Abstract

It is obvious that an organization whose works attitude to work in negative or constant to the company’s goals and objective is bound to have less competitive advantages over other competitors. Employees are the bedrock of every organization so even when organizations inject new technology into its system in a bid to enhance productivity, positive result may not be achieved. Recently, the Nigerian attitude to work deteriorated and thus the level of productivity in all spheres of the economy has suffered greatly.

Gossiping and loitering among the officers while neglecting duties is now the order of the day amongst workers, especially in government establishment. Some even go as far as absenting themselves from work for several days and still collect their pay at the end of the month. This has amounted to “reputing where one did not sow”. Therefore, this study will try to uncover the reason for poor work ethics and productivity in the Nigerian workers.

Its aim is to know whether workers negative attitudes to work is as a result of remuneration, poor motivation, staff recruitment and placement, leadership style of the organization and many other policies of the organization or whether it is as a result of the workers laziness and abhorrence for work.

Finally, effort will be made to proffer solution to this poor work ethics thereby helping to ameliorate the problems. The researcher chose the power holding company of Nigeria (PHCN, Owerri Branch) as a case study. This is so because of the largess of the public sector of the economy. An attempt to study the entire sector will be too cumbersome.

Chapter Five

5.0 Summary, Conclusion And Recommendation

5.1 Introduction

This chapter wills discuses the implication of the finding based on the data collected through the administration of the questionnaires and personal note review. It will also reveal the reasons why workers performance in an organization is low.

5.2 Summary Of Findings

Obviously, the attempt to uncover the reasons for poor work ethics and productivity in the Nigerian public services and efficiency in public sector organization, as cases study of PHCN has been very imperative.

As a matter of fact, the researcher quickly introduces in chapter on the topic which encompasses the background of study, significance of the study, statement of problems, scope, and limitations of the study and definition of terms. The review of related literature was examined in chapter two. At this point, the review of the eminent authors in the field of management was ushered in pertaining to the study.

Sequel to that. The chapter four deals with the presentation and analysis of data. It exposed the reactions and profiles of the employees in PHCN as well as the research findings. While the chapter five finally talks about the summary and conclusion which is based on the overall aspect of the study. Following this, it enables promotion and other measures to be based on merit. Both simple and complicated jobs will settle into repetitive pattern of work activity.

The man with poor habit spends as much energy as the hard worker. But spends a lot of time on tribal matters. Watching out for this shuffling and duplication of work will help to improve the work pattern of the employee with poor work habit.

Try the job yourself: in some cases, it is a sound idea to try doing the job yourself to find out if the employees actually has good work habit, but is performing at what seems to be low output because of things in jobs which are not apparent to the naked eye. It is not always properly judge how hard or easy a task is from more observation.
Set a good Example: the work habit of a boss to a great extent affects the organization either negatively or positively. The manager should try as much as he can to be punctual and regular to work as well as performing his work diligently unless he demonstrates these habits, should not expect others to adhere to his instruction / orders.

5.3 Conclusion

Having considered the finding from the respondents it is new found that the inability of the employee to perform well s as a result of the fact that the employees are not motives very well. This has amounted to the weakness of the administrative organization to progress. It is now certain that if all the necessary faculties and factors that surround the objectives of an organization like PHCN are put into cognizance. The organization will go a long way progressively and achieving its aims simultaneously. Solidarity is the strength of employee as well as the organization

5.4 Recommendations

Poor work ethics of most Nigerian workers are common in the Federal, State, and local government and it is caused by poor performance of the workers.

In some case it is a sound idea to try doing the job yourself to find out if the employee actually has good habit, but is performing at what seems to be low output because of things in the job which are not apparent to the naked eye. It is not always properly judging how hard or easy a job or task is from more observations.

Finally, there should be the need for regular free and fair performance exercise in our work place. In doing this, both the management and the workers will painstaking choose the most relevant techniques for the different job situations.
