Effects Of Teachers Experience In The Academic Performance Of Students In Mathematics


Abstract


This research was conducted to look into effects of teachers experience in the academic performance of students in Mathematics. Five schools were used in IfakoIjaye local Government Area of Lagos state on the whole, Fifty students and twenty five teachers were interviewed using the questionnaires. It was found out that the problem arise from the skills and qualification of teachers. It is the opinion of the researcher that qualified personnel should be employed to teach Mathematics and Government should improve the working conditions of teachers, school, relevant textbooks and organization of seminars by Mathematics teacher association of Nigeria.


Chapter One


Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Mathematics is the science of structure, order, number, space and quantity . It is a relationship which revolves around the elementary practice of counting measuring and description of shapes and objects. From the social and economic perspective Mathematics is a key element and a day to day activity that every living human being unconsciously practices in one form or the other. From this perspective Mathematics is a subject of everyday application and communication tool per excellence. The indisputable fact is that any good student of Mathematics easily keys into other subjects of Mathematics easily keys into other subjects. This explains why any student who is good in Mathematics is found to be good in other subject.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Mathematics, as an area of study is not new both in Nigeria and elsewhere. What is new, however, is the teaching and learning of it as an integrated subject with the result that integrated Mathematics is yet to be firmly established in Nigerian schools Secondly, and more importantly, there is the problem of knowing how to organize and plan the Mathematics curriculum as well as develop the appropriate strategies for implementing this in schools.


1.3 Purpose of the Study

  1. To identify the problem of the secondary school teachers in the teaching of Mathematics.
  2. To find out if the problem is as a result of the teachers sex.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the problems of Mathematics teachers in secondary schools in the teaching of Mathematics?
  2. Are the problems due to lack of necessary indigenous textbooks and instructional materials?

1.5 Hypothesis

  • Ho: There is no significant difference between the teachers experience and students academic performance in secondary schools.
  • Hi: There is a significant difference between teachers attitude and students academic performance in secondary schools.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will help to identify the main problem faced by students in Mathematics, such as lack of qualified teachers, inadequate relevance textbooks, poor method used by the teachers, inadequate instructional materials, and problem of class size etc.


1.7 Delimitation of the Study

The study of the research will be restricted to only five secondary schools in Ifako Ijaye local government area and questionnaire will be used for the students to respond to.

  2. Ebenezer comprehensive high school
  3. Fagba junior secondary school
  4. Somori Grammar school
  5. Africa church Grammar school.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Simplify:

Resolve into factors or break the multiples into smaller units.

Find:

Discover, seek out or obtain by search of effort.

Measure:

State the size or weight through the act of measuring or quantifying.

Mathematics:

Is the study of science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement.

Effects:

Something brought about by a cause or agent.

Teachers’ experience:

They are teachers with classroom experience.

Academic performance:

How well a student meets standards set out by local government and the institution itself.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the effects of teachers experience in the academic performance of students in mathematics, Ifako-Ijaye local Government Area of Lagos state as case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.


5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was on the effects of teachers experience in the academic performance of students in mathematics, Ifako-Ijaye local Government Area of Lagos state as case study. The study is was specifically focused on examining the problem of the secondary school teachers in the teaching of Mathematics and finding out if the problem is as a result of the teachers sex.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 100 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are staff and students of selected secondary schools in Ifako-Ijaye local Government Area of Lagos state.


5.3 Conclusions

With respect to the analysis and the findings of this study, the following conclusions emerged;

The results shows that Sig (2-Tailed) value (.668 and .668) is more than .05. hence we conclude that there is no statistically significant difference between the teachers experience and students academic performance in secondary schools.


5.3 Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are put forward:

  1. Teachers should adequately motivated through good salary structures, in-service training, awards for excellence and punishment for truancy to enhance the teachers’ commitment to duty which will, among others,
    • Make them punctual to duty
    • Cause to prepare adequately for their lessons
    • Enable them effectively administer students’ assignments
  2. Teachers’ workload should be made appropriate (teacher-students ratio of 1:40; not more than 3 lessons of 1½ hours per week; etc.). This will enable them
    • Prepare adequately for their lessons
    • Enable them effectively administer students’ assignments
    • Improve teacher-students interaction
  3. Teachers’ administration of students’ assignments and teacher-students interaction should be improved upon through adequate motivation of teachers and making lighter teachers’ workload.
