Causes And Effects Of Early Marriage Among Female Teenagers (A Case Study Of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area In Enugu State) – Charles

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers using Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State; find out causes of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State; and find out the effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of students of some selected secondary schools in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. While the hypothesis was tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is a high the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study also revealed that early marriage affects female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as it hampers education opportunities, increased health risks, social isolation, economic dependence, and increased vulnerability to gender-based violence. Therefore, it is recommended that there is need for implementing comprehensive sex education programs in schools and communities within Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area so as to empower female teenagers with knowledge about reproductive health, contraceptive methods, and the consequences of early marriage. These programs should be age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and accessible to all adolescents, aiming to reduce the prevalence of early marriages by promoting informed decision-making regarding relationships and marriage. Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Child marriage is a custom all over the world, whereby children are given into marriage well before they attain puberty in most cases or even the age to get married as defined by several laws in Nigeria and other countries of the world (UNICEF, 2014). Many young girls are married without full consent and this is a key factor in realizing sixth sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is common to find a prevalence of such practices widespread in several parts of the world particularly in Africa, Asia, and South America. Child marriages are frequently associated with marriages that are conceived and arranged by parents, whereby, only one marriagepartner usually the female is a child (Mosaku, 2008).

Early marriage among female teenagers is a prevalent social phenomenon with far-reaching implications for individuals, families, and societies worldwide. In many cultures, including Nigeria, the practice of marrying off girls at a young age persists despite efforts to address its adverse effects. Understanding the causes and effects of early marriage in this context is essential for formulating effective policies and interventions to mitigate its negative consequences (Omoera & Oyadiran, 2018).

Several interconnected factors contribute to the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Nigeria. Socio-cultural norms and traditions play a pivotal role, as communities often uphold the practice of marrying off girls at a young age as a means of preserving cultural identity, ensuring family honor, and securing economic stability (Ogu & Iorpev, 2019). Additionally, poverty and economic hardship exacerbate the vulnerability of families, compelling them to marry off their daughters early to alleviate financial burdens and secure dowry payments (Anyanwu & Erhabor, 2017). Limited access to education, particularly for girls, further perpetuates the cycle of early marriage, as families prioritize marriage over schooling due to perceived socio-economic benefits and gender norms that prioritize male education (Amare & Nkunde, 2020).

The consequences of early marriage among female teenagers are multi-dimensional and profound, affecting various aspects of their lives. Health risks associated with early pregnancy and childbirth pose significant challenges, including higher rates of maternal mortality, obstetric complications, and adverse birth outcomes (Owoaje et al., 2016). Moreover, early marriage often disrupts girls’ education, limiting their opportunities for personal development, economic independence, and social mobility (Omololu & Afolabi, 2018). Psychosocial implications such as increased risk of gender-based violence, marital instability, and mental health disorders further compound the negative effects of early marriage on girls’ well-being and overall quality of life (Ahmed et al., 2021).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Early marriage among female teenagers remains a persistent and pressing issue in many communities worldwide, with significant implications for the health, well-being, and future prospects of young girls. In Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, early marriage continues to be a prevalent phenomenon, raising concerns about its underlying causes and the subsequent effects on individuals, families, and the wider society. Despite efforts to address this issue, the practice persists, posing serious challenges to the development and empowerment of female teenagers in the region.

One of the primary concerns regarding early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti is the lack of agency and autonomy experienced by these young girls. The decision to enter into marriage at a young age is often influenced by societal norms, cultural traditions, and family pressures, leaving teenage girls with limited control over their own lives and futures (Rashid & Michaud, 2015). This lack of autonomy can have far-reaching consequences, affecting the educational attainment, economic opportunities, and overall empowerment of young girls, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality (Al Riyami et al., 2013).

Furthermore, early marriage exposes female teenagers to various health risks and challenges, including early pregnancy and childbirth, maternal mortality, and obstetric complications (Raj et al., 2010). Adolescent girls who marry early are more likely to experience adverse reproductive health outcomes, as they may lack access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services and information (Santhya et al., 2010). Additionally, early marriage often disrupts girls’ educational trajectories, limiting their opportunities for personal and professional development and perpetuating gender disparities in educational attainment (Nour, 2009).

Moreover, the practice of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area contributes to broader social and economic challenges within the community. The perpetuation of early marriage reinforces traditional gender roles and norms, limiting the potential for gender equality and women’s empowerment (UNICEF, 2018). Furthermore, the economic consequences of early marriage, including reduced earning potential and financial dependence, can perpetuate cycles of poverty and inhibit community development efforts (Lloyd et al., 2012).

In light of these challenges, there is a critical need for a comprehensive understanding of the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area. By identifying the underlying factors driving this practice and examining its impact on individuals and communities, stakeholders can develop targeted interventions and strategies to address the root causes of early marriage and promote the rights and well-being of female teenagers in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers using Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The study has the following specific objectives.

Determine the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Find out causes of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State
Find out the effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

1.4 Research Question

The research is guided by the following questions.

What is the prevalence of early marriage among adolescents in Kaduna state?
What are the causes of early marriage among adolescents in Kaduna state?
What are the effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State ?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

Ho: Early marriage has no negative effect on female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State
Ha: Early marriage has a negative effect on female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study holds significant importance for several reasons.

Firstly, it addresses a critical social issue that has profound implications for the well-being and development of adolescent girls in the region. Early marriage can have far-reaching consequences on the lives of young girls, affecting their health, education, economic opportunities, and overall empowerment. By investigating the root causes of early marriage in the specific context of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, the study aims to shed light on the underlying factors driving this practice and provide insights into potential interventions to address it.

Secondly, the study’s focus on a specific geographic area allows for a nuanced understanding of the cultural, social, and economic dynamics that contribute to early marriage within the community. Igbo-Etiti, like many other localities in Nigeria, has its unique set of norms, traditions, and socio-economic conditions that influence marriage practices. By conducting a case study in this area, researchers can gather context-specific data and tailor interventions to the specific needs and realities of the community.

Furthermore, the study has implications for policy formulation and program development aimed at combating early marriage and promoting the rights and well-being of adolescent girls. Moreover, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on early marriage and its consequences, particularly within the Nigerian context. 1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Nigeria. Geographically, the study will be delimited some selected secondary schools in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

This research project, like all human endeavors, had some challenges that threatened to derail the study’s completion. One of the reasons is that the time allotted for this work was so limited that the researcher did not have enough time to complete the task thoroughly. During data collection, the researcher also had to put forth extra effort to understand the respondents’ interview schedules, several of whom fell into the incomprehensible age group. Also, there were financial and transportation constraints to deal with. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, interview).

1.9 Definition of Terms

Marriage:

Is the union between a man and a woman to become husband and wife.

Early Marriage:

Is the union of a boy and a girl and a man to become husband and wife below the age of 18 years.

1.10 Organization of the Study

The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, abnd selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers using Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.2 Summary of the Study

ii.In this study, our focus was to examine the causes and effects of early marriage among female teenagers using Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The study was specifically set to determine the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State; find out causes of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State; and find out the effects of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 150 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are students of some selected secondary schools in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion.

There is a high the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The causes of early marriage among female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State include; poverty, cultural and traditional practices, limited access to education, indiscipline, and gender inequality.
Early marriage affects female teenagers in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as it hampers education opportunities, increased health risks, social isolation, economic dependence, and increased vulnerability to gender-based violence.

5.4 Recommendation

Based on the findings the researcher recommends that;

There is need for implementing comprehensive sex education programs in schools and communities within Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area so as to empower female teenagers with knowledge about reproductive health, contraceptive methods, and the consequences of early marriage. These programs should be age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and accessible to all adolescents, aiming to reduce the prevalence of early marriages by promoting informed decision-making regarding relationships and marriage.
There is need for strengthening legal enforcement of the minimum age of marriage in Igbo-Etiti and ensuring strict penalties for individuals and families involved in underage marriages is crucial. Collaborating with local authorities, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies to monitor and enforce existing laws can serve as a deterrent against early marriages and protect the rights of female teenagers.
