Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the effects of computerization of library on students academic achievement and interest using Novena University as a case study. The study was carried out to determine the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries, find out whether the computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit, ascertain whether the computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics, and ascertain whether the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of Novena university students. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 160 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. While the hypotheses will be tested using and Pearson Correlation statistical tool, SPSS v23. The result of the findings reveals that the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries is high. The study also revealed that the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement. Therefore, it is recommended that the automated library facilities should be up and running at all times to meet the varied time students prefer to browse the Internet. This will reduce traffic congestion, monopoly of computer systems connected to the internet and students jostling for access. To mention but a few.

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Library is a fast growing organization, the ancient methods of maintaining it are no longer dynamic and efficient for expeditions, retrieval and dissemination of information and better service for the students; application of modern techniques has become absolutely indispensable(Admiraal et al., 2017). A digital library is an automated or electronic library where activities like accessing; with the help of a computer does resource sharing and storing. The word digital is concerned with the understanding of the design and development of electronic circuits. It includes system like word processing, micrographic, reprographic, video based information systems, message transmission such as fax, voice mail, e-mail and internet, (Encyclopedia, 2013).

Furthermore, digital libraries are a shift in electronic content; this enables libraries to apply a growing range of information technology to the management of collection of print information. The existence of digital libraries exist beyond experimental level to the existence of databases, library online catalogues, electronic journals in different organization including academic institutions, professional organizations, international organizations(Lee et al., 2019). The computerization of libraries also facilitates its automation which is further internet technology based. The computerization of libraries has changed the way students study and source for educational and learning materials. It has given students a tremendous sense of educational empowerment. And it is the beauty of the computerized library that every student user has now become a potential scholar. This innovativeness do not only aid students in sourcing for educational materials, but motivate and stimulate their interest towards reading and other learning activities. Interest could be defined as the “focusing of the sense organs on or giving attention to some person, activity, situation or object (Essien, Akpan & Obot, 2015). Interest could also be regarded as the feeling one has in the cause of wanting to know or learn more about somebody or something. It differs from the person’s attitude which refers to the manner of behaving towards somebody/something. Interest is an emotional and affective state that defines individuals responsiveness to a given event, situation, activity, object or person (Olodu, 2012).

A properly computerized library will help students with quick and prompt services. It allows students to have access to educational resources from the comfort of their location and at their own pace. This flexibility and efficiency of this service improves students commitment to studies and enables students to devote time to academics adequately. On the other hand, the availability and access to study materials is one of prominent features of computerized library, which significantly influences students academic achievement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The computerization of academic libraries is as important as the library resources. This is because computerized libraries provide wide access to more number of students who then access the information and read a the comfort of their home, hostel, or other destinations (Ivwighreghweta, 2012). This helps to minimize the stress of locating the school library, utilization the catalogue, and sourcing for the material needed among the crowds. Digital technology provides access to high-quality learning and consequently allows schools to develop their teaching and learning methods (Ertmer et al., 2012). Nonetheless, access to computers at home or the internet is not equal in every dwelling, and some students have the disadvantage of not having parental support or engagement to learn by themselves online. For these reasons, the pandemic can bestow tremendous advantages in digital education and academic achievement(Schmid and Petko, 2019). The computerization of libraries represents a significant improvement but for only some of the problems encounteredin manual libraries and, aside for the online catalog, benefits are direct to those who are providing the service rather than those who are using the service.

1.3 Objective of the Study

This study is designed to investigate the effects of computerization of library on students academic achievement and interest. The aim of the study is to;

Determine the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries.
Find out whether the computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit.
Ascertain whether the computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics.
Ascertain whether the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement.

1.4 Research Questions

This study will be guided by the following questions:

What is the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries?
Does the computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit?
Does the computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics?
Does the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H0: There is no significant relationship between computerization of libraries and students academic performance and interest.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between computerization of libraries and students academic performance and interest.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is very important in various ways. It is expected to identify the relationship between student’s perceptions of computerization of library on their academic performance. The results of this study are expected to unfold the problem which the students face on the use of computerized library and traditional library and how the problem affects their overall performance in school, especially in science related courses. Knowledge of Computerized library will help the Government, School Administrators, Government Council, Lecturers and Librarian to start working together towards alleviating some of the problem face by the students in using computerized library and integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in general for better educational outcome. This study will also benefit administrators.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study examines the effects of computerization of library on students academic achievement and interest, determining the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries, finding out whether the computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit, ascertaining whether the computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics, ascertaining whether the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement. Hence this study will be delimited to Novena University.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

Finance for the general research work will be a challenge during the course of study. Correspondents also might not be able to complete or willing to submit the questionnaires given to them.

However, it is believed that these constraints will be worked on by making the best use of the available materials and spending more than the necessary time in the research work. Therefore, it is strongly believed that despite these constraint, its effect on this research report will be minimal, thus, making the objective and significance of the study achievable.

1.9 Definitions of Terms

Computerization:

Equipping with a general purpose computer, embedded computer or computer system. Imputing data into computers, creating computer generated content.

Library:

A library is an organized collection of information and similar resources made accessible to a defined community for reference of borrowing it.

Students:

A person who is studying at a school, university or college.

Academic Performance:

Connected with education, especially studying in schools and universities, involving a lot of reading and studying which the student is rated.

1.10 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows. Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding. Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study.

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings to examine the effects of computerization of library on students academic achievement and interest using Novena University as a case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was to examine the effects of computerization of library on students academic achievement and interest using Novena University as a case study. The study specifically was aimed to determine the extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries, find out whether the computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit, ascertain whether the computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics, and ascertain whether the computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 141 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents are Novena university students.

5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion.

The extent at which computers are adopted in academic libraries is high.
The computerization of libraries motivates students’ study habit.
The computerization of libraries enhances students’ interest in their academics.
The computerization of libraries helps to improve students academic achievement.

5.4 Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are proffered.

The automated library facilities should be up and running at all times to meet the varied time students prefer to browse the Internet. This will reduce traffic congestion, monopoly of computer systems connected to the internet and students jostling for access.
A central access point to or from the automated library should be dedicated for student use. This point should be well equipped to meet the student population. The management of the access point can be contracted out to a private entrepreneur or managed by a competent committee.
Appropriate billing systems should be put in place if necessary to fund the management of the service. Lecturers should refer students to websites for additional information. The additional information will compliment the classroom teaching and widen the student‟s concept of the topic under discussion. Students may use the internet facility mainly for communication purposes if lecturers do not refer them to search for information on subject topics and present a written report. To provide access to the automated library services or facilities.
Higher institutions should ensure that the speed of the connection (bandwidth) is sufficient to cater for all users‟ (staff and students) needs. Good response time when users request for information on the internet will make them constant users of the internet facilities.
