the findings reveals that there is no adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the use of electronic media improve teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance. Therefore, it is recommended that Govt. /management should provide adequate fund to the schools for purchasing these electronic media; it would be better if separate fund must be provided in the annual budget of the schools; they should also arrange for the supply of good and new electronic media. Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Primary school pupils are children of tender age between four to ten years. This is a time when the child becomes conscious of television and movie characters. Historically, familiar characters have attracted children from an early age. The expansion of children’s media in recent years through sources such as cable TV and video games has greatly increased the number and variety of such characters and their related toys. The electronic media are designed to expand the pupil’s knowledge of society and the larger world, develop creativity, encourage problem-solving, roleplaying, and improve literacy and vocabulary.
A typical example of such a media application is the flipped classroom. The flipped classroom is a classroom where homework is done by the pupils at school and school work is done at home. The school work is the recorded lessons’ videos adopted or adapted by the teachers on all the topics in any subject of interest. The pupils will need to watch the video at home online or offline through electronic media like internet, TV with DVD player in the absence of the teacher. Then, do the homework (assignments) in the class in the presence of the teacher who will render assistance in the area of difficulties and monitor their learning progress (Yusuf, Makinde & Malik, 2017).
Lestage (2009), pointed out that technology can never replace the human mind, but it can help expand it. It is duty of the teachers that to use electronic media relevant to the lesson and students; wrong use and selection of the teaching media will be the wastage of time and energy for nothing. Mathew (2013) stated that it is the responsibility of the teacher to use electronic media to make the teaching-learning process effective. Shamsideen (2016) opined that teaching and learning activities are interesting when electronic media are used effectively and efficiently in a classroom-teaching situation. It is universal fact that children learn best by observing and copying the behaviors. Sunder (2010) stated that leaning is more effective when sensory experiences are stimulated. Electronic media stimulate the behaviors of the students towards learning. The learning experience is made quite relevant, effective and meaningful by these medias as these motivate the child’s learning by arousing his interest in a number of ways. Dike (1989) found that electronic media add clarity to the topic taught and make learning more interesting. Pandit (2009) stipulated that electronic media provide a rich variety of sensory experience to amplify and reinforce the concepts that have been presented in a textbook and develop teaching skills. Sunder (2010), stated that electronic media strengthens teaching skill, attract and retained learner’s interest and attention and make teaching learning process more interactive and knowledge centered.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
At primary level vocabulary of a child is not developed enough to understand the lectures given by teachers in classroom. At this level communication is generally one sided, children generally do not reply to the teacher due to the fear and hesitation. Such type of situation is not favourable for learning, usually it inhibits the learning. At primary level teaching can be effective when it activates all the sensory organs of child. Using electronic media can be useful for making learning easy, effective and permanent. The role of teachers is very important in using technology because on one side if it is used appropriately, it can make the learning interesting, but on other side if not used properly then it can distract the mind of young ones. In Nigeria teachers are not adequately trained in a way to make use of electronic media. Paucity of funds and attitude of teachers, parents, school management and Government is making the problem wider. Only few private schools are trying the concept of electronic media in teaching but only limited students belonging to elite class can approach to them due to their heavy fee structure. In view of the above, this study simply seek to examine electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
The study will specifically;
- Find out whether there an adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
- Ascertain whether the use of electronic media improves teacher’s teaching skill.
- Determine whether the use of electronic media enhances effective teaching and learning in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
- Determine whether the use of electronic media improves teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will be anchored by the following question;
- Is there an adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State?
- Does the use of electronic media improve teacher’s teaching skill?
- Does the use of electronic media enhance effective teaching and learning in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State?
- Does the use of electronic media improve teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
- Ho: There is no significance relationship between the use of electronic media and teachers’ effectiveness in primary school.
- Ho: There is a significance relationship between the use of electronic media and teachers’ effectiveness in primary school.
1.6 Significance of the Study
Education is constantly challenged by the progressive nature of technology. Technology keep evolving speedily leaving some activities behind, formal education is therefore expected to meet up with the dynamics of technology.
Hence, this study will serve as an awareness tool for academic audience. The findings from this study will serve as reliable report for school administrators and education policy-makers in adopting and enacting activities and guidelines that aligns with recent trends in technology as it regards the improvement of primary school education.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The research focuses on electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. The study will cover some selected primary schools in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
This research project, like all human endeavors, had some challenges that threatened to derail the study’s completion. One of the reasons is that the time allotted for this work was so limited that the researcher did not have enough time to complete the task thoroughly. During data collection, the researcher also had to put forth extra effort to understand the respondents’ interview schedules, several of whom fell into the incomprehensible age group. Also, there were financial and transportation constraints to deal with. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, interview).
1.9 Definition of Terms
Media:
A media for learning and teaching or learning software. Media itself means a method of communication.
Educational Media:
Educational media refers to channels of communication that carry messages with an instructional purpose. They are usually utilized for the sole purpose of learning and teaching (Webcrawler, 2013).
Electronic Media:
These include audio media, visual media and audio-visual media, projected media and non-projected media.
Audio-Visual Aid:
Is an instructional device that can be heard as well as seen.
1.10 Organizations of the Study
The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms.
The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

5.1 Introduction
This chapter summarizes the findings on electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.2 Summary of the Study
In this study, our focus was to examine electronic media and teachers effectiveness in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State. The study was specifically carried out to find out whether there an adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State, ascertain whether the use of electronic media improves teacher’s teaching skill, determine whether the use of electronic media enhances effective teaching and learning in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State, and determine whether the use of electronic media improves teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance.
The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 35 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent were primary schools teachers in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
5.3 Conclusions
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher concluded that;
- There is no adequate provision of electronic media in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
- The use of electronic media improve teacher’s teaching skill.
- The use of electronic media enhance effective teaching and learning in public primary school in Ikeduru L.G.A Imo State.
- The use of electronic media improve teachers’ ability to stimulate pupils’ learning interest, and academic performance.
5.4 Recommendations
Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are proffered.
- Govt. /management should provide adequate fund to the schools for purchasing these electronic media; it would be better if separate fund must be provided in the annual budget of the schools; they should also arrange for the supply of good and new electronic media.
- Teacher should be provided training in- service or pre-service to make them acquaint and train in use of relevant electronic media in primary schools.
- Authorities of education make it mandatory for teachers to teach with the help of electronic media which should be pre-planned and under the keen supervision of the head of the school. Teachers should be instructed and motivated to use maximum electronic media during teaching.
- Curriculum planners should encourage the use of electronic medias by inculcating them in the educational syllabus of all levels of education.
